THIRD GRADE NEWS   Our classroom continues to be a very busy place.  We continue to grow in our reading, writing, and math skills.   We have been reading a lot about the old west.  One selection that we read was about cowboys on the cattle drive.  Next, we read a historical fiction selection about a boom town. Then, we read another historical fiction that took place in the depression era during the dust bowl.  We enjoyed learning about the past trough characters.  Reading these selections also made us thankful for what we have and the way that we live.  To conclude this unit we read a play titled The Crowded House.  The students enjoyed reading the different parts in the play.    In writing we have been developing mood through our words.  The students wrote cinquain poems about their favorite holiday or celebration.  We have also been writing opinion pieces in response to literature.   Our math studies have been on geometry.  We have studied lines, angles, polygons, and area.  We will be designing our own dream houses in which we will find the area and perimeter.    Heidi Berardinis hberardinis@wayne-local.com THE ELEMENTARY LITERACY LAB   Often times, parents ask the teachers how they can help their child decode unknown words. Here are a several strategies that may help your child determine that unknown word.               Did I look at the picture for clues?             Can I skip the word and read the rest of the sentence and then go back and read it again correctly?             Can I sound out the word?             Do I recognize any hunks and chunks, word parts, or smaller words in the word?             Did I stretch the word out slowly to put the sounds together?             Am I pronouncing it correctly?  The reader may know the word if he/she hears it.             Do I know a similar word?  New words can remind the reader of a word he/she already knows.             Are there clues in the text? Using context text clues may help determine word and word meaning.             Does it look right? The beginning sounds should match the beginning letters of the unknown word.             Does it sound right?             Does it make sense? Reread the sentence and ask if it makes sense.   Reading biographies is important for three reasons. First, children are reading more nonfiction books at school. Reading picture biographies is a great way to start with young readers. Secondly, when reading biographies, the reader is learning about real historical people. Finally, the biographies usually tell about people who have overcome obstacles or made an important impact in the world.   Whether it is fiction, nonfiction, or poetry, it is important to discuss the book your child is reading. This will show the child that you are interested in what he/she is reading and learning. You might ask about characters, setting, problem, and solutions, what character traits do the characters have or how the character felt. Encourage your child to explain why he/she answered the way he/she did.   Here are a few educational apps for children.            Sight Word Ninja Vocabulary Spelling City Phonics Genius Spell Mania Reading Comprehension News-o-Matic Daily Newspaper Just for Kids   Enjoy reading!   Ms. Durham Literacy Lab jdurham@wayne-local.com GOOD NEWS FROM THE FRENCH ROOM!   As spring approaches, the French One class is continuing their study of French vocabulary and basic expressions.  They are currently learning how to discuss where they are going and what is going to happen in the near future.  Also in this chapter they will begin using some basic verbs to say what they are doing.  This is very exciting for them as they begin to create their own simple sentences entirely in French.  I look forward to watching them continue the learning process next year in French Two.   Students in French Two are learning how to express themselves in the past using the Passé Compose and the Imparfait.  We are currently reading the authentic French version of Sleeping Beauty entitled, “The Beauty in the Sleeping Forest,” in order to see how these two verb tenses are used together to express events in the past. The class is currently conducted in a mixture of French and English with the goal being to transition to all or at least mostly French by the beginning of next year. As I tell the students, “You’ll never learn to speak French if you don’t speak in French!”   Speaking of next year I am very excited to announce that we will once again be offering French III at WHS!  It is during French III that I see the greatest gains in language usage and comprehension.  If you want to ensure that your student is ready for foreign language study in college, then you really should encourage them to continue their study of French to French III and beyond.  Many colleges and universities require at least two years study of the same foreign language (one year of Spanish and one year of French doesn’t count!) for admission.  However, if your child is hoping to be considered for a scholarship, additional foreign language study or, the addition of a second foreign language, could be one of the factors that sets him/her apart from the rest of the applicants.    If you have any questions or concerns about you child, please do not hesitate to contact me at epardon@wayne-local.com.   Elizabeth Pardon SAVE THE DATE   WHS Spring Musical  April 15-17 & April 22-23 More info to follow. HIGH TECH CAREER CAMP   -  Open to the Class of 2021 -   June 7-9, 2016  9:00 a.m.- 4:15 p.m.      Career Exploration -  Sinclair College -  FANUC Robotics   The High Tech Career Camp is facilitated by the Warren County Career Center. The camp focuses on the different career clusters and is a great for opportunity for career exploration. The students will be able to dive into hands-on high tech projects and explore how their interests fit future careers. Some of the small group rotations will focus on Advanced Technology and Robotics, Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning, Legal Office Technology Graphic Arts, Fire Science and Emergency Medical, Automotive Collision, Site Construction and Heavy Equipment, Digital Media Arts, Culinary Arts, Criminal Justice, Information Technology, and Science Technology and Engineering.   Not only will students get to learn and experience these different programs for two days at the WCCC, they will also have the opportunity to visit Sinclair College in Mason, Ohio.  Students will tour the campus, learn about academic programs offered, and discover ways to pay for college. Lastly, they will tour the FANUC Robotics America Corporation.   This High Tech Camp is a great way for students to enjoy team building fun and meet new friends from other Warren County neighboring schools.  There is also a complimentary Olive Garden camp dinner on the evening of the 9th for all campers and parents to attend.    In addition, and new this year, an optional JOBSHADOWING opportunity will be offered on June 10th (Friday) at the Atrium Hospital for a variety of career fields.    Current Seventh Graders will be bringing this flyer home bring home on April 4th. Therefore, if you have a 4th through 11th grader in your household, please consider letting them enter the 2016 Ohio Mathematics Contest, which is being hosted by Wright State University Department of Mathematics and Statistics. There will be prizes for the top three entrants in each grade and scholarships will be awarded to the top three entrants in grades 9, 10 and 11. Don’t miss this great opportunity!   The purpose of the contest is to stimulate interest in mathematics and physics among upper elementary, middle, and high school students and to recognize those who exhibit exceptional talents in mathematical skills. The organizers and sponsors ask teachers and parents to strongly encourage their students and children in grades 4 through 11 to enter this contest.   The contest is part of the annual KSEA National Science and Mathematics Contest and entrants may participate in mathematics, high school physics or both. Go to http://whsguidance.weebly.com/remind-messaging-system-sign-up.html   for more information.   COLLEGE CREDIT PLUS   College Credit Plus (CCP) gives students the opportunity to take college courses and receive college credit while still on the campus of Wayne Local Schools.  All public school districts must allow college-ready students in grades 7-12 who qualify for college admission to have the opportunity to participate in this new program.    Wayne Local Schools are very proud to have partnered with Sinclair Community College and will be working together to offer the best opportunities for our students.  Students are not required to select Sinclair Community College and can choose other post-secondary opportunities.  It is the student’s responsibility to complete all registration and application policies established at each university or college.   April 1st is the deadline for students to submit to Waynesville High School the Student Letter of Intent to Participate in College Credit Plus form. Waynesville Baseball had another couple of successful scrimmages at Monroe and Stebbins High Schools this week. The Spartan Bats open up season play at home on Saturday, March 26 at 1:00 PM versus Kenton Ridge High School. They will follow up opening day with games versus Greeneview, at Clinton Massie, at Deer Park, at Dixie, and at Badin High Schools over the Spring Break week. Go Spartans!   S partan Tennis The tennis season for boys started March 7th with players working 6 days a week to prepare for our opening match on April 4th verses Alter. This year we have added a Junior Varsity team. Max Gabbard is our new JV coach and will be leading our JV squad through an 11 match season. This provides a great way to build our teams for the future and gives JV players much needed live match experience. The Varsity team features six seniors returning some of them for their 4th year of tennis.  Head Coach Gary Hardman is looking forward to an epic season and invites fans to come and watch great tennis matches.   We do still have openings on our JV team so if you know of any guy from 9th to 12th grade who wants to learn the game that you can play your whole life, have him contact Coach Hardman at 937-902-3123. Crossing four or more traffic lanes or a divided roadway is prohibited. WELLNESS BE GOOD TO YOUR KNEES   Although it’s not always possible to prevent knee pain, here are a few ways to be nice to your knees, so you’ll be walking tall for years to come: Wear low shoes with cushioning and support.  Women should stick to wide heels no higher than 1.5 inches.  Walking in two-inch heels increases knee strain by 23 percent (compared to walking barefoot).  The higher the heel, the greater the strain. Warm up before exercising.  It allows synovial fluid into your joints to prevent friction. Stay active with low-impact activities that build stamina, strength, and flexibility, such as yoga, walking, biking, swimming, and weight lifting. Every extra pound of weight puts up to four extra pounds of pressure on your knees. Take dietary supplements such as fish oil, which has anti-inflammatory effects on your joints.  Glucosamine can also help keep your bones and joints healthy and strong. Try glute exercises to improve your hip function.  Your hips can absorb more impact and reduce the stress on your knees. Strengthen your core muscles.  This can keep your back in a neutral spine position and place the lower extremities (especially the knees) in the best position for movement.  FLU SEASON   Flu season up until this point has been relatively mild, but flu activity is predicted to increase over the coming weeks.  The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.   Flu symptoms: Fever or feeling feverish/chills; Cough; Sore Throat; Runny or Stuffy Nose; Muscle or body aches; Headaches; Fatigue   Flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby.   You may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick. Most healthy adults may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5 to 7 days after becoming sick.  If your child is diagnosed with flu they should remain home until symptoms are gone and the child is without fever for 24 hours.   Jen Royalty, RN, BSN Wayne Local School Nurse jroyalty@wayne-local.com 2016/2017 SEVENTH GRADE VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS The Ohio Department of Health has revised the School Immunization Requirements effective January 4, 2010. All students are to receive an additional dose of Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis) vaccine BEFORE entering the seventh grade. If your child has received a Tdap vaccine within 5 years of entering the seventh grade (2012 or later), this will meet the requirement.   Additionally, beginning with the start of the 2016-2017 school year, one dose of meningococcal vaccine is required prior to entry into the 7th grade. This requirement is met if your student has had this vaccine at any time before entering 7th grade.   2016/2017 SENIOR VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS Meningococcal: Beginning with the start of the 2016-2017 school year, all pupils entering the 12th grade are required to be vaccinated against meningococcal. A second (2nd) dose of meningococcal) vaccine is required prior to entry into the 12th grade. The second (2nd) dose must be administered on or after the 16th birthday with at least eight (8) weeks between the first and second dose. If the first dose of meningococcal  vaccine was administered after the 16th birthday, a second dose is not required. If a pupil is 15 years of age or younger, only one  dose is required. What a fabulous turn out, who knew so many people like to get their skate on!!  We will definitely be hosting this fun event again, maybe even twice next year.  We will try to get the facility longer next time. Thank you again to everyone who came out.   The creativity was AMAZING!! You looked upon a gym filled with a sea of fantastic creativity and ideas... the CARDBOARD CHALLENGE on March 9th was a huge success. I was absolutely amazed by all the creative ideas and projects that students of all grade levels (preschool -12 grade) made. We had a  kinderbot, pool table, skeeball, plinko, , an xbox, donkey kong arcade game, a kitchen, a car, log cabin, air hockey, a replica of Mrs. Keeeton's classroom, penny toss, ring toss, an airport, millennium falcon, waterfall, rocket ship, harry potter goblet, a tunnel maze, shopkins mall, pieces of art, and so much more!! Our GRAND PRIZE winner of $100  was Miss Kate Handle, a 6th grade student, who made a fantastic replica of a kitchen -with a sink with bubbles and water, a kitchen aid mixer, cheese grater, cookie jar and so much more WOWSIER! We had at least one 1st place winner from each grade level winning a $20 prize, we had so many great creations that many grade levels had ties so we had  multiple 1st place winners. We also awarded prizes to 2nd and 3rd place winners from each grade level! I can tell you the judges had the hardest job that night and we are very grateful to those adults who came out and judged ! Thank you to the NHS students who helped with setup and judging.   Thank you to all the students who participated, can't wait to see what you create next year. HUGE thank to all the parents who support their kids in this event ..... not only are kids being encouraged to recycle but they are also using science, math, technology and engineering skills to build  and create. Thank you to our sponsors WCWM and Rumpke, LCNB who made monetary donations this year,  which allowed us to offer cash prizes to participants.  Also thank you to all the companies that donated tickets and prizes to award to our 2nd & 3rd place winners. Unlike some schools we do not collect dues to be part of the PTO, everyone is invited and encouraged to be part of this great organization. Everything the PTO does is done by volunteers, no one is paid to help with any of our events.  We are all parents like you, with 1 or more kids who attend the Wayne Local School District, our kids play sports and do after school activities, many of us also coach baseball, basketball, soccer, football or lead cub scouts, boy scouts or girl scout troops. This club is a group of Waynesville-area women who are dedicated to strengthening our community through service, philanthropy and education. Members raise funds to distribute to local nonprofit charities and to offer educational scholarships.  Members also contribute their time and talent in support of other community needs.      Any graduating high school senior residing in the Wayne Local School District may apply for a Progressive Women’s Club Scholarship.
