GOOD NEWS FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT’S OFFICE PROJECT EXCELLENCE WINNERS Each year the Area Progress Council of Warren County recognizes two Project Excellence Teachers from each school district. This year Amy Lipinski (2nd grade) and Melissa Ferguson (4th grade) were selected to represent Wayne Local Schools. View pictures. 75/71 BUSINESS HALL OF FAME The dramatic growth along Interstates 75 and 71 in Butler and Warren counties has been fueled by the efforts of both large and small businesses. The 75/71 Business Hall of Fame was created to recognize those leaders who have had a positive impact on the region through their economic, cultural and civic efforts. The Hall of Fame’s 2016 class will be recognized April 20 at a reception and dinner at the Miami Valley Gaming event center in Monroe. The event is sponsored by Taft Stettinius & Hollister, Flagel Huber Flagel and TechSolve. Congratulations to both honorees. Click for pictures. REFERRALS FOR SUBJECT & GRADE ACCELERATION All gifted students are eligible to be tested and considered for subject and grade acceleration. A student may be considered for subject acceleration for placement in a classroom with other students who are at a higher grade level (e.g., a Kindergarten student going to a 1st grade room for math). A student may be considered for moving to a higher grade level than would normally be expected for the current year, skipping a grade in school (e.g., moving from 3rd to 5th grade over the summer or starting the year in 2nd grade, moving to 3rd grade during the year, and moving on to 4th grade after the summer). Parents can contact the gifted coordinators for more information on the subject and grade acceleration policy as defined in the Wayne Board Policy Manual (Sections 5408 & 5410) or they may submit the referral form found on the gifted page of the Wayne Local Schools website. The kids have grown so much with their reading, writing, and math skills over the past two years. It is incredible to see how far they have come from second to almost-fourth grade! I have really enjoyed working with this group of students. As we wrap up the school year, students will take the state AIR tests in English Language Arts and Math. The ELA test will be April 19th-20th, and math will be April 26th and 27th. We are very eager for the students to show what they know! Parents, we appreciate your support with not scheduling appointments during testing. We are also very excited for the students to participate in the fun, academically engaging activities planned for May. Happy Spring! Marybeth Quill mquill@wayne-local.com FERGUSON’S FABULOUS FOURTH It is hard to believe spring is here and we are already into our fourth quarter of the school year! Students came back after Spring Break ready to continue learning, and we have certainly been busy in our Reading/Language Arts classroom. The big event around the corner for us is our Ohio State Reading Test for grade 4 on April 13 and 14. This is the students’ opportunity to shine and show all they have learned throughout this year. We have been busy reviewing such standards and skills as text structure, multiple meaning words, main idea and supporting details, cause and effect, figurative language, opinion writing, informative/explanatory writing, poetry, allusions to Greek mythology, point of view, affixes, and much more. I am extremely proud of each and every one of my students for their efforts each day. I would like to remind parents to please make sure your fourth grader gets to bed early next week so he/she is well-rested for testing days, and eats a nutritious breakfast each morning. Please encourage your child to do his/her best on their test. Thank you for your support in this area! In other news, we are just beginning a new novel, Shiloh, by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. This story is always a favorite of fourth grade students each year, and poses a very powerful question: Is it ever okay to lie? The main character, Marty, rescues an abused dog from a cruel owner, and must keep it hidden from the owner and his family in order to protect it. We will be having many discussions together as we read this thought-provoking story that tugs at our heartstrings. You will have to ask one of my students how it all turns out. We are also excited about our upcoming field trip on April 29 to the Cincinnati Museum Center. Any parents interested in chaperoning must be fingerprinted by the school district. We do need plenty of chaperones, so let your child’s teacher know if you are interested in going. Good luck to all fourth grade students next week on their state Reading test! SPARTAN PRIDE! Ms. Melissa Ferguson 4th Grade ELA mferguson@wayne-local.com PROM SEASON IS HERE…. This year the Junior Class has been working diligently with as many as 20 volunteers on a regular basis! The theme this year is Lost In Wonderland and is a spin off from the movie Alice In Wonderland. The Committee has been working hard and many things will be made by hand! We will entertain students on Saturday April 30, 2016 at Waynesville High School Gymnasium. The full course dinner will be served promptly at 7:00pm and the dance will run from 8:00pm to 11:00pm. The cost of the dance is $50. Tickets will be on sale April 14th through the 22nd and the cut off is so we can give the caterer a complete head count. Students will all receive a goodie bag with some extra special items to help remember this night. We are looking forward to creating an awesome evening and memories for the Waynesville students to cherish. If there are any junior dad’s that would like to help me with tear down of the gym we will start at 11:00pm and with the help of 6-10 dad’s we should be done in 2 hours or less. The camp focuses on the different career clusters and is a great for opportunity for career exploration. The students will be able to dive into hands-on high tech projects and explore how their interests fit future careers. Some of the small group rotations will focus on Advanced Technology and Robotics, Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning, Legal Office Technology Graphic Arts, Fire Science and Emergency Medical, Automotive Collision, Site Construction and Heavy Equipment, Digital Media Arts, Culinary Arts, Criminal Justice, Information Technology, and Science Technology and Engineering. Not only will students get to learn and experience these different programs for two days at the WCCC, they will also have the opportunity to visit Sinclair College in Mason, Ohio. Students will tour the campus, learn about academic programs offered, and discover ways to pay for college. Lastly, they will tour the FANUC Robotics America Corporation. This High Tech Camp is a great way for students to enjoy team building fun and meet new friends from other Warren County neighboring schools. There is also a complimentary Olive Garden camp dinner on the evening of the 9th for all campers and parents to attend. This written request is subject to approval of the school principal or designee. Bus drivers must receive notification by the school office when approval is given to a student to change to an alternate stop or bus. WELLNESS WHEN & HOW TO WASH YOUR HANDS Keeping hands clean through improved hand hygiene is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. Many diseases and conditions are spread by not washing hands with soap and clean, running water. If clean, running water is not accessible, as is common in many parts of the world, use soap and available water. If soap and water are unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol to clean hands. When should you wash your hands? Before, during, and after preparing food Before eating food Before and after caring for someone who is sick Before and after treating a cut or wound After using the toilet After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste After handling pet food or pet treats After touching garbage How should you wash your hands? Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the "Happy Birthday" song from beginning to end twice. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them. What should you do if you don’t have soap and clean, running water? Washing hands with soap and water is the best way to reduce the number of germs on them in most situations. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers can quickly reduce the number of germs on hands in some situations, but sanitizers do not eliminate all types of germs. Hand sanitizers are not as effective when hands are visibly dirty or greasy. How do you use hand sanitizers? Apply the product to the palm of one hand (read the label to learn the correct amount). Rub your hands together. Rub the product over all surfaces of your hands and fingers until your hands are dry. 2016/2017 SEVENTH GRADE VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS The Ohio Department of Health has revised the School Immunization Requirements effective January 4, 2010. All students are to receive an additional dose of Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis) vaccine BEFORE entering the seventh grade. If your child has received a Tdap vaccine within 5 years of entering the seventh grade (2012 or later), this will meet the requirement. Additionally, beginning with the start of the 2016-2017 school year, one dose of meningococcal vaccine is required prior to entry into the 7th grade. This requirement is met if your student has had this vaccine at any time before entering 7th grade. 2016/2017 SENIOR VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS Meningococcal: Beginning with the start of the 2016-2017 school year, all pupils entering the 12th grade are required to be vaccinated against meningococcal. A second (2nd) dose of meningococcal) vaccine is required prior to entry into the 12th grade. The second (2nd) dose must be administered on or after the 16th birthday with at least eight (8) weeks between the first and second dose. If the first dose of meningococcal vaccine was administered after the 16th birthday, a second dose is not required. If a pupil is 15 years of age or younger, only one dose is required.
