WAYNESVILLE STUDENTS STAGE A READ-IN!!!!
ALL students of Wayne Local Schools, grades K-12, and all of their teachers and principals, marched onto the football field Monday, May 10, with their arms full of books and magazines ready to read. This was the kick off for the district-wide Right to Read Week. From magazines to thick paperbacks, all students brought something to read on the field for an hour. The theme for the week is "Reading Power", with activities playing off the Flower Power era of the 60's and 70's. Thus, the "Read-In"!!! Superintendent Pat Dubbs addressed the student body and staff, tying in the demonstrations of that era to this demonstration of our belief in our right to read, telling them that, "The freedom to read is an essential part of democracy."
The week emphasizes to students the enjoyment and importance of reading. Each school will continue to have different reading events throughout the week. At the elementary school, students will be told to "stop, drop, and read," throughout the day. In the middle school, a portion of each class period all week long is devoted to reading. In both schools there are Book Fairs going on, with a district-wide Family Night on Thursday, May 13th from 5:00 - 8:00. And in the high school and middle school, there are trivia and other contests as well.
