Ms. Jenni Hoehner Jenni Hoehner joined the math department at Waynesville High School. This is her fifth year teaching. Miss Pamela Bullock Pamela Bullock received her undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education and her Master’s Degree in Special Education from the University of Findlay. She likes to read and play with her dog, Zoar. Pam joins the Kindergarten and First Grade Teams as Intervention Specialist working with special needs students.
When asked why she came to Waynesville this was her reply, “I like the fact that Waynesville is a small community with faculty and staff who truly care about their students and families. It is a fun and friendly environment where learning takes place and every student is given the opportunity to perform to the best of their ability! Waynesville was the first and last place where I interviewed. I feel that I am very fortunate and blessed to have been chosen for this position and cannot wait to see what the future holds! I am honored to be a Waynesville Spartan!”
Miss Ashley Arkill Ashley Arkill completed her student teaching at Waynesville Elementary last year in 2nd Grade. She is a recent graduate of Wright State University with a degree in Early Childhood education. She is a huge Cincinnati Reds and Bengals fan. In her spare time she plays coed softball and volleyball and also enjoys golf. She is job sharing with Mrs. Johnson and really loves the Waynesville community.
Mrs. Ann Handle Ann Handle is filling in for Mrs. Bowersox until she returns from maternity leave. She and her husband Joe have two daughters – one in 3rd and one in 1st. She received her undergraduate degree in Early Childhood and Special Education from Stevens Point in Wisconsin, and her Master’s degree in Professional Development from Cardinal Stritch University in Wisconsin. Outside of the classroom she loves to camp, bike and play games with her family. She also enjoys reading, walking, and photography. We welcome her to our Kindergarten.
Mrs. Mindy Van Schaik Mindy will be working as a Paraprofessional at Wayne Local Schools this year. Mindy and her family moved to Waynesville last year. She and her husband have two daughters, one in 3rd grade and one in 1st grade. They picked Waynesville because it is a small town, its excellent rated school district and the genuine people they have met here. Before she moved here she was a Kindergarten Aide for 3 years, and had the pleasure of being a Substitute Aide for Waynesville last year. She is looking forward to a great year as a full time Paraprofessional.
Mrs. Holly Boggs Holly will be working as a Paraprofessional at Wayne Local Schools this year. She is a life-long resident of Waynesville. She and her husband, Tommy, are both graduates of WHS. They have one son, Jonas, who is a fourth grader at Waynesville Elementary. She has enjoyed working as a substitute paraprofessional in our district for the past 4 years. Holly said, “It is a privilege to serve everyday with our wonderful staff and super students.”
TRANSPORTATION Transporting our students to and from school is a very important part of our day. Please watch each week for a transportation safety tip. Responsibility Transporting children is a shared responsibility between home and school. The district is responsible for children once they board the bus. Families are responsible for the safety and supervision of their children to and from the designated bus stop as well as while they are waiting for school transportation. The district also asks that parents reinforce with their children the importance of obeying the bus rules. Such rules ensure the safety and welfare of all young riders. If a child repeatedly violates these rules, thus jeopardizing everyone's safety, the student may ultimately be denied the privilege of riding the bus. Thus, parent support for behaving appropriately in transit is essential. If you have a problem or concern related to the bus, you are encouraged to write the driver a note or to phone 513 897-8511 to reach the bus garage. Please try not to interrupt the bus schedule by talking directly with the driver while he or she is on the route.

BALANCING HEALTHY TOPICS
What a great start to the new school year!! Now that all the first week festivities are over we are now moving forward with lots of healthy material. Sixth grade health is currently learning about all three sides of the health triangle and what contributes to health issues when any of those three sides are not balanced. Seventh graders are beginning their first unit, mental health. They will be learning about how to handle disappointments in life and managing stress before it comes to a boiling point. The high school health classes are also working on mental health. Those classes will begin working on a mental health brochure shortly to get a more in depth understanding of different issues people in society may deal with.

WELCOME TO THE WHS WRITING CENTER!
The 16th annual Writing Center Workshop was held at Waynesville High School the week of August 9-13. Ten high school juniors and seniors – Andrea Ames, Kaitlyn Boggs, Jamie Crane, Maggie Dowe, Leighanne Dyer, Molly Gossard, Faith Hawk, Cierra Philpott, Andrew Valiquette, and Lindsey Young-- spent the week polishing their writing skills as well as developing their conferencing strategies to be used in the Writing Center, which is located in the high school media center. During the school year, these tutors will devote one class period per day to help students at any stage of the writing process and to conference on any type of writing – from poetry to analysis papers to college admission essays.
All high school students are encouraged to visit the Writing Center – either during a study hall, during ET/EH, or after school.
Congratulations to this year’s team and good luck in your new roles as Writing Center Tutors for 2010-11! Anyone from the community interested in visiting the Writing Center should contact the WC Advisor, Christine Tieman at (513) 897-2776, or ctieman@wayne-local.com .
MATH IN THE SUMMER? ARE YOU CRAZY?
Students of all ages (first grade through adult) attended the free math tutoring sessions provided by high school math teachers Jeni Hoehner and Tess Rivero throughout the summer. Students improved multiplication facts, worked on summer assignments, and reviewed for standardized tests. Parent Martha Evans was a big help as were Mrs. Rivero’s parents. A big “thank you” goes out to them, to all of the students who helped and who attended, and to the parents who brought their children to the library. Tess Rivero, NBCT Trivero@wayne-local.com http://rivero.weebly.com www.youtube.com/spartanmath
GET CONNECTED! Each teacher in the high school math department is maintaining a webpage for his/her classes. Please be sure to check these sites for daily class notes and other important information. Additionally, the Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II books are all online. Instructions for accessing them can be found on any one of the sites below. We are grateful to be in a district that supports these initiatives! SIXTH GRADE BEGINNINGS
Sixth grade has begun with a bang! We have some fantastic students who are ready to work to make this a great year. As always, there is much to learn about procedures and responsibilities, and we are very happy with the students’ positive attitudes. This year they have mastered the art of opening and closing lockers quite effectively. Most of them have adjusted to their busy schedules, and our only difficulty has been the horribly hot weather. In Language Arts, the students have begun their Readers’ Workshop reading. This is a program designed to allow students to read books of their choice during the year. If they follow the guidelines all year, they will read at least sixteen books on their own. We will also read a few books together, and complete a short story unit. We have been working on vocabulary in Vocabulary Workshop, and the Greek and Latin roots. These programs really improved our vocabulary scores on the achievement test last year, and we believe they are very beneficial. In English, they practice correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation daily, and are learning to write simple essays. This includes learning the writing process and the writing traits. We are also using the John Collins writing method, which is a program designed to keep students writing across the curriculum all year. We are excited and looking forward to another awesome year at the middle school. Mrs. Back pback@wayne-local.com
FALL PLAY ANNOUNCED! AUDITIONS/INTERVIEWS NEXT WEEK!
W.H.S. is thrilled to announce this year’s fall play will be DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK by Tim Kelly. The play is a mystery spoof about a playwright who dies, leaving his estate to his two young cousins IF they can last a night in his home without losing their minds! Add to the mix his butler (Bones), housekeeper (Mrs. Skull), lawyer, secretary, favorite star, and his arch enemy, a drama critic, and the night is instantly filled with mayhem! Plus, with a deranged patient from the insane asylum next door on the loose, DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK will take you on twists and turns until you DIE laughing!
Tim Kelly is often called “America’s most published playwright” for creating over 300 scripts. DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK premiered at Northern Kentucky University in 1991 and received the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Corbett-Post Award for Excellence in Playwriting.
GET INVOLVED! Interviews to be part of the tech staff (backstage) will be held on Tuesday, September 7. Cast auditions (onstage) will be Wednesday, September 8. Interested students can pick up information and sign up for interview/audition time slots in H.S. Room 12. Contact director Jason Hamen or visit the W.H.S. Drama website for more details and downloads of the same papers that are available in Room 12.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS! Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark will be presented November 11-13 at 7:30. Tickets are $5 for students/seniors and $8 for adults and will be on sale starting in October.
SUPPORT THIS SHOW! We depend on your generous support to continue presenting shows for our audience and to provide meaningful theatre arts experiences for our students. Visit the W.H.S. Drama website to download a sponsorship brochure for more information about how you can contribute to the success of Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark!

ATTENTION ALL ALUMNI BAND MEMBERS!!!
It’s hard to believe, but the Waynesville Homecoming game is fast approaching, and the Waynesville Spartan Marching Band would like to again invite any and all alumni band members to perform with us at the game. It’s Friday, September 24, 2010, and we will use the same format as we have in the past. Alums will meet at 4:30pm to collect music and instruments if necessary; we will rehearse in the stadium with the high school band from 5-6pm. Dinner will be provided for everyone from 6-6:30pm and then we’ll all line up together and march into the stadium, performing pre game and halftime together. To make things simple, we will do the same music as last year – Hang on Sloopy, Crazy Train, and The Hey Song for halftime, and our Fight Song (Notre Dame Victory March) and The Star Spangled Banner for pre game. We had a great turnout last year, and hope that we have even more participants this year! All I need to know is who plans on coming and whether or not an instrument is needed so we can be prepared. If anyone has questions, the Alumni Band page on the band’s website has been updated, which can be accessed via the Wayne Local website (under high school downloads/links), or you can email me directly. Thank you so much and I really hope to see you soon!

WELCOME BACK TO ELEM GYM CLASS!!
It was nice to see the students come in to class the first day full of energy and ready to start playing games. I wish it were that easy. We spent the first class going over the rules of how to behave, treat others with respect, be a good sport, and all the safety issues that come with a class of 23-30 students running around in the gym. Even though it has been hot, we have been able to get outside and start a soccer unit. Weather permitting we will try to stay outside the next few weeks and work on a baseball related game, flag football, croquet, bocce, frisbee golf, and run a timed lap around the track. Parents please help and make sure that your child has the proper gym shoes on for the day of his/her gym class. This will help keep your child and the other students more safe and free from injury. Thank you for your support! I look forward to another fun filled year.
High School boys basketball open gyms start back Sept 8 at 6:30-8:00 and will continue on Mondays and Wednesdays thru October. Tryouts will start Nov 5!

SCHOOL CLOSINGS The quickest and most accurate way to learn of a delay or closing is to check our school district website at www.wayne-local.com. This will always be the very first place a change in school schedules is reported. If there is no message about school schedules on the main page then no change has been made.
The next way to get fast information is from Cnotify. You can learn more about Cnotify on the school district’s webpage. It takes about one hour to call all employees and parents, but text messages are almost instantaneous.
Of course, we will notify all local TV and radio stations, but it can take up to thirty minutes before they report our information.
SPORTS NEWS
Philpot gets first win as Head Coach! The Spartans won their fifth straight season opener against East Clinton on Friday beating the Astros 31-16. Junior quarterback Luke Creditt — in his first varsity start — rushed for 160 yards and threw for 128 to lead the Spartans and give new coach Brandon Philpot his first varsity win. The Spartans (1-0) racked up almost 400 yards of offense, with 264 of those coming on the ground. Creditt threw a 37 yard touchdown to Ryan Potter to start the scoring off for the season. Creditt also ran for two touchdowns — covering 15 and 21 yards — while Caleb Powers scored from a yard out and Caleb Keeton kicked a 41-yard field goal to account for Waynesville’s scoring. The Waynesville defense smothered East Clinton’s ground game, holding the Astros (0-1) to 43 yards rushing on 25 attempts. Powers led the defense with 11 total tackles, while Isaac Hammonds and Josh Powell each had nine. Ty Black had an interception while Mike Tarkany and Michael Hooser both had two tackles for a loss. This week the Football team will travel to rival Clinton Massie. Come out and support your Spartans!
Waynesville will travel to Clinton Massie on Friday in the Battle for the Paddle game. Massie defeated Waynesville two times last season, once regular season and then in the playoffs. The Spartans will try and bring the paddle back to Waynesville this season!! The game will be live on WYNS 89.3 Fm and Hybridfm.net.
Lady Golfers Split a Pair On Tuesday, the Lady Spartans traveled to Springboro to take on the Panthers at Heatherwoode Golf Course and lost, 239-213. Rachel Johnson and Cory Nichols tied for low medalist among the Spartans by shooting a 57. Kayla Theis finished third with a score of 60. Wednesday the Spartans bounced back and defeated the Spartans of Valley View by a score of 222 to 247 at Holly Hills. Low scorers for Waynesville were sophomores Briana James and Katie Storer, each shooting a 54. Cory Nichols shot a 55. The Spartans will travel to Wilmington next Tuesday to compete against Clinton Massie and will play Fenwick at home on Wednesday.
Volleyball splits week! Spartan Volleyball hosted a home tri-match on Saturday, with Toledo Christian and Franklin. Varsity went 1-1, losing to a tough Toledo Christian team and defeating Franklin in their second match. On Tuesday, they traveled to Dixie and lost in 3 games. The team is gearing up for 2 away matches next week: Northridge on Tuesday and Milton Union on Thursday.
Cross Country off and running! The men's and women's cross country teams began their seasons with impressive races at the Bob Schul Invitational in Milton Union on Sat., Aug. 28th. Both teams finished 9th out of 26 teams in the combined division I-II race and 5 out of our 10 runners had personal best times in the first race of the year. The men's team was led by Spencer Wells and Cade Lowing both blistering the course in under 18 minutes. These two were followed by juniors Joe Feldmann, Evan Parish and newcomer Kurtis Sexton. The women were led by Shelby Cook who in her first cross country race ever went under 22 minutes for the 3.1 mile course. Shelby was followed by fellow juniors Molli Muterspaw, Brittany Patterson and Leighanne Dyer. Our next race was at the Tipp City Invitational on the following Tuesday. This was a hard, flat and dry 2 mile course. With temps hovering in the 90's the teams ran very well. For the women, out of 141 mostly D-I runners Brittany Patterson finished 38th, Molli Muterspaw 39th and Leighanne Dyer 54th. For the men the team finished 9th out of 18 teams. Out of 201 runners Spencer Wells placed 17th, followed by Cade Lowing 28th, Joe Feldmann 40th, Kurtis Sexton 85th and Evan Parish 86th. Our next race will be Wed., Sept. 8th at the Fairborn Inv. Next week the team will play Oakwood, Sidney and Madison all at home beginning on Tuesday.
Lady Spartans Soccer wins two! The Lady Spartans Soccer team defeated Dixie on Tuesday by a score of 10-0 and then defeated Oakwood on Thursday by a score of 5-2. The team will play at Northridge on Tuesday at 7:00 in a Varsity only match, and then travel to Milton Union on Thursday for a league match at 5:30 and 7:00.
When traveling to Milton Union, Dixie, Northridge, and Brookville you should take Social Row Rd to Austin Pike and get on I 75 at the new Austin Pike interchange. This will save about 15 minutes by avoiding Springboro.
Boys Soccer 0-1-1 on week! The Boys Soccer team tied Dixie on Tuesday night 3-3. The team was down 3 -1 in the second half and tied the score with less than 5 minutes to go in the game and had a good shot to win, but was saved by a diving stop by the Dixie goal keeper. The team then traveled to Oakwood on Thursday and lost to a very good Oakwood team by a score of 1 – 0. The team will be at home with Little Miami on Tuesday at 5:30 and 7 and at home with Milton Union on Thursday in a single game at 6:00.
Boys Golf looking Good! The boys’ golf team had a successful week finishing up the week 2-0 with victories over Valley View and Northridge. On Monday, the Spartans defeated Valley View 171-178. WELLNESS Warren County Combined Health District Newsletter Aug, 2010 UPDATED IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) announced additional immunization requirements for Kindergarten and 7th grade students for the 2010-2011 school year.
The changes in effect for the 2010-11 school year are:
- The addition of a tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) or tetanus and diphtheria (Td) booster requirement for 7th grade.
- The addition of a 2nd dose of varicella (chickenpox) vaccine for Kindergarten entry.
- A requirement that the final dose of polio vaccine be administered on or after the 4th birthday for Kindergarten entry.
These new Ohio requirements more closely reflect recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
By requiring these doses, ODH believes there will be a significant reduction in outbreaks of these preventable diseases in Ohio schools.
