GOOD NEWS FRIDAY

March 25, 2011

NEWS FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT’S OFFICE

PROFILE OF EXCELLENCE
The Profile of Excellence is a profile of a district staff member, alumni or student who is committed to excellence and notable accomplishments.

It is time again to spotlight the individual who truly furthers the aims and pillars of Wayne Local Schools by going “beyond the call of duty” not merely settling for the ordinary.

When asked what excellence meant to them this is what our recipient said “True excellence comes from caring about your students no matter what their story or where they come from.”  To read more and find out whom our profile is on click here.  Profile of Excellence

Pat Dubbs, Superintendent

WAYNE LOCAL HALL OF FAME

The Wayne Local Hall of Fame exists to recognize individuals who exemplified excellence in two categories: 1) Academic Leadership (accomplishments while a student in the Wayne Local School District, and/or 2) Success and Citizenship (accomplishments after graduation from Wayne Local School District, or while an employee of the school district, or for other significant contributions to the school district).
Nomination forms may be picked up in the Superintendent's office or click here to access an online form. Deadline for forms is April 15, 2011. The recipients of the Hall of Fame award will be announced at the 2011 Wayne Local Alumni Dinner Saturday, May 28

SPECIAL EDUCATION PARENT SURVEY (4/29)

In relation to the grant recently received by our district, a parent survey has been developed to solicit parent input for our special education program.  All parents of students who are receiving special education services (who are on an IEP) are asked to complete this survey.  This may be done confidentially online at the following link
http://wayne-local.net/limesurvey/index.php?sid=46615&lang=en.  A paper-form option will also be mailed to parents soon.  Wayne Local Schools has been awarded a $29,000 special education grant to examine service delivery, increase teacher effectiveness and improve the school performance of students with disabilities.

DETAILS FROM MRS. DURHAM’S DYNAMITE KINDERGARTEN CLASS

We are so glad that spring is near.  As we head into spring, please remember that the temperature can change from day to day and to dress your child appropriately for the weather conditions. We go outside everyday unless it is raining or below 32 degrees.

We just conclude our third quarter assessments and the students did an excellent job. Report cards will go home with the students on Friday, March 25th.  Please sign and return the orange envelope. You may keep the report card and graphs for your reference.

In math, we have studied time of day, and reading clocks to the whole hour. We also explored coins and their values. Now, during calendar time, we are practicing to make coin amounts that correspond with the date. We have been practicing how to measure objects with nonstandard units and how to compare object by size and weight. We are now beginning our unit on graphs.

In language arts, we are writing short stories with correct punctuation and capitalization. We will conclude our study of alphabet letters by learning about the letters y, z, q, and u. We will also study the letter sounds. We are becoming experts at identifying characters, settings, problems, and solutions in a story. We are able to answer all types of comprehension questions about stories read to us. Please continue to read to your child every night or have your child read to you. By practicing your child’s reading and word list, you will help your child develop his/her reading fluency and his/her ability to sound out words independently.

As we near the end of the school year, many activities will be occurring. Please check your child’s folder nightly for upcoming events.

Enjoy the wonderful spring days.

“YEE HAW” FOR MS. YEE’S KINDERGARTEN CLASS!

March is a busy month in Full-day Kindergarten! We have 8 weeks left until we can say “Goodbye” to kindergarten and “Hello” to First grade.  Last week, we finished our 3rd Quarter Assessments and Report Cards go home today!  Although we are closing in on the last days of school, kindergartners are continuing to be challenged and prepared for upcoming DIBELS Testing and Reading Assessments in May.

In Math, students will soon complete Chapter 10 on Data, Graphing, and Probability. Kindergarteners are learning to display data on picture graphs, interpret data on a graph to solve problems, read a tally table, and display answers to a two-choice survey using a tally table. In addition, kindergartners are participating in activities involving chance and exploring probability by determining an event which is more likely, equally likely, or less likely to occur. Students also make predictions to solve problems. Next month, students will begin learning about addition.  They will create number sentences and use math manipulatives to find the sum.

In Language Arts, we are almost finished learning about all the letters and sounds. Last week we focused on letter Jj, and this week we are learning letters Yy and Zz. During The Daily Five, we are reviewing and practicing CAFÉ strategies (Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expand Vocabulary) from our CAFÉ Board.  Students are learning to build STAMINIA in:  Read to Self, Work on Writing, Work on Words, Listening to Reading, and Read to Someone. While reading in the Daily Five, students are learning to choose Good-Fit books.

During Journal Time, students write multiple sentences or short stories in their journals and illustrate. Before reading a class story, students are asked to read the pictures, make predictions, and ask questions about the story. While reading, students are encouraged to ask questions. After reading, students are learning how to complete a retelling of the story by using the Retelling Rope. They are answering questions about characters, setting, problem, beginning, middle 1, middle 2, end of story, then asked to solve the problem.  I encourage parents to work each night with their child to support what they are learning in school.  Please continue to read nightly and practice the word list. Practicing the word list at home will help to increase your child’s reading fluency and ability to sound words out.

In May, kindergartners will be going on a field trip to Boonshoft. The AM classes will be going on Thursday, May 26th, and the PM and Full-Day classes will go on Friday, May 27th

Our weather is very unpredictable in March and April. Please remember to help your child dress appropriately for the weather conditions.

Have a wonderful spring!

Your Partner in Education,
Darcey Yee    dyee@wayne-local.com

ATTENTION HIGH SCHOOL JR PARENTS
It’s time to start thinking about the 2011 After-Prom, which will immediately follow Prom on April 30, 2011.  It’s up to us parents to ensure that our kids have a fun, safe & memorable night. We will provide inflatables, a variety of games, lots of food & drinks, & prizes will be given out all night long. Last year we had a great turnout with almost 180 kids in attendance. In order to make this another successful After-Prom, we need as many volunteers as possible.  I also need a Jr. parent to take over my position as President of the committee. I will guide you through everything as well as the other returning Sr. parents.
Please call, text or email me your name, child’s name & contact # if you are willing to be a part of this special night.

WELLNESS

Warren County Combined Health Dist. Newsletter – Mar. 2011

WARREN COUNTY 2-1-1

Warren County 2-1-1 is a non-emergency helpline that can be accessed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, connecting callers to Warren County’s essential health and human services.  Caring, trained call specialists use a comprehensive resource database to refer people to the programs that can help or alleviate their need.  This free and confidential service offers quality factual and current information.  You can “Get Connected” by dialing 2-1-1, an easy to remember telephone number that Warren County residents call to reach the 2-1-1 Call Center specialists.  The comprehensive database of resources consists of health and human services, community resources, and local, state and federal government agencies.  2-1-1 can help you find resources such as local food banks, shelters, clothing, rent assistance, help with paying utilities, foreclosure assistance and much, much more.  The 2-1-1 Information and Referral Service is an extension of what has been available for nearly 20 years.  This new service from the Warren County United Way launched in August 2010 enables residents to dial “2-1-1” from any Warren County land wire phone and talk with a live person 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  You can also dial toll-free 1888-775-1260.  The person taking the call will assess what the caller is looking for and put them in touch with the available resources in Warren County.  The I&R function has grown in importance in recent years in some measure due to the economic downturn.  People need information about programs and services as never before.  In addition, if there is a disaster in the county, the 2-1-1 service system is compatible with other similar services in the state to take calls from Warren County residents.  This also takes the burden off of the 911 operators so that they can take care of real emergencies.  When disaster strikes, the Information & Referral staff is in a position to help those affected and move to do so in the quickest way possible.  2-1-1 played a pivotal role in assisting the Village of South Lebanon and Warren County’s Emergency Management during its recent water outage emergency.  A major water main break in January resulted in a declaration of a water boil advisory and much of South Lebanon was without water.  By calling 2-1-1, residents were given up-to-date information about fresh water distribution, port-a-lets, and shower facilities set up at the YMCA in Lebanon.  The 2-1-1 service continually searches for and investigates new resources in the community that can help meet people’s needs.  Every effort is made to secure information concerning all known service agencies and organizations.  We depend on the community to be a partner with us in our efforts to provide current, updated information.  Mary F. Gilliam is the Warren County United Way I&R Resource Specialist who maintains the database and can be reached by dialing the United Way office at 513-932-3987, ext 100.
