SUMMER READING FUN … FOR EVERYONE! HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH DEPARTMENT NEWS
While the structured school year may be “out” for the summer, we believe – as do you—that learning occurs year round. Your son/daughter has gained many skills this year, and we wish that to continue through summer reading.
Not only is reading a relaxing way to spend a hot July afternoon, summer reading has also been proven to help students maintain and even increase important reading skills. Conversely, students who do not read in the summer may drop as much as two years behind their peers in reading ability, which can affect everything from testing to writing. Most importantly though, we want our students to realize that reading is rewarding no matter what time of year.
Therefore, we are challenging all students to read at least one book. Every English teacher in grades nine, ten, eleven, and twelve will use the summer reading(s) as a basis for a discussion, writing, or other activities during the first week of school.
Also, we would like to encourage everyone to visit Waynesville’s Mary L. Cook Library as they have wonderful summer reading programs for children, teens, and adults. Your son/daughter has the opportunity to win awards and prizes there as well.
We look forward to hearing about all of the great things your son/daughter has read over the next few months, and we truly appreciate your support. If you need more information about each grade level’s summer reading, please visit our school’s home web page, www.wayne-local.com and click on “High School.” From there, scroll down to “Summer Assignments” and locate your child’s teacher/course for 2010-11.
HAPPY READING!
