BURCHFIELD’S CLASSES ON-LINE FOR 2010-11

The page will include notes, chapter syllabi, and general information pertaining to all classes. As usual, grades can be found in Progress Book, yet parents with questions or concerns may contact me at any time at gburchfield@wayne-local.com, or by phone at 897-2776 (x4023).
GREETINGS FROM THE SIXTH GRADE HALLWAY
This year is off to an exciting start! Our new sixth graders have done a great job transitioning from the elementary school to the middle school. Changing classes, dealing with lockers that sometimes have stubborn combination locks, and working through our new schedule has been a breeze for our students.
One of our focus areas this year will be on vocabulary and strengthening our students’ writing skills. This year, students will be enriching their vocabulary through the use of the Vocabulary Workshop and through our exploration of many Greek and Latin roots. With this acquisition of vocabulary, we will concentrate on improving our writing through the use of the John Collins Writing Program. This writing program will be used across the curriculum in all classrooms, and it has the ability to get everyone motivated to write.
Reader’s Workshop is also in full swing. Students have been exploring the different genres of literature in an effort to expand their horizons and to meet the September deadline. It is great to hear the students talking about great books they’ve read over summer as part of the Mary L. Cook reading program. Many students completed the Waynesville Middle School Passport to reading and turned it in when they returned to school. We know the impact reading has on all other learning and we are excited to be developing lifelong readers.
As the school year proceeds, I look forward to working with such a dynamic and motivated group of students!

WELCOME TO MRS. BAKER’S 5TH GRADE LANGUAGE ARTS
The students are learning about the Herdman’s and how it will be either the best or worst school year ever. Most students have decided they would not want the Herdman’s in their class.
Students are also being introduced to the new vocabulary book: Vocabulary Workshop. Students will be working out of these books every other week. On the other weeks, we will be working on suffixes and prefixes. The students have begun using learning logs in all classes using the Collins Writing approach. I have been impressed with the ideas that they have shared.
I am excited that this will be a great year for the 5th graders!

"YEE HAW" FOR MS. YEE'S KINDERGARTEN CLASS!
We have been in school for 10 days now and we have learned a lot! We are learning about our letters, sounds, and numbers. In the first component of Daily 5, students are learning how to Read to Self, choose a good place to sit for Reading to Self, and choosing a Good-Fit Book. This week we started the 2nd component of Daily 5, Work on Writing. Students are choosing a good place in the room to write and brainstorming topics to write about in their Writer’s Notebook. Students have been Book Shopping in our classroom library, and are learning how to correctly return books and choose new ones.
Next week, we are learning the letters M and S. Ask your children to tell you the sounds of these letters and name an object that matches these sounds. Please continue to work on their sight words. The new October homework calendar will contain the next set of words. Keep reviewing the September words along with the new October word list.
On Friday, September 24th, we will have Apple Day. The children will participate in apple tasting, make an apple seasons book, graph how many apples tall they are, graph which apple was their favorite apple, make apple prints using paint, listen to the story “Little Green Worm Finds A Home”, and make apple hats. The children will be tasting applesauce, apple juice, bread with apple butter on it, and a slice of apple. If they like what they taste, they will draw a smiley face in the circle. If they do not like it, they will draw a sad face in the circle. To graph how many apples tall they are, the students will lay on the floor next to apples that are in a line. Their partner will count how many apples tall they are. Then students will illustrate a picture of their results.
If you would like to volunteer for “Apple Day” or be a classroom helper, please contact me. You MUST be fingerprinted and have your fingerprints on file in the office.
I encourage parents to work each night with their children to support what they are learning in school.
Your Partner in Education,

NEWS FROM MRS. SYVERTSEN’S SPANISH CLASSES AND THE SPANISH CLUB
The year is moving quickly already and Spanish II students are reviewing Spanish I material the entire first quarter. They are revisiting the present tense and basic vocabulary such as: school materials, family, sports, and house nouns. They are increasing their vocabulary base by reading readers once a week and writing three times a week. Within the next two weeks we will be celebrating Hispanic heritage month by writing a paper on a famous Hispanic person. Students will gain a better understanding of the culture by learning about 68 famous Hispanic people.
Spanish III students are quickly reviewing all the grammar tenses. They are increasing their vocabulary base through newspaper articles, magazines, verb of the day exercises, and by writing three times a week. They are currently working on the command tense. To celebrate Hispanic heritage month they are working with a partner to create a cooking video of an authentic Hispanic food. Spanish IV students are fully immersed in the language and are currently studying Hispanic painters and musicians. They are focused on mastering the fluency of the Spanish language. Spanish IV students are involved in the Spanish Club where they can truly interact with the Hispanic community and culture through several field trips the Club takes throughout the year.
The Spanish Club had their first meeting on September 2nd to discuss our first field trip to the Hispanic Festival at Riverscape in Downtown Dayton this Saturday, September 11th from 3 to 8 pm. About 25 students will be participating in this field trip. If your child was unable to attend the first meeting and is interested in joining the Spanish Club we will be having a meeting on September 14th to discuss Spanish Club T-shirts and upcoming events. Our officers for the 2010-2011 school year are: President Elizabeth Evans, Vice President Wyatt Schroeder, Secretary Alyssa Ritchie, Treasurer Jimmy Fish, and Activity Coordinators Daria Boggs, Nathan Faul, and Kayla Theis. If you would like more information on upcoming events and a list of our current members visit www.vivaespana.weebly.com .

STEM UPDATE
STEM Update from WMS: I am Denise Blevins and I am teaching a very exciting sixth grade elective rotation called “STEM” – which stands for science, technology, engineering, and math. This STEM class was developed in response to President Obama’s clear statements throughout his campaign that “STEM is a priority, not only because we need today’s students to become tomorrow’s leaders in innovation and help our economy, but also because we need to increase STEM interest and skills overall for everybody. We need a science-savvy citizenry to help decide STEM policy and much more.” So far students have been learning about what technology truly is and just what the engineering design process is all about. Students have designed support systems using paper and tape to see how much weight they can support. (Did you know 30 pieces of paper can support 45 books!) Students are currently working on robotic arm designs to pick up a Styrofoam cup. I am pioneering this class and the Middle School hopes to continue to make STEM part of our future course offerings in the future. The thinking and problem solving skills being used will help our students connect the dots between disciplines. You never know, someone might find a strength he/she may have never known existed!
If you have any ideas for the class or have suggestions, I would love to hear from you! Feel free to contact me.

WHS STUDENT COUNCIL SPONSORS HOMECOMING SPIRIT BLOOD DRIVE
The Homecoming Spirit Week Blood Drive will be Tuesday, September 21, from 8 a.m. until noon. This has become a strong tradition of Homecoming at WHS. If you would like to donate, please contact Audrey Lueth, 897-2776, ext. 4011 or by email at alueth@wayne-local.com.
TRANSPORTATION SAFETY TIP
The safety of our students is our number 1 priority. In Ohio, all new bus drivers must complete classroom training and behind-the-wheel training with a State certified instructor. Veteran drivers go through 4 hrs. of in-service each school year. All bus drivers must submit to random drug and alcohol testing and their driving records are monitored. Each day every bus driver must complete and document a pre-trip inspection on their bus. Each bus contains a comprehensive set of paperwork that includes a detailed route sheet, seating chart, route hazards, and emergency care cards. All regular route Waynesville buses are equipped with 2-way radios and drivers carry cell phones for emergency purposes.
During the week of August 30th we conducted bus evacuation drills with our students. It is imperative that we review with students the process for exiting a bus in an orderly fashion. Our new buses have many safety features and we always want students to be familiar with the emergency exits and how to disengage an air door if necessary. Our drivers take great pride in their jobs and understand the importance of their position in the school district. They are the first and last person from the district that many students see during a school day. We believe it is important to have a highly qualified person sitting in that bus seat.

ATTENTION ALL ALUMNI BAND MEMBERS!!!
It’s hard to believe, but the Waynesville Homecoming game is fast approaching, and the Waynesville Spartan Marching Band would like to again invite any and all alumni band members to perform with us at the game. It’s Friday, September 24, 2010, and we will use the same format as we have in the past. Alums will meet at 4:30pm to collect music and instruments if necessary; we will rehearse in the stadium with the high school band from 5-6pm. Dinner will be provided for everyone from 6-6:30pm and then we’ll all line up together and march into the stadium, performing pre game and halftime together. To make things simple, we will do the same music as last year – Hang on Sloopy, Crazy Train, and The Hey Song for halftime, and our Fight Song (Notre Dame Victory March) and The Star Spangled Banner for pre game. We had a great turnout last year, and hope that we have even more participants this year! All I need to know is who plans on coming and whether or not an instrument is needed so we can be prepared. If anyone has questions, the Alumni Band page on the band’s website has been updated, which can be accessed via the Wayne Local website (under high school downloads/links), or you can email me directly.
Thank you so much and I really hope to see you soon!

EZ PAY UPDATE
If you had a balance on your lunch account at the end of the school year, your balance was carried over to this school year even if your child goes from the Elementary School to the Middle School. You can always log onto https://www.spsezpay.com/SPSEZpay/PR/PaymentCenter.aspx to check your balance.
WLS – EZPay Refresher
EZPay – a convenient way to pay school fees and deposit money on your child’s lunch account.
If you have not done so already we would encourage you to log on and register in the system. There is no cost to register and registering does not obligate you to pay for meals or fees using EZPay.
Registering allows you to view your child’s purchases and deposits made to their meal account each month. Registering also gives you the ability to view student fees. We would encourage you to register and sign up for the low balance email notices. The system will automatically email you when your child’s meal balance falls below $15.00.
The EZPay system is a helpful tool in tracking purchases/monies spent and to keep your child’s account current.
Please note you DO NOT have to pay by credit card to use the EZpay website - you still may send in checks to Wayne Local Schools. If you send a check please note your child’s name and pin number in the memo section of your check.
Registering is an easy process:
1) Logon to www.spsezpaywaynelocal.com
2) Create a user account
You will need your child’s pin number to set up an account
3) Browse the system and explore!

Hosted by Christian Service International Missionaries (CSI Ministries) from the Waynesville United Methodist Church
When? Saturday, September 18th, 2010 at 9:00 AM
Where? Beginning at the Corwin Peddler on the Little Miami Scenic Bike Trail in Corwin, Ohio (69 Maple St. Waynesville, OH 45068).
What is it? A fun walk/run hosted by the Vrettos family, missionaries with Christian Service International (CSI Ministries), to raise awareness of the level of poverty in Jamaica, the need for education and employment in the Highgate, Jamaica area and the need for support to cover school costs for Jamaican students.
How will the money be used? Half of the proceeds will be used to help fund CSI's new R.A.I.S.E Project. The purpose of this project is to provide educational facilities, as well as a working organic farm, to bring employment to the local community, as well as educational opportunities, private sustainable enterprise, and self-preservation through local production of a food source. Thus the acronym RAISE (Restoring Agriculture and Investing in Sustainable Enterprise). The remainder of the proceeds will benefit the Ministry Outreach Program/Jamaican Student Support Program which helps with various community projects, as well as covering the cost of schooling for local Jamaican students. There is no registration fee to enter. Instead we are asking each participant to collect donations and bring those with you to the Walk. A t-shirt will be given to those participants who collect over $25. Top pledge, top individual support raiser and many others will receive prizes!

“Confederate General John Hunt Morgan’s great raid through Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio in July 1863 was a grueling ride on horseback over more than a thousand miles. Morgan began in Tennessee with 2,500 cavalrymen and surrendered in Columbiana County Ohio with about 350 very tired men remaining. The Raid was the northernmost penetration of the Confederacy in the Union and provided the most significant military action occurring within the state of Ohio. In this talk, Mr. Horwitz will discuss the unique characteristics of this daring raid, its effect on the Civil War, and on civilians.”
