Waynesvile Spartan Reading Grant-Thank You!
On Friday, April 30 Waynesville Elementary School received a mini-grant of $1,470 from the Mental Health & Recovery Centers of Warren County. Prevention Specialist, Charlie Hartman, has been working with the 3rd/4th grade teachers to provide LIFE SKILLS, an evidence-based prevention program. Skills include self-esteem, decision-making, smoking, advertising, stress management, communication skills, social skills, and assertiveness. This program has been provided to our building free of charge. Shown in the picture is Jean Hartman, Waynesville Elementary Principal, receiving the check from Charlie Hartman.
Mrs. Beth Pendergraff, Third Grade teacher, has been working with Mr. Hartman to collaborate on a youth-led prevention grant called the "Spartan Reading Project." The goal of the program is to develop youth leaders who will read to their classmates and younger students as well as elderly adults in the community. Several books will be purchased on topics related to a young person's health and well-being: anti-bullying (which ties in very neatly with our OLWEUS program), self-esteem, and refusal skills related to peers and harmful actions.
Waynesville Elementary appreciates the cooperation of the Mental Health & Recovery Centers and their partnership to support our staff in developing the example, leadership, information, and training to help each student function in an honest, moral, and ethical manner in their family, community, and society.
Funding from the state to the local Recovery Services Board is providing ongoing youth-led initiatives state-wide. The books we purchase will benefit each student in our building for many years to come.
