Works from kindergarten to high school will be on display for all to enjoy! Waynesville Art Department S SECOND GRADE MUSIC PROGRAM On Tuesday, May 3rd, the 2nd grade students will perform their Music Program “The Bear Went Over the Mountain” at 2:45 and 7:00 pm in the Elementary Gym. Everyone is invited to come enjoy as our restless Da Bear decides he needs to expand his horizons. Da Bear and his animal friends begin a journey up the mountain in search of adventure and… “to see what he could see,” of course! The 2nd graders will also travel to Quaker Heights Care Center on Wed. May 4th to perform a shortened version of their program for the residents and visitors at 2:45. The community is welcome to attend this performance as well. This month students will be asked to pledge to be drug free and declare their full understanding of consent. Student will sign this pledge of commitment and understanding in the lobby all next week. Additionally students will get daily tips on PROM/Graduation safety during lunch. Alcohol tops the list for teens in making poor decisions when it comes to traffic accidents and engaging in non-consensual sexual activity. KEETON’S THIRD GRADE Our classroom has been a very busy place. We have become quite the Readers and Writers. In class we have been covering a wide variety of genres in our whole group reading. We’ve been working with various parallel passages and using them to write and answer questions that model the types of questions that students encountered on state testing. Practicing these types of activities in class helped the students feel more confident as they took their State ELA test this past Tuesday and Wednesday. In addition to our whole group reading, each student has been involved in a small group literature circle that has been led by our wonderful parent volunteers once a week. Students are responsible for a job to be completed independently and then discussed when their group meets during the week. Some of the novels used have been Frindle, The Whipping Boy, Chocolate Fever, and The BFG. This month students have also worked independently on a Cereal Box Report. Students were to choose a book on their reading level, that they could complete in the time given, and use a rubric to complete the different sides of a cereal box to complete a report. Students went to the computer lab to type the information for the sides of the box. Then they had to create a game, word search, or maze that was linked to their book for the back of the cereal box. The students are excited to share their finished products. They will do so in the form of a commercial. Along with their love of reading, our students are quite the mathematicians, and are always up for a challenge. Many of our students have already completed their “timed tests” and have begun working on the ones that the fourth graders currently take. Many have finished many math box challenges independently. In groups, our class will soon be “planning a day trip”. This will enable them to use the various math skills learned this year. Students will work together to figure out what they think an estimated cost for their trip will be, and then they will use websites and brochures to find attractions and costs to figure out an actual cost of the trip. They will then see how that compared to their first estimation. This should be a fun activity while reviewing many math skills from throughout the year. May is a busy Month. Our third graders will be taking a field trip to Heritage Village Museum at Sharon Woods on May 6th. Our Field Day will be on Tuesday May 10th. Then on Friday May 13th, will be our annual Wax Museum. All of our third graders will be researching a historical/famous person and will be portraying that person the afternoon of the 13th. It is an event you will not want to miss! Stacy Keeton skeeton@wayne-local.com GARAFOLO’S GREAT NEWS! 4th Grade ELA World- 4th grade students have officially completed their state testing for Reading and Language Arts. These young boys and girls were very focused and hardworking during this assessment. Now, these young learners are not through their testing window yet; they must continue their desire to learn and grow throughout the rest of our school year. Students’ math and social studies state assessments will be coming up in the beginning of May. Terms about Reading and Language Arts that we will cover one last time before year’s end are: adages, proverbs, negatives, double negatives, types of figurative language, capitalization and punctuation. Additionally, there are a handful of reading comprehension skills that students will be running through again: text and graphic features, compare and contrast, author’s purpose, and drawing conclusions. Nelson Mandela stated: Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. I believe that every last moment we have with these children this year should still be used to push and challenge them. With warm weather arising and summer fever growing, it will be our management system used to keep them focused and eager to pursue their individual learning targets. “If you’re not willing to learn, no one can help you… If you’re determined to learn… no one can stop, you! Mrs. Anna Garafolo 4th grade ELA Agarafolo@wayne-local.com 4TH GRADE MATH Our fabulous fourth graders have been mastering many math standards this school year! Our most recent topics have covered geometry including angles, parallel and perpendicular lines, identifying polygons, line and rotational symmetry, and focusing on properties of squares and rectangles. Fourth graders learned to measure angles using protractors for the first time, and were also able to explore many visuals and hands on manipulatives such as geo-boards and geo-reflectors. Students then applied their geometry knowledge by finding missing sides of rectangles and composite figures in order to calculate perimeter and area. Our current math skill is focusing on the fascinating world of tessellations. Throughout the school year, students have continued to gain strategies for solving real-life story problems and gain fluency with basic facts. The following students have been able to speed through multiplication timed tests and have the highest scores in the grade level. Sherria Rasey srasey@wayne-local.com GOOD NEWS FOR 6TH GRADE As we head to the end of the six grade year our sixth graders have so many things to look forward to doing. They have been working very hard to get ready for the state testing that began this week. They took their Language Arts tests this week and their Social Studies and Math will be next week. Please continue to help your child to prepare by giving them a good breakfast and having them get a good night’s sleep. They will be taking Social Studies on April 25th and 26th and Math on the 27th and 28th. They have been working really hard and want to do well! After we complete our testing we will be looking forward to our camp joy trip and yearly 6th grade auction! Two of the big events in sixth grade. We go to Camp Joy on May 23rd and May 24th and return for our auction on May 25th. As you are doing your spring cleaning if you come across any good items for our auction we would love to have a donation! We take almost anything you would like to donate to us. Some suggestions are gently used stuffed animals, and toys, candy, 2 liters of pop, bags of chips, and Spartan related items. Use your imagination! Students love bidding on all kinds of items. They have learned many new reading skills that will still need to be practiced over the summer to ensure retention and prevent summer reading setback. Studies have shown that children, who do not read over the summer, may lose two- three months of reading achievement. Over a six-year period, that can leave a student up to two years behind in reading achievement skills. This summer, encourage your child to READ! Reading is a great way to relax and it helps your child enter the next grade level prepared for success! Below you will find some tips to make summer reading a fun experience for your child. Keep books in the car and make sure a good book gets tucked into sports bags and backpacks. Get your child his own library card. Take your child often to browse for books and enjoy the summer reading program at The Mary L. Cook Public Library. Help your child select books on topics he/she is interested in and on their reading level. Have your child choose a page in the book (not the first one) and read it. If he/she doesn’t know five or more of the words, then the book is too hard for pleasure reading. Try to limit TV and video games. Have a variety of reading materials around the house for your child to read. Magazines, books on tape, and newspapers are all great! When traveling with your child, ask him or her to read aloud to you traffic signs, road signs, store signs, maps, billboards, words on trucks and vans, menus, and other printed information you see. Does your child want to learn about something new? Perhaps he or she would like to learn about sewing, cooking, or gardening. Find a book about it, and have your child read the instructions and then give it a try. Have your child keep a journal during summer vacation. Suggest that your child write at least two or three sentences a day about things he or she does, sees or thinks about each day. Your child can also write a letter to friends, or family telling them what they are doing during the summer to maintain the important writing skills they have developed during the school year. Play common word and language games such as Scrabble, Hang Man, Boggle, Smart Mouth, and MADLIBS. It’s a fun way to build vocabulary and strengthen language skills. A student may be considered for subject acceleration for placement in a classroom with other students who are at a higher grade level (e.g., a Kindergarten student going to a 1st grade room for math). A student may be considered for moving to a higher grade level than would normally be expected for the current year, skipping a grade in school (e.g., moving from 3rd to 5th grade over the summer or starting the year in 2nd grade, moving to 3rd grade during the year, and moving on to 4th grade after the summer). This year the Junior Class has been working diligently with as many as 20 volunteers on a regular basis! The theme this year is Lost In Wonderland and is a spin off from the movie Alice In Wonderland. The Committee has been working hard and many things will be made by hand! We will entertain students on Saturday April 30, 2016 at Waynesville High School Gymnasium. The full course dinner will be served promptly at 7:00pm and the dance will run from 8:00pm to 11:00pm. The cost of the dance is $50. Tickets will be on sale April 14th through the 22nd and the cut off is so we can give the caterer a complete head count. Students will all receive a goodie bag with some extra special items to help remember this night. We are looking forward to creating an awesome evening and memories for the Waynesville students to cherish. The hard work our girls have been putting in has definitely started to pay off in much stronger performances at the plate. In the latest overall statistics Waynesville now has 7 players with a batting average of .400, or better, with two of those players hitting over .500. Varsity has been enjoying some strong pitching performances as well, with wins this week from each of our starting pitchers, Tori Wilson(SR), Sarah Jones(JR), and Skylar Stiles(JR). Come out and join us for the Varsity game tonight, at Home, against Middletown-Madison at 5:00 pm, weather permitting. The JV softball team has also been enjoying success with 2 big wins this week, by run-rule, and solid pitching performances from Chloe Riddle and Bobbi McCoy. The second half of the season is off to a great start for both squads, which should promise for an exciting end of season run. The Waynesville Middle school boys Track had a great showing at our home Invitational this past Saturday. The boys scored in 12 of the 14th events and were led by Parker Struewing who finished first in the 100 and the 200 hurdles and third place in the high jump. Mason Shoephoerster finished third place in the discus, while Dominic Riviello and Jerry Greed finished second and sixth in the hundred dash. In the distance runs, Colin Amato finished fourth in the mile and Levi Morgan finished eighth in the 800-meter run. Brayden Dietz had an outstanding effort in the 400-meter dash and finished fifth, while Jared Greer finished sixth in the 200-meter dash. The boys relay teams all placed within their respective relays and helped earn great points to finish second overall at our home Invitational. Middle School Girls Track placed 2nd at our Waynesville Junior High Invitational last Saturday. A total of 15 schools were present at the meet, so that speaks volumes to our girls’ success and is a testimony to their hard work. Both of our 4x200 relay teams placed. Jaiden Byram, D’Laney Lezotte, Carli Brown, and Caroline Bensman secured 3rd place. Grace Moore, Kate Rohrer, Meghan Zidaroff, and Devin Phillips scored in 8th place. Eighth grader Megan Handle earned the team 22 points with 2nd place in the 100 meter dash, 3rd place in the 400 meter run, and 2nd place in the 200 meter run. Eighth grader Caroline Bensman took home a 2nd place victory in long jump with a 13’2” jump, and eighth grader Lydia Vrettos placed in both her hurdle events: 4th in 100 meter hurdles and 7th place in 200 meter hurdles. Finally, seventh grader Hannah Gill pushed for a third place victory in the mile with an impressive 6:02 minute mile! The girls are ready for their next invitational at Clinton Massie this Saturday! Waynesville Varsity Baseball were road warriors this past week, winning games at Preble Shawnee (4-0), Northridge (20-1) and Middletown Madison (6-5) to take the lead in SWBL play. Hunt Doepel had a big night Monday night as he threw a no-hitter Monday evening at Preble Shawnee. Mason Callahan had a big win versus Madison with Jake Oakes getting a huge save. The Spartan Bats return to action tonight against Middletown Madison at home beginning at 5:00 PM. They currently sit at 11-2 overall and 7-0 in SWBL play. Early lead gives the Waynesville Spartans JV victory over Miami East 10-0 The Waynesville Spartans JV jumped out to an early lead on Miami East and captured a 10-0 victory on Saturday. The game was decided quickly as the Waynesville Spartans JV exerted their will early with seven runs in the first three innings. An RBI single by Blade Roscoe, an RBI single by Jared Weaver, and a two-run double by Micah Spille in the second inning supplied the early offense for the Waynesville Spartans JV. Alex Hurley had two extra-base hits for the Waynesville Spartans JV. He doubled in the second and fourth innings. Spille baffled Miami East , striking out 11 batters. The Waynesville Spartans JV's pitcher gave up just two hits over five shutout innings. The Waynesville Spartans JV's Cameron Anderson, Jonas Boggs, Hurley and Weaver combined for seven hits and three RBIs. The Waynesville Spartans JV added three more runs in the bottom of the third. A ground out scored Boggs to get the Waynesville Spartans JV on the board in the inning. That was followed up by Anderson's single, scoring Hurley. The Waynesville Spartans JV tacked on another two runs in the fourth. A steal of home scored Anthony Carmichael for the inning's first run. That was followed up by Hurley's double, plating Boggs. JV Baseball has 11-1 victory over Preble Shawnee. The Waynesville Spartans JV jumped out to an early lead on Preble Shawnee and captured an 11-1 victory on Monday. The game was decided quickly as the Waynesville Spartans JV exerted their will early with eight runs in the first three innings. A walk by Brady Stone, an RBI single by Anthony Carmichael, and an RBI single by Jonas Boggs in the first inning and during the second inning fueled the Waynesville Spartans JV's offense early. Carmichael put himself in scoring position with two extra-base hits for the Waynesville Spartans JV. Cameron Anderson handled Preble Shawnee's lineup with ease, racking up eight strikeouts. Anderson allowed one earned run on two hits and no walks over five innings. Anderson, Carmichael and Boggs helped lead the Waynesville Spartans JV. They combined for seven hits and six RBIs.The Waynesville Spartans JV tacked on another four runs in the third. A clutch bases loaded walk scored Micah Spille to open the scoring in the frame. The Waynesville Spartans JV scored one run of their own in the fourth. The Waynesville Spartans JV scored on an RBI single by Boggs. JV beats Northridge 25-2. Eleven runs in the first three innings allowed the Waynesville Spartans JV to put the game away early. An error, a two-run double by Tyler Wells, and an RBI single by Alex Hurley in the first inning and a three-run home run by Brady Stone, a passed ball, and an RBI single by Dean Brubaker during the second inning helped the Waynesville Spartans JV put some runs on the board early. Cameron Anderson reached base four times in the game for the Waynesville Spartans JV. He scored four runs and had two RBIs. He tripled in the fourth inning. Hurley baffled Northridge , striking out eight batters. Hurley allowed one earned run on two hits and two walks over four innings. The Waynesville Spartans JV easily handled Northridge pitching as 10 hitters combined for 15 hits, 18 RBIs and 25 runs scored. The Waynesville Spartans JV scored 14 runs of their own in the fourth. The Waynesville Spartans JV scored on a passed ball, a passed ball, an RBI single by Hunter Clements, an RBI single by Wells, an RBI single by Hurley, a walk by Brubaker, a groundout by Jon Byers, a two-run triple by Anderson, an RBI single by Clements, , an error, an RBI single by Jonas Boggs, and an RBI single by Brubaker. JV Baseball wins 10-7 versus Madison. The Waynesville Spartans JV took the lead in the third inning and held on for the victory. A steal of home by Jonas Boggs gave the Waynesville Spartans JV the lead for good. It was a good day at the plate for the Waynesville Spartans JV's Ryan Lay. Lay went 3-4 and scored two runs. He tripled in the first inning and singled in the third and fifth innings. Brady Stone recorded the win for the Waynesville Spartans JV even though he allowed seven runs over six innings. Stone struck out nine, walked none and gave up 10 hits. Waynesville Spartans JV closer Micah Spille put away the final three outs to record the save. The top of the first saw Madison Senior take an early lead, 3-0. Madison Senior 's offense woke up as Jones doubled before Thompson singled, bringing home Jones. Madison Senior then tacked on more runs when Thompson scored on an RBI single by Paarlberg and Paarlberg scored on an error. It didn't take long for the Waynesville Spartans JV to answer as they scored three runs of their own in the second. The Waynesville Spartans JV scored on an RBI single by Alex Hurley, a passed ball, and an RBI double by Cameron Anderson. The Waynesville Spartans JV went up for good in the third scoring six total runs, which came home on a two-run double by Stone and three singles. A one-run sixth inning helped bring Madison Senior within three. An RBI single by Jones fueled Madison Senior 's comeback. The Waynesville Spartans JV stopped the rally after Stone got Durnil to strike out. Boys Tennis: This has been a busy week with 5 matches. Last Friday the Spartans Tennis Team defeated Franklin 4-2. On Monday we defeated a tough Fenwick team 3-2. Tuesday a Northridge conference match we defeated 5-0. On Wednesday and Thursday we lost matches vs Oakwood and Bellbrook. Other team news is the JV team who has a record of 4-3. However, in 2016, Zika Virus has also shown up locally in people who have returned from parts of the world where Zika Virus has been spreading rapidly. You can reduce your risk of being infected with mosquito-borne illness/disease by using insect repellent and wearing protective clothing to prevent mosquito bites. All students are to receive an additional dose of Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis) vaccine BEFORE entering the seventh grade. If your child has received a Tdap vaccine within 5 years of entering the seventh grade (2012 or later), this will meet the requirement. Additionally, beginning with the start of the 2016-2017 school year, one dose of meningococcal vaccine is required prior to entry into the 7th grade. This requirement is met if your student has had this vaccine at any time before entering 7th grade. 2016/2017 SENIOR VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS Meningococcal: Beginning with the start of the 2016-2017 school year, all pupils entering the 12th grade are required to be vaccinated against meningococcal. A second (2nd) dose of meningococcal) vaccine is required prior to entry into the 12th grade. The second (2nd) dose must be administered on or after the 16th birthday with at least eight (8) weeks between the first and second dose. If the first dose of meningococcal vaccine was administered after the 16th birthday, a second dose is not required. If a pupil is 15 years of age or younger, only one dose is required. Unlike some schools we do not collect dues to be part of the PTO , everyone is invited and encouraged to be part of this great organization. Everything the PTO does is done by volunteers, no one is paid to help with any of our events. We are all parents like you, with 1 or more kids who attend the Wayne local school district, our kids play sports and do after school activities, many of us also coach baseball, basketball, soccer, football or lead cub scouts, boy scouts or girl scout troops. We love to come together to come up with fun ideas for the students of our schools. We really would love to see some new parents volunteer to help at different events, it is a great way to meet others in our community!! Have you ever considered an officer position on the PTO before? This year would be a great opportunity to shadow our current officers, as many of them have served 2 consecutive terms in their current position. Our bylaws state that you can only serve 2 consecutive terms in a particular position, so several will either need to take a different position or have someone replace them.
