New Bus Stop Locations for 2026-27

Aug 4, 2026

As we prepare for the start of the new school year, we want to inform you of updates to the district’s bus stops. These changes will allow the WLS Transportation Department to operate more efficiently while continuing to provide safe, high-quality service for all bus riders.

Specific bus stop locations and route times will be available in the district’s new transportation app beginning Thursday, August 6. Families should look for a ParentSquare message with instructions for accessing the app. The app will also provide notifications about route changes, delays, and adjustments to pickup or arrival times.

ParentSquare will remain the district’s primary communication hub for information shared among families, teachers, coaches, schools, and the district. The transportation app will be used specifically for families with students who ride a bus.

Below are answers to questions families may have about the changes.

What changes are being made?

Beginning in August, many Wayne Local Schools bus stops will be consolidated, particularly within neighborhoods and subdivisions. Most stops will be located near or at an intersection.

We recognize that some students may need to travel farther from home to reach their bus stop than in previous years. Each stop has been carefully reviewed to ensure it is safe and complies with state law.

Why are bus stops being changed?

In the past, bus routes required drivers to spend significant time stopping and starting throughout neighborhoods and navigating smaller areas, including cul-de-sacs.

Because of funding reductions requiring focused cost-containment measures and the ongoing bus driver shortage affecting the district, this model is no longer operationally or financially sustainable.

Consolidating bus stops will make routes more time-efficient and reduce maintenance and repair costs associated with frequent stopping, including wear on tires and brakes.

Who made the decision to consolidate bus stops?

The decision was made following a thorough review and analysis of current bus stops by the WLS Transportation Department and district leadership.

When will updated bus stops be shared?

Updated bus stop information will be available on Friday, August 7, 2026. This will give families several days to locate the new stop and practice traveling to and from it with their bus rider.

Do these changes affect special education transportation?

No. These route changes do not affect specialized transportation services for students with disabilities.

Does state law allow these changes?

Yes. Wayne Local Schools is committed to complying with all state laws governing student transportation. Each updated bus stop has been reviewed to ensure compliance with applicable requirements.

What about students who live on heavily traveled main roads or rural roads?

Most bus stop changes will affect students who live in lower-traffic neighborhoods and subdivisions. Students will not be required to cross or walk along heavily traveled roads to reach their bus stops.

Will the bus make additional stops during rain or snow?

No. Bus stops will not change based on weather conditions. Students should be prepared for inclement weather and must be standing at their Designated Place of Safety at least five minutes before the scheduled arrival of the bus.

What adult supervision is required at bus stops?

Wayne Local Schools requires a parent, guardian, or other responsible adult to accompany preschool through second grade students while they wait at the bus stop and to be present when they are dropped off. This requirement will remain in effect.

May parents drive their students to the bus stop and wait in the car?

Parents and guardians may determine whether their student will walk or be driven to the bus stop. Vehicles must not block or interfere with the bus route.

Students must be out of the vehicle and standing at their Designated Place of Safety at least five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive.

May students ride bikes or scooters to the bus stop and take them to school?

Students should not bring bicycles, scooters, or similar items to the bus stop because these items are not permitted on school buses.

Who should I contact with a question or concern?

Questions about a student’s Designated Place of Safety, pickup time, drop-off time, or bus route may be emailed to the WLS Transportation Department at transportation@waynelocal.net.

As always, thank you for your partnership and for helping keep WLS students safe throughout the school year.
