KEEPING IT HEALTHY

High school health is currently finishing up growth and development.  The next unit we will cover is tobacco, drugs and alcohol.  One of the assignments we will be creating is an anti-tobacco song that students are responsible to sing.  The middle school has been learning all about communicable and non-communicable diseases and the importance of the immune system.  My fourth rotation of six grade students have just finished learning about the significance of caring for their skin, eyes, teeth and ears regularly.

MRS. BACK SIXTH GRADE

The sixth grade hall has been buzzing with activity as usual.  The students have been working on a unit in reading dealing with slavery.  In my classes, they finished a historical novel about life as a slave.  (Elijah of Buxton, Numbering All the Bones, or Freedom Crossing.)They have also been reading information from a Scholastic website about slavery and the Civil War.  They have had to answer comprehension questions using higher level thinking skills, and create a project and writing assignment.  It’s always exciting when the characters in the novels make history come alive.  We have had some incredible discussions in class during our literature circle times.  We continue to learn new vocabulary words, and work on Latin and Greek roots in reading.  The computer programs we use to support our classwork have been very beneficial. In the midst of all this work, we’ve even had a few practice achievement tests to review some skills to assist the students when they take their test in May.  A lot of our work has been to prepare the students for sixth grade camp adventures. We want to remind our parents that the camp fees are due on or before April 1.  They can also expect packing lists, medical lists, and other information to come home soon.

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICIANS ARE EXCELLENT (AND SUPERIOR)!

Eight high school musicians challenged themselves musically by preparing either a solo or a small group ensemble piece to perform in front of a judge at the OMEA District 13 Solo and Ensemble Adjudicated Event, held on Saturday, February 19th.  All of our students earned the top two ratings!  Freshman Laura Kennard (flute solo), and sophomores Josh Roeser (piano solo) and Clara Young (marimba solo) earned a rating of Excellent (II), and Senior Katie Stephens (euphonium solo) and the clarinet quartet of Sophomore Jordan Moore and Juniors Melissa Fisher, Chelsey Moeller and Paul Hudson earned Superior (I) ratings!  As an extra bonus, the band boosters held a drawing to award the hard work of these individuals – Melissa won a $50 gift card, Katie and Chelsey won a $25 gift card, and Josh, Clara, Jordan, Laura and Paul all won $10 gift cards.  Congratulations to these fine musicians!

WAYNESVILLE HIGH SCHOOL BAND AND CHOIR TO PERFORM AT CONTEST

On Friday, March 11, 2011, at 8:30pm, the Waynesville High School Concert Band will be taking the stage at Madison High School in hopes of earning a Superior rating (I) at the OMEA District 13 Large Group Adjudicated Event.  This annual contest gives area bands and choirs the opportunity to polish three pieces of music then perform in front of three judges, who rate the performance on tone, intonation, interpretation and technique.  The judges then award a score of I through V, with I being Superior, II Excellent, etc.  After the ensemble’s performance on stage, they are then directed to the sight-reading room where music that has never been seen before is passed out to the group.  The students and director are given four minutes to look over the music silently, and an additional four minutes for the director to talk the students through the piece.  After that, the ensemble then plays or sings the piece of music, trying to perform it with as few errors as possible.  The sight-reading judge then awards the group a rating as well, and all four judges’ ratings are added together.  If the combined scores are between 4 and 6, the band receives a Superior rating (I) and is eligible to perform at State Large Group Adjudicated Event.
The Waynesville High School Concert Band has been preparing three pieces since early January—Columbian March arranged by Gene Milford, Andromeda by David Shaffer, and Simple Gifts: Four Shaker Songs by Frank Ticheli.  January and February’s snow days slowed the band’s progress, but they have been working very hard the past few weeks to polish the music, and hope to see a large crowd at Madison High School next Friday for their performance at contest!

Likewise, the choir has been working on music to take to contest.  Their performance is on Saturday, March 12, 2011 at Lebanon Junior High School.  They take the stage at 3:00pm.  Please come out and support these wonderful organizations!

MIDDLE SCHOOL CONCERT COMING SOON

Mark your calendars for Monday, March 14th at 7:00pm – it’s time for the next Middle School Concert!  All middle school bands and choirs will be performing in the high school gym.  In honor of the month of March, all three middle school bands have been working on marches, learning about the style and form of these unique pieces of band literature.  In addition, each band will be playing a thematic piece that has posed new challenges for our young musicians.  Come support the hard work these students have been making – you will notice a huge difference from December’s Winter Concert!

CAMP INVENTION – A PROGRAM OF INVENT NOW

In partnership with Invent Now, Wayne Local School District is pleased to offer the nationally-acclaimed Camp Invention program to children entering grades one through six this summer.  This exciting, weeklong adventure in creativity immerses children in imaginative play that reinforces and supplements school-year learning in the subjects of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), as well as history and the arts.  Children will work together to seek innovative solutions to real-world problems and sharpen critical 21st century learning skills such as teamwork and creative problem solving as they rotate through five modules each day that disguise learning as fun.

This exciting week of five fun-filled modules begins on June 20, 2011 when Denise Blevins will direct the Camp Invention SPARK program at Waynesville High School.  In the WILD:  Wondrous Innovations and Living Designs™ module, children will venture on a WILD animal excursion to investigate the most innovative survival traits on the planet.  Children will build a clubhouse, decipher puzzling codes, and work together to solve a mystery in The Curious Cypher Club module.  In the Bounce!  An Atomic Journey™ module, children will bounce their way through atoms, molecules, mixtures, and compounds to discover the science behind bouncy balls.  Children will use nontraditional equipment (such as water balloons) to add their own twists to classic games in the Game On:  Power Play™ module.  Finally, a participant favorite, children will be introduced to tool safety as they disassemble a discarded household appliance and use its pieces and parts to invent a working, multi-step machine in the I Can Invent:  Edison’s Workshop™ module.  Local educators will facilitate program modules, and enthusiastic high school and middle school students will serve as program counselors and Jr. counselors – ensuring that one staff member is in place for every eight children.

FREE childcare will be provided from 6am-camp start (9am) and from camp end (3:30pm)-6pm. Waynesville High School Honor Society will be providing this service as a service to the community. Please contact Denise Blevins to reserve your childcare spot for camp!

Register on or before March 30, 2011 for only $50 down and receive $25 OFF.  Every registration includes a free Camp Invention T-shirt.  Availability is limited, so visit www.campinvention.org or call 800.968.4332 to reserve your child’s spot today!

During the week of March 14-18 all sophomores will be taking the Ohio Graduation Test in the areas of Reading, Math, Writing, Science, and Social Studies.  I believe our district prepares our students well starting as far back as in the Elementary; however I still suggest visiting the Ohio Department of Education’s website to review released tests from past years.  Spending 10 minutes every night on your own reviewing questions will help tremendously. WCESC PARENT SURVEY
The Warren County Educational Service Center is participating in a federal grant from the Department of Education called The Integration of Schools and Mental Health Services. The goals of this grant include assessing mental health service needs for students in Warren County, and finding ways to address those needs. The grant team really wants to hear from Waynesville parents to see what kind of experiences you have had with mental health services for your children. Please take a few minutes to complete a brief parent survey that can be accessed by clicking on this link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/YQ6RTJD  . The results of this survey will help identify gaps in mental health services for students, and to identify mental health topics parents are interested in. Thank you for your time!
