I want to publically congratulate each and every one of our athletes for their contributions and dedication resulting in another SWBL All Sports Championship! On behalf of the school community, we are proud of your accomplishments. I also want to remind you that it takes a well-rounded sports program to win the All Sports Championship year in and year out.
Please consider the benefits of multiple-sport participation over specializing in just a single sport. Matthew Shomper, athletic director at Tippecanoe High School in Tipp City, Ohio recently published the following considerations:
Improved health and wellness; there are many health benefits to varied physical activity. Reduced risk of over-use injuries, performance anxiety, and mental burnout.
- Multiple-sport students also show improved athletic performance. Using different muscles and skills lends to better athleticism, better leadership and team work skills. Evidence supports that multiple-sport students pick up on new skills easier.
- Being involved in more sports leads to character development because students may not excel in all of their sports, so they learn humility and teamwork. Exposure to different coaching styles and personalities is also a positive.
- Having fun, we don’t always have to be the best. Multiple-sport participation promotes positive values, reduces mental stress and develops a sense of pride in community.
Enjoy the fast approaching summer break. For our returning athletes pay attention to off-season workouts and camp opportunities. Rejuvenate yourself for an exciting 2011/12 school year. For our graduates, best of luck with your future endeavors.
