GOOD NEWS FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT’S OFFICE First Day for Students Grades 1-12 – Monday, August 22 First Day for Kindergarten and Preschool – Thursday, August 25 ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL HOMEROOM LISTS Class/Homeroom lists will be posted by noon on August 15th. For grades 3,4 and 5 parents may pick up “schedules” for students which will show in detail how their child’s school day will go. WHS OPEN HOUSE set for August 17th for ALL High School Students 6 pm – 8 pm On August 17th, we are going to have an OPEN HOUSE for ALL high school students. Open house will be from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm and you may bring your child in at any time during this time frame. During this time you will have the opportunity to do the following: · Emergency Medical Forms, Student Handbook, Free and Reduced Lunch, Bus Routes: Parent’s please bring information with you so you can fill out all emergency medical forms. · Schedules: All students will get their schedule, locker and will have the opportunity to visit classroom teachers. · Class Rings: Graduate Services will be here to answer any questions about ordering your class ring. · Senior Information: Graduate services will be here to answer any questions in regards to graduation. IMPORTANT PARENT/STUDENT MEETINGS This year we have added two informational meetings to help parents understand graduation requirements/testing and taking College Credit Plus courses in 2016-17. Both meetings will take place in the high school gym. 7:00 pm Graduation/Testing Requirements for the class of 2018 and beyond 7:30 pm College Credit Plus – Expectations and Procedures for 2016-17 If for some reason you cannot attend this event, you may stop by the office after August 17th or we will send everything home on the first day of school. Families larger than 4 can include additional immediate family members for $25 each. At the admission gate, your name will appear on a pass list allowing you to sign-in to each event. Adult and Student individual admission prices for league games are: $6 - high school football and basketball games $5 - other high school sports games $4 - middle school games The Waynesville Athletic Department hosts approximately 90 ticketed home events annually. As you can see, the season pass is a real bargain; a family of 4 attending as few as 9 home events would begin saving money. Someone could be hurt, injured, or even pushed out into traffic. Students waiting for the school bus in an orderly manner are a safety expectation and a part of Spartan Pride Community Wide. WELLNESS WC Combined Health District Newsletter – May 2016 Worried About Mosquitoes? Follow these steps to help prevent mosquito bites: Wear Insect Repellent. Yes! It is safe. When used as directed, insect repellent is the BEST way to protect yourself from mosquito bites – even children and pregnant women should protect themselves. Higher percentages of active ingredient provide longer lasting protection. Cover Up. When weather permits, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants. Keep Mosquitoes Outside. Use air conditioning or make sure that you repair and use window/door screens. For more information on mosquito bite prevention or the latest Zika Virus information visit www.cdc.gov SUN SAFETY With the warmer weather it’s important to remember to protect our skin. Here are some tips to keep in mind. Seek the shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM. Do not burn. Avoid tanning and UV tanning beds. Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses. Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating. Keep newborns out of the sun. Sunscreens should be used on babies over the age of six months. Examine your skin head-to-toe every month. See your physician every year for a professional skin exam. ABCD’s of Melanoma A - Asymmetrical Shape Melanoma lesions are often irregular, or not symmetrical, in shape. Benign moles are usually symmetrical. B - Border Typically, non-cancerous moles have smooth, even borders. Melanoma lesions usually have irregular borders that are difficult to define. C – Color The presence of more than one color (blue, black, brown, tan, etc.) or the uneven distribution of color can sometimes be a warning sign of melanoma. Benign moles are usually a single shade of brown or tan. D – Diameter Melanoma lesions are often greater than 6 millimeters in diameter (approximately the size of a pencil eraser). Jennifer Royalty jroyalty@wayne-local.com Wayne Local School Nurse 2016/2017 SEVENTH GRADE VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS The Ohio Department of Health has revised the School Immunization Requirements effective January 4, 2010. All students are to receive an additional dose of Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis) vaccine BEFORE entering the seventh grade. If your child has received a Tdap vaccine within 5 years of entering the seventh grade (2012 or later), this will meet the requirement. Additionally, beginning with the start of the 2016-2017 school year, one dose of meningococcal vaccine is required prior to entry into the 7th grade. This requirement is met if your student has had this vaccine at any time before entering 7th grade. 2016/2017 SENIOR VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS Meningococcal: Beginning with the start of the 2016-2017 school year, all pupils entering the 12th grade are required to be vaccinated against meningococcal. A second (2nd) dose of meningococcal) vaccine is required prior to entry into the 12th grade. The second (2nd) dose must be administered on or after the 16th birthday with at least eight (8) weeks between the first and second dose. If the first dose of meningococcal vaccine was administered after the 16th birthday, a second dose is not required. If a pupil is 15 years of age or younger, only one dose is required.
