CAMP INVENTION – A PROGRAM OF INVENT NOW

In partnership with Invent Now, Wayne Local School District is pleased to offer the nationally-acclaimed Camp Invention program to children entering grades one through six this summer.  This exciting, weeklong adventure in creativity immerses children in imaginative play that reinforces and supplements school-year learning in the subjects of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), as well as history and the arts.  Children will work together to seek innovative solutions to real-world problems and sharpen critical 21st century learning skills such as teamwork and creative problem solving as they rotate through five modules each day that disguise learning as fun.

This exciting week of five fun-filled modules begins on June 20, 2011 when Denise Blevins will direct the Camp Invention SPARK program at Waynesville High School.  In the WILD:  Wondrous Innovations and Living Designs™ module, children will venture on a WILD animal excursion to investigate the most innovative survival traits on the planet.  Children will build a clubhouse, decipher puzzling codes, and work together to solve a mystery in The Curious Cypher Club module.  In the Bounce!  An Atomic Journey™ module, children will bounce their way through atoms, molecules, mixtures, and compounds to discover the science behind bouncy balls.  Children will use nontraditional equipment (such as water balloons) to add their own twists to classic games in the Game On:  Power Play™ module.  Finally, a participant favorite, children will be introduced to tool safety as they disassemble a discarded household appliance and use its pieces and parts to invent a working, multi-step machine in the I Can Invent:  Edison’s Workshop™ module.  Local educators will facilitate program modules, and enthusiastic high school and middle school students will serve as program counselors and Jr. counselors – ensuring that one staff member is in place for every eight children.

FREE childcare will be provided from 6am-camp start (9am) and from camp end (3:30pm)-6pm. Waynesville High School Honor Society will be providing this service as a service to the community. Please contact Denise Blevins to reserve your childcare spot for camp!

Register on or before March 30, 2011 for only $50 down and receive $25 OFF.  Every registration includes a free Camp Invention T-shirt.  Availability is limited, so visit www.campinvention.org or call 800.968.4332 to reserve your child’s spot today!

Happy Camping!

ATTENTION HIGH SCHOOL JR PARENTS
It’s time to start thinking about the 2011 After-Prom, which will immediately follow Prom on April 30, 2011.  It’s up to us parents to ensure that our kids have a fun, safe & memorable night. We will provide inflatables, a variety of games, lots of food & drinks, & prizes will be given out all night long. Last year we had a great turnout with almost 180 kids in attendance. In order to make this another successful After-Prom, we need as many volunteers as possible.  I also need a Jr. parent to take over my position as President of the committee. I will guide you through everything as well as the other returning Sr. parents.
The next meeting is attentively scheduled for Tuesday, February 22 at the High School Library 7p.m.   Please call, text or email me your name, child’s name & contact # if you are willing to be a part of this special night.

WCESC PARENT SURVEY
The Warren County Educational Service Center is participating in a federal grant from the Department of Education called The Integration of Schools and Mental Health Services. The goals of this grant include assessing mental health service needs for students in Warren County, and finding ways to address those needs. The grant team really wants to hear from Waynesville parents to see what kind of experiences you have had with mental health services for your children. Please take a few minutes to complete a brief parent survey that can be accessed by clicking on this link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/YQ6RTJD  . The results of this survey will help identify gaps in mental health services for students, and to identify mental health topics parents are interested in. Thank you for your time!
