AUTHOR VISIT WITH JERRY PALLOTTA On December 14, author Jerry Pallotta will visit Waynesville Elementary. Jerry is an award-winning author of children’s alphabet books. He combines interesting facts, detailed research, humor, and realistic illustrations that children love. Jerry’s first book called, Ocean Alphabet set the path for him. He has since written 30 nonfiction alphabet titles that include Icky Bug Alphabet, Airplane Alphabet, Flower Alphabet and Eyeball Alphabet. Jerry also brings nonfiction subjects to the field of elementary math in a beautifully illustrated format. His math literacy books count from zero to zillions, in titles such as Underwater Counting Even Numbers, Underwater Counting Odd Numbers, Count to a Million, and Icky Bug Numbers. Jerry’s newest series, Who Would Win, are fact filled non-fiction books comparing two rivals. These books are attracting the most reluctant readers! Many of these titles are on the pre- order form. In his presentations, Jerry discusses writing, researching, working with illustrators, designing, editing and publishing his books. We are excited to have him come from Massachusetts to speak to our students! We appreciate the B.A.T.S (Bringing Authors to Schools) Organization for helping make this visit possible, and the support of Wayne Local Schools. EMPTY BOWLS Student in art club have started their first Annual Empty Bowls outreach, what is Empty Bowls? It is a fundraiser for our art program here at the school and to help fight hunger! Handmade bowls will be sold (with food in them) January 21st at three basketball games to raise funds. A donation will be made investing back into our community to fight hunger. For example to a local food pantry or the Food to Go program we have here at the school could be a beneficiary of the student's choosing to direct the funds. Students and staff have been coming into the art room for the past month to build/throw and glaze ceramic bowls. We have a goal of 100 bowls and would love to have anyone who is willing to come in and help. Someone from the art department will be after school every Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday to facilitate and help you get involved. It may be that you glaze a bowl that is made or even prep for throwing on the wheel, every bit counts and helps us reach our goal. No role is too small! We had the high school and middle school student council come in this week and made 13 bowls and glazed 10 in one setting!! It was a great turn out. Thanks Student Council!! KEETON'S THIRD GRADE MATH Third Grade Math students did a great job first quarter establishing routine and becoming quite the eager problem solvers. First quarter was spent on standards that are familiar to students coming from second grade such as addition and subtraction with and without regrouping along with writing numbers in standard, expanded, and written form. We also worked on our estimating skills by learning a fun "rounding reminder" that the students say they can't get out of their head! We are now moving on to our units on multiplication and division. Each week students are expected to complete a weekly homework assignment that consists of various concepts that need to be practiced and revisited. Students are also completing a weekly fluency practice sheet in which they are timed each night for one minute by an adult, and turned in each Friday. With Fact Fluency being an Ohio State Standard for Third grade, I’m looking forward to this homework piece being a part in students being successful with this standard this year. We have been taking most of our regular Math assessments online to better prepare students for the Ohio Air Math Test they will be taking in the Spring on the Computer. Students are doing a great job getting accustomed to working out the problems on paper and transferring their answers on the computer. Having students practice this skill as a normal part of their math routine will help familiarize them with the format and feel more comfortable when it comes time to taking the Air test in the Spring. Everyone loves a little friendly competition and it is no different for our third graders when it comes to our online program First in Math. This is an awesome online program that helps increase student’s problem solving, critical thinking, and basic math skills in a very fun way. Students are able to access this program at school and at home as well. Each student has their own personal log in which gives them access to their math textbook as well as their reading book. This is a great tool to keep updated on weekly math standards taught and also for good reinforcement and review if needed. Mrs. Stacy Keeton skeeton@wayne-local.com Third Grade Math Teacher CHRISTMAS CLUB: The Christmas Club was started last year as a community service or community outreach opportunity for our young learners. This year, the club is made up of 4th grade students. The club is meeting every Thursday afterschool from 3:35-4:35; Nov. 3rd, 10th, 17th, Dec. 1st, and Dec. 8th. The club goal is to allow students to gather and meet with one another, learn a ‘timeless craft project’, and experience ‘giving’. The students will be making Christmas Care Packages, and decorating table top Christmas Trees to donate to the residents of Quaker Heights. Through generous donations of students’ families, staff and friends we hope to be able to make plenty of presents for these wonderful residents. We look forward to working with these students, and helping them see the ‘Joy’ of giving. During meeting times, we will enjoy Holiday songs, classical movies, create care packages and decorate small trees to hand deliver to our Quaker Heights residents. GARAFOLO’S 4TH GRADE: Our 4th grade ELA classroom has many things going on at all times. We attempt to match strategies, materials, and instructional pacing to meet the individual needs of students, as well as making learning accessible and challenging for everyone in the classroom. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Journey’s, is the Reading series that we are using this year. This program is a great road map for guiding the direction of student learning. There are countless resources, materials and supplies embedded in this program. I want to give a very large ‘Thank you’ to our PTO, Tammy Burchfield, Randy Gebhardt, Nick Jones and Ron James for amazing new technology in our building. Our class has been using laptops, but are now diving into Chrome Books at least 2-3 times a week during independent learning stations, and whole group instruction. Technology is an intricate part in meeting the individual learning needs of the students in our classroom. The Chrome Books are used during our ELA classroom instruction time within learning stations. Anyone can participate in art club, even if they are not enrolled in an art class. Students learned related vocabulary and were able to see some fun examples of optical illusions before beginning their project. Mixed Media I: 7th and 8th graders are currently working on a paper maché imaginary creatures. The process includes finding reference photos of animals, creating a sketch, making an armature (a skeleton of wire, tape and newspaper) and using a glue mixture and newspaper strips to harden the form. When everyone is finished they will paint their creations! High School: 2D: Students recently stretched their own canvas and are beginning a canvas painting in class. They were able to choose their topic and subject matter and had to create a sketch to submit before beginning their project. 3D: Students are continuing with their clay unit. Some are working on projects that they are building by hand and everyone has been taking turns creating projects on the ceramic wheels. AP/Advanced: Students are continuing to develop the breadth portion of their portfolios to submit to the college board for potential college credit. Everyone is given a variety of prompts over the course of the semester with encouragement to be experimental, as well as spend time both inside and outside class to refine their skills. Despite holding their own in the first half, the wind and Badin proved to be too much for the Lady Spartans when a Badin midfielder scored a breakaway goal halfway through the second half. The loss made Waynesville District Runners-Up for the second year in a row and put an end to yet another stellar season. The Lady Spartans finished with a 15-2-2 record, were undefeated SWBL League Champions for the second year in a row, and broke the record for most goals scored in a single game this year. The success of the team resulted in several individual players being recognized for their own accomplishments. Alexa Neely, Rhianna Powell, Marcella Sizer, and Emily O'Connor all earned 1st Team All SWBL Awards. 2nd Team All SWBL Awards were awarded to Reagan Metzler, Katie Feldmann, and Anna Miller. Megan Osterhage and Jessica Gill won 3rd Team All SWBL Awards. Alexa Neely was recognized as the Dayton South Player of the Year and was Dayton South 1st Team. Keep in mind that there are also everyday actions that can help prevent the spread of viruses that cause respiratory illnesses like the flu. Take these steps to protect your health: Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze and before eating. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective. Try to avoid close contact with sick people. If you get sick with influenza, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Contact your medical provider if symptoms become severe or worsen. By using data from sites like Facebook and Twitter, Sickweather uses people’s posts to give you a real-time understanding of what exactly you’re dealing with in your area, whether it be the flu, the common cold or even pink eye. Rather than waiting days for an open appointment, Zocdoc will match you with doctors in your area -- all you have to do is provide some information, such as a reason for your visit and insurance information (iOS, Android). 4. Doctor on Demand: Skip that dreaded doctor’s visit with Doctor on Demand, which allows you to get professional help while in the comfort of your own home. Using a video conference feature, this app connects you to board-certified doctors in your state for just $40 (iOS, Android). 5. Home Remedies+: Maybe you don’t have the full-on flu, but rather a mild cold for which you’d like to ease symptoms in a natural way. The app Home Remedies+ provides a variety of recipes for common ailments, Parenting.com reports. For example, ginger tea for a cold or lemon and honey for a cough. What do you have to lose? (iOS, Android) GUIDELINES FOR KEEPING CHILDREN HOME FROM SCHOOL DUE TO ILLNESS It is sometimes difficult to decide when and how long to keep an ill child home from school. The following guidelines represent the more common childhood illnesses. CHICKEN POX: A skin rash consisting of small blisters, which leave scabs. A slight fever may or may not be present. There may be blisters and scabs all present at the same time. Your child should remain home until all blisters have scabbed over, usually 5-7 days after the appearance of the first crop of blisters. COMMON COLD: Irritated throat, watery discharge from the nose and eyes, sneezing, chills and general body discomfort. Your child should remain home if symptoms are serious enough to interfere with your child’s ability to learn. Medical care should be obtained if symptoms persist beyond 7-10 days, fever develops, or discharge becomes yellow to green. FEVER: If your child’s temperature is 100 degrees Fahrenheit or greater (or 1 or 2 degrees above the child’s normal temperature) (s)he should remain home until (s)he has been without fever for a full 24 hours. Remember fever is a symptom indicating the presence of an illness. FLU: Abrupt onset of fever, chills, headache and sore muscles. Runny nose, sore throat, and cough are common. Your child should remain home from school until symptoms are gone and the child is without fever for 24 hours. HEAD LICE: Lice are small grayish-tan, wingless insects that lay eggs called nits. Nits are firmly attached to the hair shafts, close to the scalp. Nits are much easier to see and detect than lice. They are small white specks, which are usually found at the nape of the neck and behind the ears. Following lice infestation, your child may return to school after receiving treatment with a pediculicide shampoo. PAIN: If your child complains, or behavior indicates, that (s)he is experiencing persistent pain, (s)he should be evaluated by a physician before your child is sent to school. PINKEYE: Redness and swelling of the membranes of the eye with burning or itching, yellow or green drainage coming from one or both eyes, or crusts on the eyelids. Your child should remain home from school until receiving 24 hours of antibiotic therapy, as determined by your physician, and discharge from the eyes has stopped. SKIN RASHES: A physician should evaluate skin rashes of unknown origin before your child is sent to school. STREP THROAT AND SCARLET FEVER: Strep throat usually begins with fever, sore and red throat, possibly pus spots on the back of the throat, tender swollen glands of the neck. With scarlet fever there are all the symptoms of strep throat as well as a strawberry appearance to the tongue and rash of the skin. High fever, nausea and vomiting may also occur. Your child should remain home from school until receiving a full 24 hours of antibiotic therapy and until without fever or vomiting for 24 hours. Most physicians will advise rest at home 1-2 days after a strep infection. VOMITING AND DIARRHEA (INTESTINAL VIRAL INFECTIONS): Stomach ache, cramping, nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea, possible fever, headache, and body aches. Your child should remain at home until without vomiting, diarrhea or fever for a full 24 hours. If your child has had any of these symptoms during the night, (s)he should not be sent to school the following day.
