GOOD NEWS FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT’S OFFICE

HAVE A GREAT SPRING BREAK!

PROJECT EXCELLENCE TEACHERS CHOSEN

On Wednesday, April 13, Supt. Pat Dubbs presented Elementary Art teacher, Laura Burkland, and High School Math teacher, Tess Rivero, with flowers and a balloon to recognize them as the 2011 “Project Excellence” award winners at Wayne Local Schools.

Laura Burkland is completing her 7th year teaching Art to all students in Grades 1-5 (540 students) at Waynesville Elementary. She has literally built the art program from the ground up to include many standards based concepts, appreciation, and projects. As students learn and master new techniques at a younger age, Laura is able to layer and present more challenging skills, elements and principles of design while they advance through each grade level. Laura regularly collaborates with the other art teachers in the district to plan for the annual art show and to identify gifted artists within our district. She utilizes resources outside the district as well as the Dayton Art Institute. When asked by local businesses, she provides artwork to display in their lobbies. In her classroom interactions are warm, caring, and encouraging. Laura reminds her students that there is no such thing as ‘failing’ when experimenting with new art styles. She encourages her students to ask questions, and she has high expectations for student work and participation. Throughout the school year Laura completes a series of after school Art Club sessions for 2nd -5th grades. Those 30 spots fill up quickly, and there is usually a waiting list. She continues to grow professionally by taking art and education classes and completing the “Nurtured Heart Approach” with several other staff in our building. She has her Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership. Laura is one of the “best” in Warren County and deserves the honor of Excellent Educator 2011.

Tess Rivero is the 2011 Project Excellence Innovative Teacher award winner. Tess is a very strong classroom teacher who has unique abilities to mobilize staff, students, parents, and the community to work together to achieve our school’s mission. Besides classroom teaching, she has actively participated in professional organizations and volunteers many hours to mathematics education. Tess holds herself to high expectations and encourages all students to work hard by sharing her passion for math. Tess has become a leader in making greater use of technology; engaging students in their studies by developing new ideas and interventions in the area of ACT and OGT preparation. Tess has also led the redesign of our math program of studies and has developed a “jump start” program for students who want to advance despite falling behind in the course sequence. Tess is highly regarded by her peers as a dedicated, thoughtful, and cutting edge professional. Many of our teachers draw upon her knowledge, lesson designs and strategies; especially in the area of SMART board technology in the classroom. In 2009 Mrs. Rivero was honored as a National Board Certified Teacher. She was recently featured by the Southern Regional Educational Board's High Schools That Work Initiative and has presented to colleagues in Cincinnati, Toledo and Louisville on how to use a SMART Board and the internet to increase student learning in the classroom. Tess is one of the “best” in Warren County and deserves the honor of Innovative Teacher 2011.

MRS. BECKETT'S FIRST GRADE CLASS NEWS

The students in Mrs. Beckett's first grade class have had a great year!  Everyone is doing a wonderful job reading and working on the Daily 5 activities.  They have learned so many strategies from the Café Menu to help them with their reading.

The children are writing wonderful stories during Writer's Workshop.  They continue to work on conventions and content while exploring the different types of writing.

The first graders are currently working on money in math class.  They will be learning time, measurement and double digit addition and subtraction before the end of the year.

As the end of the school year approached they will be learning about different kinds of animals to prepare for the zoo trip.  Some of the most recent topics they have covered are: amphibians, farms and food chains.  We will also spend time discussing plants and ecology as Earth Day approaches.

Everyone has worked hard and made this an awesome year.  The class would like to thank their parents for their continued support.

Have a great Spring Break!

WAYNESVILLE HIGH SCHOOL BAND TO PERFORM AT STATE LEVEL

On Friday, April 29, 2011, at 9:35pm, the Waynesville High School Concert Band will be taking the stage at Lakota East Freshman School in hopes of earning a Superior rating (I) at the OMEA State Large Group Adjudicated Event.  The concert band earned a Superior rating at the OMEA District 13 Large Group Adjudicated Event back in March, which gave them the opportunity to perform at the state level.  This is a very exciting prospect for the ensemble!
The Waynesville High School Concert Band has been busy polishing three pieces since mid-March—Columbian March arranged by Gene Milford, Phoenix Overture by Benjamin Yeo, and Simple Gifts: Four Shaker Songs by Frank Ticheli.  The judges at the state level expect more from the groups, so our musicians have had to learn to be attentive to the smallest details.  We hope to see a large crowd at Lakota East Freshman School on the 29th for their performance at contest!

ZOMBIE INVASION!  MORE ABOUT THE SHOW:

ZOMBIE PROM is an “alarming anecdote of atomic adolescent angst.”  It was a hit Off-Broadway in 1996 and in London in 2009 and is gaining steady popularity in schools and professional theatres for its high-energy, tongue-in-cheek stab at the nuclear 1950’s.

It’s just another day at Enrico Fermi High when an innocent teen, Toffee, falls in love with the school’s newest rebel, Jonny Warner.  When her parents and principal pressure her to break up with him, Toffee must deal with the guilt of watching Jonny meet his doom at the nearby nuclear power plant.  But their “Forbidden Love” sparks back to life when Jonny returns as a nuclear zombie!  Principal Strict refuses to let a zombie in her school, local muckraker Eddie Flagrante stirs up trouble, and Toffee must decide what to do when her buried ex-boyfriend asks her to prom!  Don’t miss this goofy, grimy, girl-loves-ghoul tale!

A special note:  W.H.S. Drama gives ZOMBIE PROM a “PG” rating and does not recommend it for young or sensitive audiences.  Visit the W.H.S. Drama website for links to other theatres in our area!

ATTENTION JUNIOR AND SENIOR PARENTS
CHAPERONES, HELP, and DONATIONS STILL NEEDED FOR AFTER PROM

CHAPERONES
The Waynesville High School Prom is scheduled for Saturday, April 30, 2011 with after prom activities scheduled to start at 12:30 AM on May 1 in the high school and middle school areas. In order for this to be a successful event we are in need of about 40 – 50 adult chaperones to assist us in manning activity stations, door guards, coat check, registration, gift tables, cash cube, food services, and several other miscellaneous stations. We ask that chaperones report to the school at 12:00 for orientation and they can elect to stay the whole time, or work one shift. We normally schedule shifts for an hour and a half, some may be shorter, others longer. After prom will conclude by 4:00 AM but we ask any and all chaperones who can to stay until the cleanup activities are completed. If there is enough help, this is normally completed in less than an hour. If you are interested in being a chaperone, please contact Mitch Peters by phone at: Home Phone: 897-5310 or Cell Phone: 937-238-2235. You can also email Mitch at the4tmp@aol.com. When replying please be ready to provide your name(s), times you are available, and your t-shirt size. Each chaperone will receive a free t-shirt for working.

AFTER PROM COMMITTEE HELP AND DONATIONS
The after prom committee is still in need of help for its various committees to make after prom a success. Committees consist of solicitation for donations, gifts, games, food, and just overall help. We are starting to hold more frequent meetings and can really use your help. Please contact Lisa Cummins with any help you may be willing to give and for meeting dates and times. Lisa can be reached at 513-502-4616.

Donations are also still being accepted for after prom. We are accepting cash, gift cards, prizes, most anything an individual or business may be willing to donate that a high school age youth may enjoy. It is the goal of the after prom committee that each junior and senior Waynesville student that attends after prom go home with a gift valued between 10 and 25 dollars. At the end of the evening, each of the students is eligible for some very nice grand prizes. If you, or anyone you know, individual or business, is willing to make a donation to this great cause, please contact Lisa Cummins at 513-502-4616 or Mitch Peters at 513-897-5310. All donations are greatly appreciated.

Congratulations Morgan!

Baseball on roll!
The Spartan baseball team won two SWBL games this week to improve to 8-2 overall and 4-0 in league play.  Wednesday night they defeated Carlisle by the score of 10-7.  Shaun Lewis started on the mound and went 6 2/3 innings before Kevin Carter came in and got the last out.  Offensive leaders for the Spartans were Ty Black (3-5, 2B), Carter (2-4, 2 RBI's), Wyatt Myers (2-3, 3 Runs) and Tyler Schrock (2-2, 2B, 2 RBI's).  Then on Thursday the Spartans defeated Preble Shawnee 28-0.  Schrock earned his third win of the season on the mound in the complete game effort.  Offensive leaders on this day were Carter who hit two home runs including a grand slam while knocking in 9 runs on the day.  Max Ramsey hit his first home run of the season while finishing with 5 RBI's.  Others productive days at the plate were Black (3-5, 2B, 3 Runs), Victor Boggs (2B), Carter (4-5, 2 HR, 9 RBI's), Connor Combs (2-4, 3 Runs, 2 RBI's), Caleb Keeton (2B), Nate McGillivray (4 Runs), Myers (2-3, 2B, 3 RBI's), Ramsey (2-3, HR, 5 RBI's), Schrock (3 Runs, 2 RBI's) and Joey Tweel (4 Runs).  Waynesville continues SWBL play with upcoming games against Preble Shawnee, Dixie and Northridge.

The junior varsity earned their second win of the season with a 12-2 win against Preble Shawnee.  Good play continues from sophomores Noah McGillivray, Nolan Fanning and Shelby Dermer.

The junior high baseball team lost a close battle with Oakwood Thursday night by the score of 3-2.  This puts them at 3-3 on the season.  Good pitching this season from  Caleb Smith, Dylan Goldsberry and Christian Zidaroff.  The outfield play from Justin Vostad has been spectacular and the following 7th graders have really stepped it up recently, Logan Fruhwirth, Austin Beachler and Isa Bauer.

Softball splits week!
The Lady Spartans had an up and down week as they have won in an impressive way and lost in a disappointing way. After two games were called in the beginning of the week due to weather, Carlisle came to town Wednesday. The Ladies played a near error free game as they beat the Indians 6-4. They were not as fortunate Thursday at Preble Shawnee as they lost 7-1.
The Spartan Softball team improved their record to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in the SWBL.

The Lady Spartans Middle School Fastpitch Softball Team is off to a good start with a 7-0 record. This is a group to watch for the future. With a compliment of 4 pitchers( 1 on the DL ) the Lady Spartans pitching staff has struck out 84 out of 134 batters, and allowed only 12 hits.
Defensively they are a team that moves on every pitch, committing only 8 errors in 7 games.
With 9 players batting over .500 , and 2 out of the park home run, offensively they are a lineup that you can't pitch around, little ball or long ball they can play it all. With a combined team average of 3.1 seconds to first base and 140 stolen bases in 7 games, this team is fun to watch.
They were away Friday at Dayton Christian, then a week of practice during spring break, and will resume their schedule with a home game against Brookville on April 25th.
High School track at home !

Middle School Track!
The Middle School Team competed at tri-meet with Edgewood and Franklin this past week and came away with many top three finishers in their respective events. Donald Moore was a three-time first place finisher in Shot put, the 400 meter dash and as a member of the 1600 meter (mile) relay team.  Jaime Reeves also had an outstanding day winning both the 100 meter and 400 meter dash, as well as, a second place finisher in the 800-meter relay.  Paige Naigele and Chloe VanHoose ran their best races in the 800m (1/2 mile) and placed first and third, respectively. Michaela Harman also had a great outing as she placed first in the 200m dash, second in the 100m dash and a second place finisher as a member of the 800-meter relay team.
Also, Jacob Spitznogle threw his personal best in the discus and came away with a first place finish for the Spartans.  Others placing in events were:  Logan Dyer, two, second place finishes in the 100 & 200 dash, Matt Creditt, Brandon Young, William Evans, Tyler Blair and Trevor Johnson all came away winners as member of either the 800m relay or as a member of the mile relay.  The whole team competed intensely and many came away with personal bests and continue to strive to reach their goals.  This team really gets after it in practice, works hard and has fun, all rolled into ONE!

WELLNESS

GRILLING SAFETY

With spring approaching, outdoor grilling is a popular activity. Grilling is enjoyable, but can be dangerous if a few safety tips aren't followed.

Safety tips:
• Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.
• The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
• Keep children and pets away from the grill area.
• Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
• Never leave your grill unattended.
• Always allow the grill to cool down before placing a grill cover over it.

Charcoal grills:
• There are several ways to get the charcoal ready to use. Charcoal chimney starters allow you to start the charcoal using newspaper as a fuel.
• If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire.
• Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources.
• There are also electric charcoal starters, which do not use fire. Be sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use.
• When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container.

Propane grills:
Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year. Apply a light soap and water solution to the hose. A propane leak will release bubbles. If your grill has a gas leak, by smell or the soapy bubble test, and there is no flame, turn off the gas tank and grill. If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again. If the leak does not stop, call the fire department. If you smell gas while cooking, immediately get away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not move the grill.

According to the National Fire Protection Agency, fire departments respond to an average of 7,900 home fires involving grills, hibachis or barbecues each year, including 5,000 outside fires and 2,900 structure fires. June and July are the peak months for grill fires. Thirty-three percent (33%) of home grill structure fires start on an exterior balcony or unenclosed porch.

EMERGING ORGANIZATION AWARD HONORS NEW MUSEUM’S GROWTH AND ACTIVITIES
The Warren County Foundation awarded its Emerging Organization Award to the Museum at the Friends Home during its Community Service Awards Banquet on April 14. The award recognizes the Museum’s outstanding progress in preserving and promoting local area history since its opening in 2000. 2011 will continue the Museum’s track record of adding new exhibits and programs. A Civil War display commemorates the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War and features poignant letters written by area soldiers to their families. Four lucky couples won a historic dinner with General and Mrs. Grant to be served in the Museum’s elegant dining room and featuring period costumes and conversation. Initial settlement of the area starting in 1797 will be highlighted by authentic cabins, barns and covered wagons painstakingly crafted by local residents. From June through September, Museum volunteers will recount stories of extraordinary village residents, both famous and infamous, along Main Street on Second Saturday Faire events which promote the village’s popular shops and restaurants. Near season’s end, a Christmas Parade of Homes will feature several beautifully decorated and historic homes and buildings. These new activities complement the Museum’s yearly Ladies Tea Party, this year “Remembering Civil War Ladies,” and the highly popular “Ghostly History Walking Tours.” Additional information is available from the Museum's website at www.friendshomemuseum.org .
