Wayne Local Schools Celebrates 43rd Annual School Bus Safety Week.

October 19, 2009 – In honor of national School Bus Safety Week, I want to say thank
you to our transportation staff for their efforts and highlight the importance of school bus
safety awareness and education.

This year’s theme, Avoid Harm, Obey the Stop Arm, emphasizes the importance for
drivers to follow the rules of the road. The safety of our students is top priority. When
red lights flash and the stop sign and arm deploy all states require drivers to stop.

We think it is important to celebrate School Bus Safety Week. Our transportation staff’s
job is to ensure that students get to school safe and sound on each and every ride.

School buses offer solutions to four key issues facing our country:
1. Safety: School buses are the safest form of transportation for students.
2. Traffic: Every child riding a school bus represents one less car on the road,
especially in the congested area in and around schools, where children are at
highest risk.
3. Fuel Consumption: It is estimated that school bus transportation saves Americans
more than $6 billion a year on fuel costs.
4. Environment: Students riding in the school bus instead of the family car means
fewer car trips and less pollution.

Celebrated the third full week of October each year, School Bus Safety Week promotes
awareness on the local and state level. Wayne Local Schools acknowledges the
importance of bus safety by posting a weekly bus safety tip on our district website and in
Good News Friday.

Please join the Wayne Local Board of Education and its administration by saying Thank
You to all our transportation employees and remember this year’s safety theme: Avoid
Harm, Obey the Stop Arm.
