Principal's Message

Elementary Principal

Greetings:

With all of the snow days in February, it seemed like we were never going to make it to March.  IOWA/CogAT Testing are behind us with a few make-ups to complete in March.

Congratulations to Kate Von Handorf for placing 8th out of 72 spellers in the Cincinnati Regional Spelling Bee. By the 4th round she was the only elementary student left in the competition. Way to go, Kate!

Here are the upcoming highlights for the month of March:

Monday, March 8 – Our Olweus Anti-Bullying building team will be presenting the results of this year’s implementation at the Wayne Local School Board meeting at 7:30 pm. Parents and community members are welcome to hear this presentation in the Spartan Room.

March 15 & 16 – Kindergarten Registration 9:00-11:00 or 5:30-6:30 pm

March 18 – Science Fair (required in 5th Grade) Open to the community at 6:30 pm in the Elementary Gym

March 22 – 2nd Grade Musical “ARF” Dress Rehearsal @ 2:45 and performance at 7:00 pm in the Elementary Gym. Parents, grandparents, and community members are welcome to attend either performance.

March 25 – 5th Grade DARE Graduation at 2:00 pm in the Elementary Gym; reception following in the school cafeteria

March 29-April 2   SPRING BREAK – No School

Because we have exceeded our 5 calamity days, school will be in session on Monday, April 5.

We will continue to focus upon our 4 overarching building principles: Be a Spartan Problem Solver. Be Ready. Be Responsible. Be Respectful. Be Safe. We have been rolling out the OLWEUS Bullying Prevention Program, and we are seeing fewer incidences of bullying, name-calling, and/or exclusion.
As part of our Parent Handbook, I am including the following and want to encourage each one of you to begin sharing these principles with your children throughout the school year.
SCHOOL BEGINS AT HOME –Miss Hartman’s TOP TEN
We want every child to experience success at school, and you can help your child do so by getting your child’s day off to a good start. You can make sure your child starts each day on a positive note by cooperating with and supporting our efforts in the following ways:
1. Good nutrition maximizes your child’s day at school. Please provide your child with a nourishing breakfast and lunch.
2. Send your child to school ON TIME, not late or too early
3. Teach your child to respect and obey all school adults. All teachers and other adults (including secretaries, custodians, aides, and cooks) have authority and are responsible for the safety of children and general building order.
4. Talk with your child about treating other children in the same manner as they wish to be treated (avoid name calling, arguing, fighting, etc).
5. Tell you child to go directly to and from school using the same route/routine every day.
6. Send your child to school properly washed and dressed, using the dress code and weather conditions as guides.
7. Discuss with your child all the information in this handbook so that your child clearly understands what is expected from them at school.
8. Parent interest in the completion of daily homework is essential for student academic growth and success.
9. Become actively involved in school by participating in our PTO or volunteering in the classroom.
10. Above all else, constantly affirm your child-praise them for good efforts and behavior at school, and we will do the same!
