Last weekend Waynesville 8th grader Austin Parish traveled to Tulsa Oklahoma to compete in the Cliff Keen Tulsa Nationals. This tournament features over 2,000 wrestlers from approximately 40 states ages 4-16 competing for a national title. Austin entered the tournament in the 135 pound weight class. The 32 man bracket consisted of wrestlers from 13 states. Austin finished an outstanding weekend of wrestling taking 6th place. Austin defeated the wrestler who went on to place 4th and saw a close match that ended in a narrow defeat by a score of 0-2 to the eventual champion.
Austin looks ahead toward the rest of his season and will be competing in the West Virginia National Duals as well as the Ohio Jr. High State Tournament.
On Wednesday this week, eighteen 7th and 8th graders from the Middle School Book Club went to read to Mrs. Becker’s 2nd graders and “a good time was had by all”! In fact, in some cases, the 2nd graders wanted to show off their reading talents and THEY read to the middle-schoolers! Plans are already in the works for a return visit!

Local veterans and their families were honored by students and staff from both schools on Veteran’s Day. With the help of Student Council members, highlights of the tribute included a breakfast reception, choral selections by combined WHS and WMS choirs and a staff quartet, and a meaningful and moving flag-passing ceremony. In this ceremony, SSgt Jared Riske of the United States Marine Corps narrated a historical description of all of our U.S. wars and conflicts, while representatives from each conflict passed the U.S. flag. At the close of the ceremony, the flag was presented to Mr. Ralph Peters, a WWII pilot and POW, who was the oldest veteran in attendance. Many thanks to all of our veterans for their service to our great country!!!
