NEWS FROM WHS ROOM 11
English classes are beginning new “reads:” 9th graders are starting TEARS OF A TIGER, a young adult novel written by award-winning Sharon Draper, a former Cincinnati school teacher. The story of how a young man becomes consumed by a tragic experience with his friends will offer us insight into how we need to communicate with and share our despair with parents, teachers, and friends in time of deep stress. Students will then research mental health agencies and how they can help as well.
10th graders are reading OF MICE AND MEN by John Steinbeck, learning more about the personal side of the Great Depression, while studying imagery and character development. Pre-reading allowed for research into various aspects of life and work opportunities during the 1930’s as itinerant workers. Through frequent writing we continue to prepare for the OGT, which will be coming up in mid-March.

OLIVE GARDEN PENNIES FOR PASTA DRIVE FOR LEUKEMIA/LYMPHOMA DRIVE IN FEBRUARY
Once again WHS Student Council will be sponsoring this drive to raise awareness and donations for Leukemia/Lymphoma. 4th period classes will compete to win the Olive Garden lunch. WHS Cheerleaders will solicit donations at a few games with their DANCE FOR A CHANCE hip-hop routine. As we dedicate ourselves to this cause, we want to remind everyone to keep positive thoughts for 2010 graduate Stephen “Goose” Gossard as he undergoes treatment for lymphoma in Columbus.

WRITING CENTER TUTORS ARE TOPS!!
Congratulations to the Writing Center Tutors -- Andrea Ames, Kaitlyn Boggs, Jamie Crane, Maggie Dowe, Leighanne Dyer, Molly Gossard, Faith Hawk, Ciera Philpott, Andrew Valiquette, and Lindsey Young -- who recently concluded the second nine weeks with a whopping 266 conferences!
These ten dedicated writers have helped high school students improve their writing skills by asking questions, offering suggestions, and discussing key areas for revision. The tutors set up shop inside the WHS Media Center and they are available for conferencing all periods of the school day. Students may drop in during a study hall, sign up for a spot during Extra Time/Extra Help, OR plan a time before or after school (just give us a 24 hour advance notice if requesting these special times).
I am SO PROUD of these tutors; they have been especially eager to help our high school students with all types of writing -- from research papers to scholarship essays!

SPRING MUSICAL CAST AND CREW ANNOUNCED!
After a few days of cabin fever, W.H.S. Drama is thrilled to announce the cast and crew of the 2011 Spring Musical, ZOMBIE PROM! Check out the W.H.S. Drama website to see the cast/crew list, and stay tuned to GNF for more information about how you can support the show!
SEWING BEE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
To avoid the extreme expense of renting costumes this year, W.H.S. Drama is looking for volunteers to help at our SEWING BEE on Saturday, February 19, from 9:00AM-5:00PM. We’ll convert Room 12 into a costume shop to create the girls’ costumes for the show, which mostly involve poodle skirts and 1950’s-style prom dresses.
Whether Martha Stewart has you on speed dial or your best work is with duct tape, we have a job for YOU! To help us prepare, go to the W.H.S. Drama website to fill out and send back the “Sewing Bee RSVP.” This form will help us know when you’re coming, what your skill level is, and if you have any equipment of your own (machines, scissors, etc.) you can bring to use. We’ll have fabric, patterns, tools and supplies, electricity, and lunch ready for the day!
If you have questions or would like more information, please take a look at the Sewing Bee RSVP or contact director Jason Hamen at jhamen@wayne-local.com or 513-897-2776x4012.
Please pass this message on to other sewing buddies who might be able to help! This is an unusual event in the W.H.S. Drama calendar, but we’re looking forward to a fun day and appreciate your help!

WHAT IS NEW IN MIDDLE SCHOOL ART?
Sixth graders are building-bears with lines, more affordable than the traditional build-a-bear. This project allows students the flexibility to design their bear yet learn to draw without outlines. One of the best parts of this project is their bears are unique!
Middle School Mixed Media classes are making ceramic goblets. We will finish these with jewels and other decorations. Did you know a part of making 3D objects applies real-world physics principles? Imagine the faces of those who have designs that are good but when it comes to standing freely, they won’t work. Clay is forgiving but only to a point.
Seventh grade traveled to the Cincinnati Art Museum to see “Heavy Metals”, a display of Medieval armor. We also toured other highlights of the museum. This trip would not have been possible without the cooperation of our fabulous parent chaperones. Taking 114 students downtown Cincinnati is quite a logistical feat.
Spring Art Club will be forming in February. This is a great opportunity for students who cannot fit art into their schedules to come to the art room and make their own creations. Sixth graders meet on Tuesdays and seventh and eighth graders meet on Wednesday and Thursday. The cost is $5.00 which goes entirely to buying supplies. If a student does not like to work with clay, they may choose other media. The possibilities are unlimited.
Watch for the district-wide Art Show this spring. Waynesville students will have an opportunity to showcase their school year’s hard work!

RECYCLE A CELL PHONE - SAVE A GORILLA!
Help Waynesville Elementary School collect unwanted cell phones in cooperation with the Cincinnati Zoo’s Cell Phone Recycling Program. Recycling cell phones reduces mining for coltan, a mineral used in cell phones, in gorilla habitat and raises money for the Zoo’s Conservation Fund.
Mrs. Johnson’s second grade class has partnered with the Cincinnati Zoo Service Learning Project - Save the Gorillas! A cell phone collection box will be located in Mrs. Johnson’s Classroom.
Waynesville Elementary is listed on the partner’s page of the zoo’s website. Here is the link in case you would like to check it out, http://www.cincinnatizoo.org/savingspecies/partners_schools.html

ATTENTION HIGH SCHOOL JR PARENTS
It’s time to start thinking about the 2011 After-Prom, which will immediately follow Prom on April 30, 2011. It’s up to us parents to ensure that our kids have a fun, safe & memorable night.
We will provide inflatables, a variety of games, lots of food & drinks, & prizes will be given out all night long. Last year we had a great turnout with almost 180 kids in attendance. In order to make this another successful After-Prom, we need as many volunteers as possible.
I also need a Jr parent to take over my position as President of the committee. I will guide you through everything as well as the other returning Sr. parents.
The next meeting is attentively scheduled for Wednesday, February 9 at the Waynesville Government Building.
Please call, text or email me your name, child’s name & contact # if you are willing to be a part of this special night.

WCESC PARENT SURVEY
The Warren County Educational Service Center is participating in a federal grant from the Department of Education called The Integration of Schools and Mental Health Services. The goals of this grant include assessing mental health service needs for students in Warren County, and finding ways to address those needs. The grant team really wants to hear from Waynesville parents to see what kind of experiences you have had with mental health services for your children. Please take a few minutes to complete a brief parent survey that can be accessed by clicking on this link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/YQ6RTJD . The results of this survey will help identify gaps in mental health services for students, and to identify mental health topics parents are interested in. Thank you for your time!
2010-2011 WAYNESVILLE HIGH SCHOOL YEARBOOKS PRE-ORDER INFORMATION
Pre-orders are now available for the 2010-2011 high school yearbooks. Placing a pre-order today will guarantee a yearbook at a lower price and will make receiving one much easier. We strongly suggest students and parents pre-order yearbooks.
Pre-Order and pay for Yearbooks online with EZPAY. After logging into the EZpay system from the schools website, choose "School Activities" and then "Publications". Select the yearbook pre-order for the grade your student is in. For example, senior students must select the senior yearbook pre-order.
Yearbook pre-orders may also be made with a check or cash dropped of to the high school library. Make checks payable to "Waynesville High School".
Price: $55
Deadline for Pre-Order: April 15
Contact Mr. Lewis (dlewis@wayne-local.com) for more information or with questions.
TRANSPORTATION SAFETY TIP
Some parents advise their child to run across the roadway so that they get across faster. Please never advise your child to run. The safest way to cross the roadway is for your child to always watch the driver for the safe signal to cross. When the signal is given, your child should walk in an orderly fashion across the roadway.
BCI AND FBI BACKGROUND CHECKS
All volunteers and coaches must have BCI and FBI background results on file at Wayne Local Schools. The FBI background check must be redone every 5 years. As long as you continuously live in Ohio the BCI background check will not have to be redone after the initial submission. The Superintendent’s Office has the capability to process these checks. Boys Streak at 6 in a row!

Both teams are working hard and playing well together as a team. Please try to come out and support both teams and see how hard they play.
The Varsity boys team continues to keep their undefeated record for the new year alive with 2 big league wins over Northridge last Saturday and Dixie on Tuesday. The Varsity record is 8-3, winning 6 in a row, and are 1 game out of 1st place in the league. Last Saturday the Spartans beat Northridge 78-49. With Northridge starting the game in a zone defense the Spartans took advantage of it and drained 8 3 point shots in the first 2 quarters. The Spartans were led in scoring by Luke Creditt with 28 points, Ryan Potter had 11 points, and 5 other Spartans had 7 points. Victor Boggs owned the boards bringing down 11 rebounds in the game while 6 of them were offensive rebounds. Eli Rains contributed for a lot of points with his 9 assists. On Tuesday, the Spartans hosted Dixie for the start of the second round of league play. The Greyhounds beat Waynesville in the first match so this game meant a lot in league play as the Spartans were also looking for revenge. The Spartans jumped out to another great start with the help of the hot shooting hands of Luke Creditt and Chase Gianatassio, in which both had 9 first quarter points out of the 26 total for the quarter. The Spartans led by 15 at the end of the first quarter and also at halftime, but the feisty Greyhounds from Dixie did not go away. The Greyhounds outscored the Spartans in the third quarter 17-9 to close the lead to 7. The Spartans were able to hold on and win even though the play was sloppy at times. Waynesville won 68-61. The Spartans were led in scoring by Luke Creditt with 19, Chase Gianatassio with 17, Joe Feldmann with 15, and Ryan Potter had 9. Luke also led the team with 10 rebounds and 6 assists. The Spartans will be back in action tonight at Oakwood. Saturday the Spartans will host Bellbrook which will also be “Hall of Fame Night” during halftime of the Varsity boys game.

CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING
Carbon Monoxide is called the “silent killer”. It is difficult to detect, as it is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. Because you can’t see, taste or smell it, carbon monoxide can kill you before you even know it is there. With the winter season upon us, experts are warning residents to get their furnaces inspected by a professional. The most common reason for carbon monoxide poisoning from household furnaces is lack of maintenance. Any fuel burning appliance, vehicle, tool or other device has the potential to produce dangerous levels of carbon monoxide gas. Examples of carbon monoxide producing devices commonly in use in or around your home include fuel fired furnaces (non electric), gas water heaters, fireplaces and wood stoves, gas stoves, gas dryers, charcoal grills, lawnmowers, snow blowers and other yard equipment (non electric), and automobiles. There are carbon monoxide detectors available that are easy to install in your home. Most plug right into an electric outlet or use batteries. A detector will warn you in an event that there is a carbon monoxide leak in your home. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include:
- Flu-like symptoms
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Weakness or clumsiness
- Blurry vision
- Fatigue
- Loss of consciousness
If you have a carbon monoxide detector and the alarm goes off remember the following:
-Treat all alarms as the real thing.
-Leave the house immediately.
-Leave the door open on the way out.
-Call the fire department from a neighbor’s house.
-Get medical help.
-Do not return to the house until inspected by a professional.
