GOOD NEWS FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT’S OFFICE Last School Day for Students Wednesday, May 25. We will have a district wide 2 Hour Early Release. PLAN “B” – TWO HOUR EARLY RELEASE SCHEDULE Kindergarten & Preschool Wayne Local will refer to a 2 hour early childhood early release schedule as Plan “B” Kindergarten and Preschool. Plan “B” A.M. Half-Day Kindergarten and preschool will begin at the regular scheduled time and remain in school for two hours. These students will leave school one-hour earlier than usual. School transportation will pick up your child at regular time and bring your child home one hour earlier than normal. Plan “B” P.M. Half-Day Kindergarten and Preschool will begin one (1) hour early and remain at school for two hours, dismissing two (2) hours early. School transportation will pick your child up one hour earlier than normal. Your child will be delivered home two (2) hours early. Plan “B” Full-Day Kindergarten will start at regular time and be dismissed two (2) hours early. School transportation will pick your child up at normal time and deliver them home two hours early. WHS BAND PRESENTS THE 12th ANNUAL JAZZ DINNER Mark your calendars for Friday, May 20th as the Waynesville Band transforms the Middle School gym into a jazz hall for the 12th Annual Jazz Dinner! Come sample the musical delicacies performed by Spartan Steel and the WHS Jazz Band! The doors open at 6:00pm and dinner is served at 6:30pm. Your taste buds will marvel at the delicious pulled pork, green beans, rolls, and cake that are provided by Davidson’s Meat Processing! While you are savoring the feast for your appetite, Spartan Steel will delight your senses with a combination of traditional soca, reggae, and popular favorites. The WHS Jazz Band continues the sensory treat with a collection of big band and classic rock favorites. It’s as delicious to your ears as it is to your tummy! We will be holding a silent auction during the festivities again this year! Bid on fabulous items from local businesses – there’s something for everyone! You may order tickets from any band member or by contacting Ms. Schleman at 897-4706, ext. 3117 or lschleman@wayne-local.com GRADUATION FROM TRANSITIONAL LIVING PROGRAM The Transitional Living Classroom serves students who have met the requirements for high school graduation but who will benefit from additional support to learn independent living skills. Housed at Quaker Heights Care Community; the program is a joint venture between Warren County educational entities and a number of business partners. Waynesville had two graduates Wednesday, May 18; Congratulations Thomas Turner and Karynne Durham! COMMUNITY CALENDAR SALE Once again the Waynesville Band Program is selling Community Calendars for the 2016-2017 school year. The band has been selling these calendars for over 50 years! These 12 month flip calendars are in full color and feature photos of many school and community groups. The calendar runs from September through August, and contains important dates for the community such as village meetings, sporting events, school board meetings, etc. The best part is that YOU can add your own listings: birthdays, anniversaries, meetings and memoriam. Calendars are $8.00 each, and if you would like to add a listing it is $1.00 for each event. So, for example, if you order two calendars and would like to add two birthday listings, the total cost would be $18.00 ($16.00 for the calendars and $2.00 for the listings). Please see any band member to order yours – students also went door to door on May 7th. You can fill out the “Sorry We Missed You” order form and send it to school! They have learned many new reading skills that will still need to be practiced over the summer to ensure retention and prevent summer reading setback. Studies have shown that children, who do not read over the summer, may lose two- three months of reading achievement. Over a six-year period, that can leave a student up to two years behind in reading achievement skills. This summer, encourage your child to READ! Reading is a great way to relax and it helps your child enter the next grade level prepared for success! Below you will find some tips to make summer reading a fun experience for your child. Keep books in the car and make sure a good book gets tucked into sports bags and backpacks. Get your child his own library card. Take your child often to browse for books and enjoy the summer reading program at The Mary L. Cook Public Library. Help your child select books on topics he/she is interested in and on their reading level. Have your child choose a page in the book (not the first one) and read it. If he/she doesn’t know five or more of the words, then the book is too hard for pleasure reading. Try to limit TV and video games. Have a variety of reading materials around the house for your child to read. Magazines, books on tape, and newspapers are all great! When traveling with your child, ask him or her to read aloud to you traffic signs, road signs, store signs, maps, billboards, words on trucks and vans, menus, and other printed information you see. Does your child want to learn about something new? Perhaps he or she would like to learn about sewing, cooking, or gardening. Find a book about it, and have your child read the instructions and then give it a try. Have your child keep a journal during summer vacation. Suggest that your child write at least two or three sentences a day about things he or she does, sees or thinks about each day. Your child can also write a letter to friends, or family telling them what they are doing during the summer to maintain the important writing skills they have developed during the school year. Play common word and language games such as Scrabble, Hang Man, Boggle, Smart Mouth, and MADLIBS. It’s a fun way to build vocabulary and strengthen language skills. This is a great opportunity for Waynesville students to explore the Health Care Profession. A few students from Waynesville did attend last year and they loved it. All great feedback. This year's HealthPath Summer Camp will take place July 27 through 29, 2016. It's targeted to students who are from Adams, Brown, Warren and Clermont counties, or other rural communities in Ohio. Students will be given the opportunity to experience what it is like to be a health professions college student, where they will participate in college-level courses, simulated patient cases, and inter-professional teamwork. Students will also learn about unfamiliar careers in primary care, as well have the chance to meet with primary care providers and current health profession students at the University of Cincinnati. Participants will be exposed to programs within the Academic Health Center, including College of Medicine, College of Nursing, College of Allied Health Sciences and College of Pharmacy. Additionally, camp participants will receive information on college readiness, and guidance on what courses to take in high school, standardized test prep, and financial aid. Transportation is provided to our HealthPath Summer Camp, and there is no fee associated with this program. The Waynesville Varsity Baseball team (23-3) won its 2nd straight sectional title, this time defeating Clinton Massie 12-1 in the Division II sectional final at Monroe High School on Thursday, May 19th. The Spartan Bats will play on Saturday, May 21st at 12:00 PM against Archbishop McNicholas at Mason High School for the District Championship. Come out and support your Spartan Baseball team! Varsity Softball wrapped up a very successful season this week with a heartbreaking loss to Dixie in the Sectional Final game. After compiling tournament wins against Preble Shawnee and Brookville the Lady Spartans battled for 8 innings with Dixie, but came up short in the end. We would sincerely like to thank all of those who came out to support our girls, and we hope to see you all back out to cheer us on again in the Spring. We would also like to wish our Senior players Tori Wilson, Emily Wells, Kami Purkey, and Chloe Riddle all the best as they complete their High School experience and move into the next phase of their lives. Someone could be hurt, injured, or even pushed out into traffic. Students waiting for the school bus in an orderly manner are a safety expectation and a part of Spartan Pride Community Wide. WELLNESS SUN SAFETY With the warmer weather it’s important to remember to protect our skin. Here are some tips to keep in mind. Seek the shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM. Do not burn. Avoid tanning and UV tanning beds. Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses. Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating. Keep newborns out of the sun. Sunscreens should be used on babies over the age of six months. Examine your skin head-to-toe every month. See your physician every year for a professional skin exam. ABCD’s of Melanoma A - Asymmetrical Shape Melanoma lesions are often irregular, or not symmetrical, in shape. Benign moles are usually symmetrical. B - Border Typically, non-cancerous moles have smooth, even borders. Melanoma lesions usually have irregular borders that are difficult to define. C – Color The presence of more than one color (blue, black, brown, tan, etc.) or the uneven distribution of color can sometimes be a warning sign of melanoma. Benign moles are usually a single shade of brown or tan. D – Diameter Melanoma lesions are often greater than 6 millimeters in diameter (approximately the size of a pencil eraser). Jennifer Royalty jroyalty@wayne-local.com Wayne Local School Nurse 2016/2017 SEVENTH GRADE VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS The Ohio Department of Health has revised the School Immunization Requirements effective January 4, 2010. All students are to receive an additional dose of Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis) vaccine BEFORE entering the seventh grade. If your child has received a Tdap vaccine within 5 years of entering the seventh grade (2012 or later), this will meet the requirement. Additionally, beginning with the start of the 2016-2017 school year, one dose of meningococcal vaccine is required prior to entry into the 7th grade. This requirement is met if your student has had this vaccine at any time before entering 7th grade. 2016/2017 SENIOR VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS Meningococcal: Beginning with the start of the 2016-2017 school year, all pupils entering the 12th grade are required to be vaccinated against meningococcal. A second (2nd) dose of meningococcal) vaccine is required prior to entry into the 12th grade. The second (2nd) dose must be administered on or after the 16th birthday with at least eight (8) weeks between the first and second dose. If the first dose of meningococcal vaccine was administered after the 16th birthday, a second dose is not required. If a pupil is 15 years of age or younger, only one dose is required. JOIN US…6TH ANNUAL WAYNESVILLE ALUMNI BOYS/GIRLS BASKETBALL BENEFIT GAME FOR CLAYTON DANIELS FAMILY - Sat. May 21 Their Story: Clayton has a congenital heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot with Pulmonary Atresia and MAPCAs. In layman’s terms, little Clay has a hole in his heart, no pulmonary artery connecting the heart to the branch pulmonary arteries and his branch pulmonary arteries were very small – only 1 mm in size. Clayton has already had one open heart surgery and had his first two cardiac catheterization procedures. The first was shortly after he arrived at Cincinnati Children’s to make sure there were no issues with the heart repair from the open heart procedure. The second was a few weeks later. During this procedure, the doctors were able to start ballooning his branch pulmonary arteries and making them bigger. His arteries went from just 1mm to 2mm. While this doesn’t seem like a big deal, it made a huge different in his oxygen levels. The day before Easter, Clayton had two major deoxygenation spells. After being admitted into Cincinnati Children's, he received a blood transfusion and he perked right back up. A third cardiac catheterization procedure was performed and the doctors were able to balloon his arteries from 2mm to 4mm. 4mm is the size of a “normal” baby’s arteries at birth. Today, Clayton is making great progress. He will be continuing to do cardiac catheterization procedures every 6-8 weeks until his second open heart procedure in July at Stanford Children’s Hospital. The next few years will be filled with catheterization procedures and a few more open heart surgeries. Clayton has a long road ahead of him, but with lots of love and prayers, he will continue to fight and grow. Why Do We Need You?
