GOOD NEWS FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT’S OFFICE THANKSGIVING BREAK NOVEMBER 23-25, 2016 Enjoy and have a safe holiday. K-5TH GRADE RESOURCE ROOM FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION   This year is off to a fantastic start! The students are excited about learning and ready to take on new endeavors! In special education, there must be unique hands on learning that has real-life meaningful experiences for each student. Leaning is individualized and geared towards making them successful in a way they like, and can learn. This year we have focused on problem solving, self-regulation, and being a team player. Students are encouraged to help each other, help monitor their own behavior, out and oversee their own schedule. Giving students choices and being a student-led classroom has allowed the students in the resource room to blossom.   Our thematic units have included, all about me and why I am unique, personal hygiene, seasons of the year, weather, planets, winter animals and hibernation, voting and elections, self-regulation and being able to handle difficult situations. In math students, have been working with fractions, displaying their knowledge with a calculator for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, graphing and charts, working with money and being a responsible employee in the community, and problem solving strategies during real-life word problems. In English language arts, students have been learning how to use strategies based on “Reciprocal Teaching”, which is a research based program.  While reading, students use text features in non-fiction books to help gain a better understanding of what they are reading. Reading strategies such as underlining questions, matching words to assist with answers, using photographs and captions to gain a better understanding of the book, utilizing the glossary, index, and table of contents, and making predations while asking and answering literal questions such as who, where, what, when, and why.   Last month we celebrated and raised awareness and celebrated in the elementary building for people who have Spina Bifida and Down syndrome, we also wore blue and yellow. You can learn more about disability awareness by going to the following link https://www.disabled-world.com/ The Alternative Assessment for students with disabilities in grades 3rd-5th, is right around the corner. We will start testing as early as February. To find out information on the Ohio Extended Content Standards and the Alternative Assessment for students with disabilities you can visit education.ohio.gov. Under the special education section, you will find more details about your child's learning.     Technology in our classroom is used daily and students are engaged while they are learning. Our students have access to ipads, touch screen computers, and android. Students often type their work on computers due to being faster and legibility. Students with special needs can benefit from some of the following websites which can be used at home and school www.mobymax.com  www.storyonline.com www.pbskids.com www.starfall.com www.abcmouse.com       Heather Kerns B.S, M.Ed, Ed.D   Waynesville Elementary, Room 111 K-5th grade Intervention Specialist  hkerns@wayne-local.com MRS. BEARDINIS' THIRD GRADE BUNCH   In reading class we have been reading a biography about Thomas Edison.   We have Thomas Edison to thank for the groundwork that eventually brought us movies.   As a paired text reading we also learned a little bit about movie making. The students were excited to learn about how movie makers make superheroes fly.  They were warned to not try that at home.  They were also fascinated with how movies that appear to be outside are actually filmed in an inside studio.  I see a few George Lucas' in Waynesville's future.   We have now moved onto a non-fiction selection about Technology.  This selection is also of high interest to the students, because it is looking at the use of technology in the sports arena.  We have enjoyed many creative writings and discussions about what the possibilities of technology are in the future.   A big thank you to the parents who were able to come in and help the students edit their writing.  They have published an opinion piece.  The students expressed a lot of strong opinion about such topics as: wearing uniforms to school, having pets in our classroom, state testing, and having more recess.     As we move into December the students will be preparing for their music program which is on December 13.   Mrs. Heidi Berardinis hberardinis@wayne-local.com PTO SPIRIT WEAR FUNDRAISER The PTO is partnering with The Spirit of Waynesville for the 2016 spirit wear fundraiser. AUTHOR VISIT WITH JERRY PALLOTTA   On December 14, author Jerry Pallotta will visit Waynesville Elementary. Jerry is an award-winning author of children’s alphabet books. He combines interesting facts, detailed research, humor, and realistic illustrations that children love. Jerry’s first book called, Ocean Alphabet set the path for him. He has since written 30 nonfiction alphabet titles that includes Icky Bug Alphabet, Airplane Alphabet, Flower Alphabet and Eyeball Alphabet.    Jerry also brings nonfiction subjects to the field of elementary math in a beautifully illustrated format. His math literacy books count from zero to zillions, in titles such as Underwater Counting Even Numbers, Underwater Counting Odd Numbers, Count to a Million, and Icky Bug Numbers.    Jerry’s newest series, Who Would Win?, are fact filled non-fiction books comparing two rivals.  These books are attracting the most reluctant readers! Many of these titles are on the pre- order form.    In his presentations, Jerry discusses writing, researching, working with illustrators, designing, editing and publishing his books.  We are excited to have him come from Massachusetts to speak to our students! We appreciate the B.A.T.S (Bringing Authors to Schools) Organization for helping make this visit possible, and the support of Wayne Local Schools.   Please look for the Pre-order form that came home this week.  Pre-ordering is best so your child can be assured to get the title they want.  Books will be displayed in the Media Center.  All pre-orders are due by November 30, and checks should be made payable to Books ‘N’ More.   Lora Schafer Rainbow Reading Teacher lschafer@wayne-local.com ART CLUB OUTREACH! EMPTY BOWLS   Student in art club have started their first Annual Empty Bowls outreach, what is Empty Bowls? It is a fundraiser for our art program here at the school and to help fight hunger! Handmade bowls will be sold (with food in them) January 21st at three basketball games to raise funds. A donation will be made investing back into our community to fight hunger. For example to a local food pantry or the Food to Go program we have here at the school could be a beneficiary of the student's choosing to direct the funds.    Students and staff have been coming into the art room for the past month to build/throw and glaze ceramic bowls. We have a goal of 100 bowls and would love to have anyone who is willing to come in and help. Someone from the art department will be after school every Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday to facilitate and help you get involved. It may be that you glaze a bowl that is made or even prep for throwing on the wheel, every bit counts and helps us reach our goal. No role is too small!   We had the high school and middle school student council come in this week and made 13 bowls and glazed 10 in one setting!! It was a great turn out. Thanks Student Council!!    We look forward to seeing even more students and staff get involved in the creative process. And then for everyone to come out on the 21st when we bring out all the hard work!    See you soon! The Art Department Bethany Lamb   blamb@wayne-local.com CHRISTMAS CLUB:   The Christmas Club was started last year as a community service or community outreach opportunity for our young learners. This year, the club is made up of 4th grade students. The club is meeting on Thursday after school from 3:35-4:35;  Dec. 1st, and Dec. 8th. The club goal is to allow students to gather and meet with one another, learn a ‘timeless craft project’, and experience ‘giving’. The students will be making Christmas Care Packages, and decorating table top Christmas Trees to donate to the residents of Quaker Heights. Through generous donations of students’ families, staff and friends we hope to be able to make plenty of presents for these wonderful residents.  We look forward to working with these students, and helping them see the ‘Joy’ of giving. During meeting times, we will enjoy Holiday songs, classical movies, create care packages and decorate small trees to hand deliver to our Quaker Heights residents.   Anna Garafolo -agarafolo@wayne-local.com ; Janelle Gaver- jgaver@wayne-local.com ; Ashten Swank-  aswank@wayne-local.com   ART ROOM NEWS Art Club: Middle school: Students are working on projects at each meeting! These rules are for your own safety.   INFORMATION ABOUT SCHOOL CLOSING FOR INCLEMENT WEATHER   As we head into winter it is very important for parents to have back up plans in place for delays, early dismissals and closures.   We understand that our decision to open or close schools in bad weather has a big effect on families. We also understand that our students are better served by being in school. As always, our top priority is the safety of our students.  We will always try to make our decisions as early as possible.  Your child will feel safer if they know what they are to do in these situations. BUS ROUTES For your convenience an alphabetical street name list with bus numbers is located on the Wayne Local website www.wayne-local.com  . ************************************************* WELLNESS WC Combined Health District Newsletter  Nov. 2015 HOLIDAY FOOD SAFETY   Food is always an important part of holiday festivities.  But holiday meals can take a turn for the worse if food safety isn’t a regular ingredient in preparing and cooking the food.   The food you serve your family can be very harmful if it isn’t handled safely or refrigerated properly.   Foodborne disease infections continue to be a serious health issue in the United States, causing an estimated 76 million people to become sick each year.  The most common foodborne diseases associated with meat, poultry and fish are Salmonella, Campylobacter, and E. Coli.   Most people become sick by eating contaminated foods or beverages or by coming in contact with someone who has a foodborne illness.   Be “food safe” during the holidays by following these four basic steps of food safety:  Clean, Separate, Cook, and Chill.   Clean  Remember to wash your hands with soap and warm water for 20 seconds before and after handling food.  Handwashing is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of foodborne illness.   Separate  Try to use one cutting board for raw meat, poultry, and seafood and a separate one for fresh produce.  Keep fish and seafood, raw turkey, roasts, hams, and other meats and their juices separate from other side dishes when preparing meals.   Cook  Cook meat and poultry to a safe minimum internal temperature:  turkey, stuffing, casseroles, and leftovers to 165 Deg. F; beef, veal and lamb roasts to 145 Deg. F; “fully cooked” ham to 140 Deg. F and fresh ham, pork, and egg dishes to 160 Deg. F.  Use a food thermometer.   Chill  Chill food promptly.  Keep the fridge at 40 Deg. F or below to prevent bacteria from growing.  Custard pies and other egg dishes should always be kept cool.  Put left-overs in the refrigerator within 2 hours.  Remember to never defrost food at room temperature. GUIDELINES FOR KEEPING CHILDREN HOME FROM SCHOOL DUE TO ILLNESS   It is sometimes difficult to decide when and how long to keep an ill child home from school. The following guidelines represent the more common childhood illnesses.   CHICKEN POX: A skin rash consisting of small blisters, which leave scabs. A slight fever may or may not be present. There may be blisters and scabs all present at the same time. Your child should remain home until all blisters have scabbed over, usually 5-7 days after the appearance of the first crop of blisters. COMMON COLD: Irritated throat, watery discharge from the nose and eyes, sneezing, chills and general body discomfort. Your child should remain home if symptoms are serious enough to interfere with your child’s ability to learn. Medical care should be obtained if symptoms persist beyond 7-10 days, fever develops, or discharge becomes yellow to green. FEVER: If your child’s temperature is 100 degrees Fahrenheit or greater (or 1 or 2 degrees above the child’s normal temperature) (s)he should remain home until (s)he has been without fever for a full 24 hours. Remember fever is a symptom indicating the presence of an illness. FLU: Abrupt onset of fever, chills, headache and sore muscles. Runny nose, sore throat, and cough are common. Your child should remain home from school until symptoms are gone and the child is without fever for 24 hours. HEAD LICE: Lice are small grayish-tan, wingless insects that lay eggs called nits. Nits are firmly attached to the hair shafts, close to the scalp. Nits are much easier to see and detect than lice. They are small white specks, which are usually found at the nape of the neck and behind the ears. Following lice infestation, your child may return to school after receiving treatment with a pediculicide shampoo. PAIN: If your child complains, or behavior indicates, that (s)he is experiencing persistent pain, (s)he should be evaluated by a physician before your child is sent to school. PINKEYE: Redness and swelling of the membranes of the eye with burning or itching, yellow or green drainage coming from one or both eyes, or crusts on the eyelids. Your child should remain home from school until receiving 24 hours of antibiotic therapy, as determined by your physician, and discharge from the eyes has stopped. SKIN RASHES: A physician should evaluate skin rashes of unknown origin before your child is sent to school. STREP THROAT AND SCARLET FEVER: Strep throat usually begins with fever, sore and red throat, possibly pus spots on the back of the throat, tender swollen glands of the neck. With scarlet fever there are all the symptoms of strep throat as well as a strawberry appearance to the tongue and rash of the skin. High fever, nausea and vomiting may also occur. Your child should remain home from school until receiving a full 24 hours of antibiotic therapy and until without fever or vomiting for 24 hours. Most physicians will advise rest at home 1-2 days after a strep infection. VOMITING AND DIARRHEA (INTESTINAL VIRAL INFECTIONS): Stomach ache, cramping, nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea, possible fever, headache, and body aches. Your child should remain at home until without vomiting, diarrhea or fever for a full 24 hours. If your child has had any of these symptoms during the night, (s)he should not be sent to school the following day.   Jen Royalty jroyalty@wayne-local.com Wayne Local School Nurse ************************************************* GENERAL INFORMATION CHILD ABUSE OR NEGLECT Ohioans who suspect child abuse or neglect now have one phone number that can put them in contact with child welfare or law enforcement officers in their county.
