GOOD NEWS FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT’S OFFICE SUMMER READING TIPS   Your children have grown to be great readers this year!  They have learned many new reading skills that will still need to be practiced over the summer to ensure retention and prevent summer reading setback.  Studies have shown that children, who do not read over the summer, may lose two- three months of reading achievement.  Over a six-year period, that can leave a student up to two years behind in reading achievement skills.  This summer, encourage your child to READ!  Reading is a great way to relax and it helps your child enter the next grade level prepared for success!   Below you will find some tips to make summer reading a fun experience for your child.  Keep books in the car and make sure a good book gets tucked into sports bags and backpacks.  Get your child his own library card.  Take your child often to browse for books and enjoy the summer reading program at The Mary L. Cook Public Library. Help your child select books on topics he/she is interested in and on their reading level.  Have your child choose a page in the book (not the first one) and read it.  If he/she doesn’t know five or more of the words, then the book is too hard for pleasure reading.  Try to limit TV and video games. Have a variety of reading materials around the house for your child to read.  Magazines, books on tape, and newspapers are all great!  When traveling with your child, ask him or her to read aloud to you traffic signs, road signs, store signs, maps, billboards, words on trucks and vans, menus, and other printed information you see. Does your child want to learn about something new? Perhaps he or she would like to learn about sewing, cooking, or gardening.  Find a book about it, and have your child read the instructions and then give it a try.  Have your child keep a journal during summer vacation.  Suggest that your child write at least two or three sentences a day about things he or she does, sees or thinks about each day. Your child can also write a letter to friends, or family telling them what they are doing during the summer to maintain the important writing skills they have developed during the school year. Play common word and language games such as Scrabble, Hang Man, Boggle, Smart Mouth, and MADLIBS.  It’s a fun way to build vocabulary and strengthen language skills. Mrs. Lora Schafer Rainbow Reading Teacher   lschafer@wayne-local.com 7TH GRADE MATH NEWS   It is hard to believe we are in the final stretch of the school year, and summer is just around the corner!  Seventh graders are finishing their last math unit – data analysis – before taking the state AIR assessments.  To review for the test, students will spend the next week “heading around the world.”  Each “country” is a different topic we have studied this year, and students must complete the topic (and correct it until it is perfect) to earn a stamp in their passport!  Special prizes will be awarded for the most stamps and hardest workers!   The first part of the math AIR assessment will be administered on April 27th, and the second math AIR is on April 28th.  We appreciate your support with testing and hope that students will come to school with a healthy breakfast, positive attitude and eagerness to demonstrate what they know!  They have worked so hard all year – now it is time to show how much they’ve grown!   Amanda Graf Mrsgraf.weebly.com agraf@wayne-local.com MRS. FRANZ’S KINDERGARTEN   The months have gone by so quickly.  It’s hard to believe the end of the school year is so near.  We have been very busy completing the kindergarten curriculum and getting ready for first grade.   In a few weeks, we will begin our last set of assessments.  The students will complete their final Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills, DIBELS, assessment on Wednesday, May 4th.  Also during the month of May the kindergarten students will take their Developmental Reading Assessment, DRA.  For this assessment, students are asked to read a new book and then retell the story using characters names and as many details as possible.  (How the story began, the correct sequence of events for the middle of the story, and how the story ended.)   All kindergarten students will also complete an assessment packet where they will need to identify 80 sight words, identify the number of objects in sets of 1-20, identify all initial consonant and vowel sounds, identify rhyming pairs, and solve simple addition and subtraction problems using counters.  Additionally, they will need to identify numbers 0-20, all the uppercase and lowercase letters, 5 shapes, (circle, square, rectangle, triangle, and hexagon, and  4 solids (cylinder, cone, cube, and sphere).   Along with all this hard work, we will have some fun.  All kindergarten students will go to the Cincinnati Children’s Museum on Friday, May 20th.  If you are fingerprinted and have had a background check, we could use your help.  Permission slips will be coming home in May.  We have a field day planned for Monday, May 23rd.  We will have a great time competing against our grade level peers.  Mrs. Franz’s all day class will compete with the am classes.  Mrs. Voelker’s all day class will compete with the pm classes.  Please come and cheer us on.  You do not have to be fingerprinted to watch.  If you are fingerprinted and have a background check, we would love to have your help.  Finally, we will have our end of the year picnic on Thursday, May 24th.  The all-day classes will eat our picnic during our pm snack time, so please send lunch money or pack your child’s lunch as usual.   I have truly enjoyed this school year and will treasure my memories of this class.  Students please keep reading and writing and visit the library this summer.    Mrs. Franz cfranz@wayne-local.com REFERRALS FOR SUBJECT & GRADE ACCELERATION   All gifted students are eligible to be tested and considered for subject and grade acceleration. A student may be considered for subject acceleration for placement in a classroom with other students who are at a higher grade level (e.g., a Kindergarten student going to a 1st grade room for math). A student may be considered for moving to a higher grade level than would normally be expected for the current year, skipping a grade in school (e.g., moving from 3rd to 5th grade over the summer or starting the year in 2nd grade, moving to 3rd grade during the year, and moving on to 4th grade after the summer). This year the Junior Class has been working diligently with as many as 20 volunteers on a regular basis!  The theme this year is Lost In Wonderland and is a spin off from the movie Alice In Wonderland.  The Committee has been working hard and many things will be made by hand!  We will entertain students on Saturday April 30, 2016 at Waynesville High School Gymnasium.  The full course dinner will be served promptly at 7:00pm and the dance will run from 8:00pm to 11:00pm.  The cost of the dance is $50.  Tickets will be on sale April 14th through the 22nd and the cut off is so we can give the caterer a complete head count.  Students will all receive a goodie bag with some extra special items to help remember this night.  We are looking forward to creating an awesome evening and memories for the Waynesville students to cherish.  If there are any junior dad’s that would like to help me with tear down of the gym we will start at 11:00pm and with the help of 6-10 dad’s we should be done in 2 hours or less.  Please contact me at kpurkey@wayne-local.com or 513-897-2761 with any questions or concerns or if you can help with tear down. Shinkle Academic Planning 6-12 ashinkle@wayne-local.com   HIGH TECH CAREER CAMP   -  Open to the Class of 2021 -   June 7-9, 2016  9:00 a.m.- 4:15 p.m.      Career Exploration -  Sinclair College -  FANUC Robotics   The High Tech Career Camp is facilitated by the Warren County Career Center. The camp focuses on the different career clusters and is a great for opportunity for career exploration. The students will be able to dive into hands-on high tech projects and explore how their interests fit future careers. Some of the small group rotations will focus on Advanced Technology and Robotics, Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning, Legal Office Technology Graphic Arts, Fire Science and Emergency Medical, Automotive Collision, Site Construction and Heavy Equipment, Digital Media Arts, Culinary Arts, Criminal Justice, Information Technology, and Science Technology and Engineering.   Not only will students get to learn and experience these different programs for two days at the WCCC, they will also have the opportunity to visit Sinclair College in Mason, Ohio.  Students will tour the campus, learn about academic programs offered, and discover ways to pay for college. Lastly, they will tour the FANUC Robotics America Corporation.   This High Tech Camp is a great way for students to enjoy team building fun and meet new friends from other Warren County neighboring schools.  There is also a complimentary Olive Garden camp dinner on the evening of the 9th for all campers and parents to attend.    In addition, and new this year, an optional JOBSHADOWING opportunity will be offered on June 10th (Friday) at the Atrium Hospital for a variety of career fields.    Current Seventh Graders will be bringing this flyer home bring home on April 4th. These programs offer enrichment and exploration of many interesting subjects.    The WSU office of Pre-College Programs in conjunction with the College of Science and Mathematics, College of Engineering and Computer Science, and the University Libraries are pleased to offer Exploring STEMM – Enriching Minds through Science 2016, as well as Residential Camps and Institutes focused on STEMM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Medicine.   Students who are selected will participate in a variety of STEMM disciplines over a two-day period. Girls Middle School Track This past week the girls competed in the Clinton Massie Relays meet and placed 5th.  Caroline Bensman placed 2nd in long jump with an impressive 13 ft. 9 in. jump.  Other 2nd place victories were awarded to the 4x800 relay team of Kailee Webb, Grace Moore, Megan Handle, and Hannah Gill;  the Distance Medley runners Kailee Webb, Jaiden Byram, D'Laney Lezotte, and Hannah Gill;  and the Sprint Medley with Megan Handle, Carli Brown, Caroline Bensman, and Grace Moore.  The Junior High Waynesville Invite is this Saturday, April 16th.  Come support our Spartans!   Waynesville Middle School Boys Track The Waynesville Middle School Boys track team travelled to Clinton Massie on Wednesday to take on a “Relay” meet.  These meets consists of multiple types of relays that are not normally run in regular meets, so we went there to have everyone participate and try their best at this fun, but difficult meet.  The boys placed in 6 of the 12 events versus some very tough competition from Wilmington, Miami Trace, Clinton Massie, East Clinton and Blanchester schools. The 4x8 team, (Colin Amato, Kaden Harvey, Stephen Muterspaw, Levi Morgan) ran this two mile race with great perseverance and finished 3rd.  Our shuttle hurdle team finished first overall and the relay members of Dominic Riviello, Anthony Curry, Parker Struewing and Mac Greely really stepped it up, as a couple of them had never run hurdles before.  Other placing finishers were Parker Struewing (High Jump), the 4x4 team earned third (Miller, Curry, Dietz & Greer), Sprint Medley earned third(Tanner Johnson, Seth Bloom, Johnny McCoy, Alex Hines), the Distance Medley also earned third( Justin Vaughn, Austin Vaughn, Miles Emerson, Denver Johnson) and in the field events, Parker Struewing finished third in the High Jump.  Saturday is our HOME Invitational starting with field events at 10 am, running events at 11 am.  The weather should be perfect!   The Spartan tennis team got off to a cold and windy start with a 4-1 win at Altar. The next match was a close 2-3 loss to Dayton Christian The next match we bounced back with a 5-0 win verses Greeneview and a 3-2 conference win over Dixie. Wednesday night we lost a close match 2-3 to Monroe and Thursday night we beat Franklin 4-1.  Of note is the 6-0 start of 3rd singles player Ben Muth who is basically a human wall and hits everything back. Also with a 5-0 record is the second doubles team of Lucas Mohme and Ryan Teeters whom the team has nicknamed the twin towers. Our next match is a conference match vs Carlisle Friday night the 15th. They picked up a league win vs. Northridge on Wednesday (12-1) and defeated Indian Hill Thursday (3-1) in a game that was streamed live online and rebroadcast on Time Warner Cable's local sports channel later in the evening. The Spartan Bats, now 6-2 overall and 3-0 in SWBL play, will face off with league opponent Preble Shawnee Friday at 5 PM followed by a Saturday evening game with Miami East, also beginning at 5 PM. The upcoming week looks to be busy with 6 games in 6 days, 4 of which are league games. The Junior Varsity continued its hot streak as well, defeating Dixie, Northridge, and Indian Hill in the last week.    Upcoming Varsity schedule (all games at 5 PM): Mon. 4/18 @ Preble Shawnee Tues. 4/19 @ Northridge Wed. 4/20 @ Madison Fri. 4/22 vs. Madison   Upcoming JV schedule (all games at 5 PM): Mon. 4/18 vs. Preble Shawnee Tues. 4/19 vs. Northridge Wed. 4/20 vs. Madison Fri. 4/22 @ Madison   The Waynesville Spartans JV sixth-inning burst enough to top Northridge (Dayton, OH), 23-6  The Waynesville Spartans JV jumped out to an early lead on Northridge and captured a 23-6 victory on Wednesday.  Nine runs in the first three innings allowed the Waynesville Spartans JV to put the game away early.    A walk by Micah Spille, an RBI single by Anthony Carmichael, a hit by pitch, a walk by Alex Hurley, an RBI single by Tyler Wells, and an RBI single by Ryan Lay in the first inning and a two-run error and a groundout by Hurley during the second inning fueled the Waynesville Spartans JV's offense early. Spille got on base five times in the game for the Waynesville Spartans JV. He scored four runs and had three RBIs.    The Waynesville Spartans JV easily handled Northridge pitching as seven hitters combined for 11 hits, 12 RBIs and 17 runs scored.    Great pitching leads the Waynesville Spartans JV past Indian Hill (Cincinnati, OH) 8-0  A superb effort by Brady Stone led the Waynesville Spartans JV to an 8-0 win in seven innings over Indian Hill on Thursday. The Waynesville Spartans JV's Stone kept Indian Hill off the scoreboard for all seven innings he was on the rubber. He pitched a shutout, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out nine.    The Waynesville Spartans JV beat Indian Hill thanks to 12 hits, including six extra base hits. The Waynesville Spartans JV scored three runs in the sixth on the Waynesville Spartans JV scored in the sixth on a passed ball and a two-run single by Jonas Boggs.   Anthony Carmichael had two extra-base hits for the Waynesville Spartans JV.  The Waynesville Spartans JV's Cameron Anderson, Ryan Lay, Carmichael and Boggs combined for nine hits and seven RBIs.  The Waynesville Spartans JV never surrendered the lead after the first inning, scoring three runs on two doubles. After posting one run in the fourth, the Waynesville Spartans JV again scored one in the fifth. In the fourth, the Waynesville Spartans JV scored on an RBI double by Anderson, scoring Jared Weaver.    The Varsity and JV softball teams enjoyed a successful week of games this week.  The Varsity team logged back-to-back run rule wins against Northridge and Bishop Fenwick.  Senior pitcher Tori Wilson threw a complete game shutout against Northridge, and Junior pitcher Sara Jones got the complete game win against Bishop Fenwick on Thursday.  The JV team is off to a great start racking up double digit scores in multiple games so far this season, and enjoying a .500 start to the season.  Come out and support our girls at an upcoming home game, schedules are on the school website. WAYNESVILLE SPARTANS TO PLAY AT FIFTH THIRD FIELD – DAYTON DRAGONS TICKETS AVAILABLE   The WHS varsity baseball team will once again be selling Dayton Dragons tickets to members of the community. In exchange for the sale of tickets, the varsity team will have the opportunity to play at Fifth Third Field on Thursday, May 5th at 4:30 PM against Oakwood High School. This written request is subject to approval of the school principal or designee. Bus drivers must receive notification by the school office when approval is given to a student to change to an alternate stop or bus. WELLNESS WHEN & HOW TO WASH YOUR HANDS Keeping hands clean through improved hand hygiene is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. Many diseases and conditions are spread by not washing hands with soap and clean, running water. If clean, running water is not accessible, as is common in many parts of the world, use soap and available water. If soap and water are unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol to clean hands.   When should you wash your hands? Before, during, and after preparing food Before eating food Before and after caring for someone who is sick Before and after treating a cut or wound After using the toilet After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste After handling pet food or pet treats After touching garbage How should you wash your hands? Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the "Happy Birthday" song from beginning to end twice. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them. What should you do if you don’t have soap and clean, running water? Washing hands with soap and water is the best way to reduce the number of germs on them in most situations. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers can quickly reduce the number of germs on hands in some situations, but sanitizers do not eliminate all types of germs. Hand sanitizers are not as effective when hands are visibly dirty or greasy. How do you use hand sanitizers? Apply the product to the palm of one hand (read the label to learn the correct amount). Rub your hands together. Rub the product over all surfaces of your hands and fingers until your hands are dry. 2016/2017 SEVENTH GRADE VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS The Ohio Department of Health has revised the School Immunization Requirements effective January 4, 2010. All students are to receive an additional dose of Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis) vaccine BEFORE entering the seventh grade. If your child has received a Tdap vaccine within 5 years of entering the seventh grade (2012 or later), this will meet the requirement.   Additionally, beginning with the start of the 2016-2017 school year, one dose of meningococcal vaccine is required prior to entry into the 7th grade. This requirement is met if your student has had this vaccine at any time before entering 7th grade.   2016/2017 SENIOR VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS Meningococcal: Beginning with the start of the 2016-2017 school year, all pupils entering the 12th grade are required to be vaccinated against meningococcal. A second (2nd) dose of meningococcal) vaccine is required prior to entry into the 12th grade. The second (2nd) dose must be administered on or after the 16th birthday with at least eight (8) weeks between the first and second dose. If the first dose of meningococcal  vaccine was administered after the 16th birthday, a second dose is not required. If a pupil is 15 years of age or younger, only one  dose is required. Unlike some schools we do not collect dues to be part of the PTO, everyone is invited and encouraged to be part of this great organization. Everything the PTO does is done by volunteers, no one is paid to help with any of our events.  We are all parents like you, with 1 or more kids who attend the Wayne Local School District, our kids play sports and do after school activities, many of us also coach baseball, basketball, soccer, football or lead cub scouts, boy scouts or girl scout troops. We love to come together to come up with fun ideas for the students of our schools.
