Many schools in the county and across the country are seeing an increase in a dangerous new trend known as vaping.  E-cigarettes, vape pens, or JUULs are electronic devices that emit a vapor that is inhaled by the user.  JUULs are small vaping devices that look like USB flash drives.  Some even charge when plugged into a laptop.  E-cigs or vapes can take on shapes similar to pens, pencils or markers.  The liquid solutions that are used in these devices may contain nicotine and other harmful chemicals.

Wayne Local Schools has always made student safety and student health a priority.  Some of these unregulated products may contain higher levels of nicotine than cigarettes.  The devices may also be used to dispense marijuana (THC) in an odorless method.  Medical professionals are concerned about nicotine exposure having a negative impact on addiction as well as harming developing brains.

As per school policy, the possession, distribution or use of any tobacco, drugs and/or smoking of electronic, “vapor,” or other substitute forms of cigarettes is prohibited in school, on school property or at school events.  Students who violate this policy shall be subject to disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and in accordance with policies of the Board.

If you or your child needs assistance regarding this matter, please don’t hesitate to notify a staff member or Counselor at the school.  If you suspect your child is using an illegal substance you can take them for an immediate assessment at one of the two places:

Solutions Community Counseling and Recovery Centers have walk -in drug and alcohol assessments at two locations: http://www.solutionsccrc.org/services/open-access-12/

If you suspect your child has a serious drug/alcohol problem, you can take them to an emergency room for an assessment as well.
