GOOD NEWS FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT’S OFFICE “ONE CALL NOW” TEST SCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY, SEPT. 13 We will perform a test of our One Call Now notification service on Tuesday, September 13. One Call Now is Wayne Local’s notification system used to contact students and school staff quickly and effectively by phone, email, and/or text message. You can receive phone calls, text alerts or emails regarding School Closings, Delays, or other Special Events/Circumstances. Text messaging and emails will be received faster than phone calls; so we always encourage subscribers to sign up for text and/or email. To register for One Call Now please send your information to Jim Lucas at jlucas@wayne-local.com or call him at 513 897-7011. Mr. Lucas can also address any questions or problem you encounter. Please provide him with your name, phone number and or email. State your preference phone call, text message or email notification. When contacting Jim Lucas to subscribe or unsubscribe you will need to supply all of the following information: Phone number that is being contacted. Parents’ name and student’s name. Phone number that you can be reached at if we have questions. PROCEDURES FOR SCHOOL THREATS All threats to our schools or students/staff are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly. When we receive a threat we immediately determine the level; our protocol establishes multiple levels. So our response is based upon the assessed level; not the emotional response. After threat assessment our first priorities are insuring the safety of all students and staff; then assisting law enforcement with investigative efforts. Quick communication with parents and community is a goal; but it cannot come at the expense of our first priority in those first moments after a threat is made, to protect the children and staff under our care. We do not release all details to the public about the threat because it has become an “ongoing investigation;” students, staff, parents and community members are not privy to all aspects of a threat. As soon as possible the school district will notify parents and community with current, accurate information as to what is happening. This is balanced with law enforcement and district personnel searching the buildings to assure the campus is safe. When we determine modes of communication; we already know in advance that text, email, social media, and the District’s website are the fastest methods to communicate. The phone call option takes over an hour to complete just one message. Multiple phone messages actually bog down the system. Text and email messages are immediate and allow us to send out multiple messages in a short duration. This is why we stress signing up for “One Call Now” immediately if you have not done so. During an evolving situation like threats or worse; we are more agile in our ability to communicate. The text option allows a limited number of characters so rather than edit the message; we feel it’s best to direct receivers to the District’s website for complete details. Everything we communicate also goes out on Facebook; we highly recommend that parents follow the District’s Facebook page and the Superintendent’s Facebook page. My Facebook page is set up so anyone can read my messages and it is synchronized to the district’s website via a direct feed. 9/11 FLAG FLYING AT THE FOOTBALL GAME TONIGHT We Remember 9/11 is a Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) designed 9/11 commemorative flag. Four passenger airliners were hijacked and the sites of the crashes are honored on the flag. Local DAR members obtained the flag for Wayne Local Schools. SUB PARAPROFESSIONALS NEEDED WLS is in need of sub paraprofessionals to work with our special needs children. If you are interested please fill out the WLS Non-cert application. You must have both your BCI and FBI background checks on file with WLS. Please turn in the application at the Superintendent’s Office. GOOD NEWS ABOUT WES CONFERENCES: Along with our evening conferences that we normally offer, Waynesville Elementary is also offering a full day of conferences on October 21, 2016. October 21st is a day off for students, but it is a full work day for our staff. At WES this day will be dedicated for parent / teacher conferences. We hope that adding this day to our conference schedule is something that parents will take advantage of! Please communicate with your child’s teacher to schedule a conference for October 21! PAINT A SPARTAN HEAD - ART CLUB CONTEST AND FUNDRAISER! Paint a Spartan Helmet any way you want! For this contest, a helmet will be pre-traced on an 8x10 canvas and you will be able to use orange, black and white paint to customize your painting! The cost to participate is a minimum $5.00 donation per person and can be paid in cash or check to WHS. Everyone in grades 6-12 that creates a painting will be part of a contest in which the winner will receive a $25.00 gift card of their choice! Two runner-ups will receive $10.00 gift cards of their choice. The winners will be selected by a panel of faculty that will vote for their favorite paintings. Any students in the middle school or high school are encouraged to participate. We can’t wait for you to join us in this first ever exciting event! RICHARDS’ CLASSROOM Welcome back to all WES second grade students. I think I can speak for all of the second grade teachers that we are thrilled to start a new school year. Second grade students will continue to practice math and enrich their number sense with our Math In Focus curriculum. This curriculum offers a variety of manipulatives and tools intended for the development and understanding of numerical relationships. It emphasizes number sense and place value and allows students to practice solving problems in a variety of ways. It is a curriculum designed to enhance all learning styles and develop mathematical minds. This year we will learn to multiply and divide. We will explore fractions, solve money problems and tell time. We will add and subtract with regrouping. Just watch what we can do. You will be amazed. We are excited about Math in Second Grade! Second grade students will also be using the JOURNEYS Reading/ELA curriculum. Journeys is a comprehensive approach to teaching literacy. Not only will students be reading various genres across the curriculum, they will be comparing texts, both fiction and non-fiction, for similarities and differences. They will be digging deeper into the text to extract meaning and understanding. They will use resources like dictionaries and glossaries to support vocabulary instruction. They will be provided opportunities to use technology for literacy instruction via projectable texts and skill sets. Students will also respond to text in written form in journals and via extended response questions. Journeys supports literacy by incorporating spelling, phonics, and grammar into weekly instruction. It provides a variety of books and resources to differentiate and personalize instruction. Journeys supports all learners and offers a variety of supplemental materials designed to grow each and every reader. It is a comprehensive and fun approach to reading. We love reading in second grade. Ask your child to tell you about his/her day. Spend time reading and practice math facts at home. Let’s see how far we can GROW!! Ms. Richards crichards@wayne-local.com GOOD NEWS FROM MR. HINES’ 7TH GRADE HISTORY CLASS The seventh graders are off to a great start this school year in my world history class. So far we have learned what history is and why it is important to study what other cultures have achieved in the past. To help the students better learn about ancient cultures, we have been learning about the science behind archaeology. The students had the opportunity to get their hand dirty by digging for artifacts. This helped them better understand the work archaeologist do. They learned how to reconstruct artifacts from many broken pieces and to formulate a conclusion as to what ancient people may have been doing with the artifacts they had found. Next week we will be discussing what it takes for a culture to become a civilization. I look forward to helping the 7th grades explore our fascinating world. Mr. Hines thines@wayne-local.com EIGHTH GRADE LANGUAGE ARTS The year is off to a strong start in eighth grade! Although we are only three weeks into the school year, students have been working hard to analyze elements of fiction, master vocabulary, and compose effective essays. With the addition of 30 Chromebooks to our classroom, students are experiencing technology on an almost daily basis. So far, we have used them to conduct research, complete timed writing responses, peer edit papers, and collaborate on projects. I’m excited about the possibilities this technology provides for enhancing my curriculum; please ask your child to login to Google Classroom and show you around! In addition to our exposure to technology, students continue to delve into the tried and true novel. My regular language arts block is reading Where the Red Fern Grows, while my advanced students explore To Kill a Mockingbird. These classic novels provide the means to learn more about The Great Depression, be immersed in a great story, and learn to love timeless protagonists. Each student will also make twice monthly trips to the library to select the book of their choice. In an effort to provide daily exposure to the newest titles, I also maintain an extensive classroom library. I encourage students to let me know which books I should purchase, and maintain an Amazon Wish List. Meghan Maloney Language Arts mmaloney@wayne-local.com FUNDAMENTALS OF MATH The school year has gotten off to a great start as the students are learning how to add positive and negative integers and combining like terms. The students are working extremely hard adjusting to this challenging curriculum. The students have been working in small groups and also teaching one another tips and tricks to remember the processes for each expression. The class will have their first assessment of the school year next week and then moving on to the next topic- Order of Operations. We are looking forward to watching the students continue to be challenged and prepare themselves for a rigorous curriculum to improve their Math abilities. BAKER’S ROOM Sixth graders in Mrs. Baker’s room just finished reading about the Summer Olympics. They read about events and athletes and were excited to journal about their favorite sports. The Mary L. Cook Library provided the class with books about different sports and athletes at the Olympics. Each Friday, the students read a news article from New 2 You. Their favorite has been about M & M’s birthday and doing a prediction and graph using M & M’s and then eating them. This week, they will be reading about the 9/11 Memorial. Students who attend Rainbow Reading will be working on improving their basic reading skill to become lifelong learners. We will have a Parent Information Night on Tuesday, September 20, from 6:00-7:00pm, in the Waynesville Elementary Media Center, for all our student’s parents. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. You will have the opportunity to meet us and receive specific information about the program, as well as ideas to help your child at home. Reading aloud to your child is a great way to help them build good reading skill and boost a love a reading. Here are some hints for reading aloud at home. Try to read to your child every day. You might aim for 10-15 minutes of bedtime reading for a peaceful end to the day. Bring along a book, and read during a sibling’s sports practice. Ask your child to turn the pages while you read. Also, have him/her finish sentences that rhyme or fill in words they know. Go slowly so your child has time to understand the story and look at the illustrations. They will enjoy reading time more if they play an active role. Be playful by using different voices for different character (deep voice for a giant, or a small, squeaky voice for an ant). Or substitute your child’s name for the main character’s name and use family member’s names for other characters. If you make a mistake while reading, make the correction aloud so your child hears what you are doing in your head, it helps them when they get stuck on a word while they are reading. Just remember you don’t have to be an expert reader – your child will love it when you read aloud because it is with you. Keep reading, Mrs. C. On Friday, September 9th, the Spartan Marching Band will welcome nearly 70 7th and 8th grade band members for Middle School Band Night! We have never had a middle school band night quite so early in the season, so I am especially proud of how hard the 7th and 8th grade bands have been working to prepare for this fun night during class! We look forward to joining with the Spartan Marching Band for a night of fun tunes to entertain the crowd! ATTENTION ALL WAYNESVILLE SPARTAN MARCHING BAND ALUMNI This year, the Waynesville Marching Band is once again inviting any band alumni to join us on Friday, September 16, 2016 (Homecoming) for our Alumni Marching Band! We will meet at 4:00pm in the band room on Friday to get organized, and then rehearse with the high school band from 4:30-5:15pm in the stadium before the game. The current band members and our Band Boosters will provide dinner for everyone after rehearsing. Alumni band members will march out in the pre game block and play the fight song and Star Spangled Banner (and make the tunnel for the team!). We will then form the same block and march out to perform a halftime show of three tunes (Hang on Sloopy, Crazy Train, and The Hey Song). Varsity Volleyball 7-1 (2-0) and JV is 6-3 (2-0) On Wednesday, the volleyball teams hosted Blanchester. The Varsity team won in 3 sets, 27-25, 25-12, and 25-15. Leading the team were Brianna Barton with 10 aces, 9 digs, and 19 assists, Abby Struewing chipped in with 9 aces, and Kerstyn Purkey led the offense with 11 kills. The JV team lost in 3 sets, 25-13, 23-25, and 22-25. Stat leaders were Sarah Hartman with 6 aces, Lydia Vrettos with 5 aces and 5 assists, Emma Seidenschmidt also with 5 assists, and Reagan Blanton with 4 kills. On Thursday, the teams traveled to Northridge and brought home victories. Varsity defeated the Polar Bears in 3: 25-8, 25-11, and 25-9. Leading stat categories was Dora Vrettos with 8 aces, Lyndsay Magoto chipped in with 7 aces, Kerstyn Purkey with 8 kills, Kaitlin Krumnauer with 7 kills, Brianna Barton with 13 assists, and Allison Savage with 5 digs. JV defeated Northridge 25-6, 25-5. Stat leaders were Kayla Bakker with 17 aces, Sarah Hartman with 5 kills, and Lydia Vrettos with 8 assists. The Spartans were defeated by Clinton Massie on Tuesday at Majestic Springs. Drake Stiles and Dagan Stiles finished with the lowest scores for Waynesville. On Thursday, the team hosted Preble Shawnee and shot a season-low score of 187 as a team. Jackson Beachler and Dagan Stiles both improved their personal best scores. The JV team was also defeated by Clinton Massie JV on Tuesday. Hunter Clements and Cooper Fravel led the team in scoring. The JV team traveled to Jamaica Run on Thursday where they were defeated by Carlisle JV. Waynesville was led by Bryce Daniel and Joe Cockerham. Boys Varsity Soccer split non-league games - Varsity Spartans played very well on Tuesday against the Franklin Wildcats and came away with a 4-0 victory. The Spartans scored 20% of their shots on goal with 2 goals in each half. The first Spartan goal was 12 minutes into the first half with Mario Navarro’s switch in the attacking third where Nikolas Ball connected with a volley and shot combination. The second Spartan goal was by Ryan Bulcher who took a long shot on goal at about the 40 yard line. The Franklin goalie bobbled the shot and it rolled into the goal. In the second half freshman Ryan Papanek scored both goals in the 19th and 17th minute. Ryan’s first goal in the second half was a touch, touch, shot that scored top, middle netting. Ryan’s second goal was a shot by Jared Greer that was bobbled by the keeper while Mac Greeley and Ryan Papanek crashed the goal for the fourth and final Spartan goal of the night. Franklin had several attacks on goal that would have prevented the shut out if defender Daniel Driscoll had not been able to stop the ball when our keeper was not in a position to make the save. Those non-goalie saves by Driscoll as well as several more shots denied by keeper Gehrig Habermehl allowed the Spartans to walk away with the shutout victory. On Thursday the Spartans hosted Bishop Fenwick. Fenwick just tied the team that’s ranked second in the state on Tuesday. While we endured the downpour of rain we also experienced what possessing the ball should look like and what it means if we don’t possess the ball. Fenwick scored 3 goals in the first half and 2 goals in the second half for a 0-5 game. While the Spartans had most of the opportunities from long throw-ins and set pieces, none were able to convert to a goal. The Varsity and JV Spartans travel to Preble Shawnee for 5:30 and 7:15 games next Tuesday. On Thursday, Varsity will host league rivals the Madison Mohawks at 5:30. Thanks for all the support at the home game. Middle School Volleyball This week the 7th and 8th grade volleyball teams played 3 games. We started off Tuesday on the road where both teams had tough losses against strong Brookville teams. On Wednesday we came back home to play Blanchester. The 7th grade team played 3 sets and couldn't come out with the win, while the 8th graders pulled out a victory. We ended the week on Thursday at Preble Shawnee. 7th grade pulled together to get the win and 8th grade battled hard in 3 sets, but couldn't come out with a win. Both teams end the week with a record of 5-2. Middle School Football Last Wednesday both teams played Clinton Massie. The 7th grade fell by a score of 35-0. The 8th grade won in dominant fashion by a score of 36-0. This week both teams played Carlisle. The 7th grade team lost 36-0. The game was highlighted by tough runs from running backs Rylee Jones, Clellon Tamme, and Ty Walters. The 8th grade defeated Carlisle 42-0. Jake Amburgy and Hunter Marshall both scored a touchdown and Seth Bloom added 3 more touchdowns. Next week both teams play at home against Dixie with the 7th grade starting at 5 and 8th grade following after. Go Spartans! Come out and show your ORANGE SPARTAN PRIDE! The Cross Country Team had a very successful weekend at Hillsboro's Ohio Classic Cross Country Extravaganza! The high school women went first and finished the race as champions beating 13 other schools. Our team was led by the second place finish of Tara Todd and was followed closely by Emily O'Connor in 3rd and Grace Aldrich in 5th. Behind this trio of runners was Kenna Harvey in 12th, Megan Handle in 14th, Katie Feldmann in 18th and Morgan Lowing in 26th out of 88 girls in the race. Our HS men's team ran next finishing 6th in the tough field of 14 teams and 130 runners. The men were lead once again by Max Austin followed by fellow senior Kyle Boggeln. Next in order for the Spartans were Scott Coppock, David Crossgrove, Derek Phillips, Connor Johnson, Ian Parry, Cian McGuire, Morgan Lowe, and Joe Bensman. Next in line for the Spartans were the JH girls team. Despite not having our best runner in Hannah Gill present the team ran exceptionally well and fined a close 2nd to Western Brown in the 10 team race. Kate Handle lead our girls finishing in 3rd place followed closely by Leah Butterbaugh in 4th place. Viviana Syvertsen was next in 11th, Teagan Cassidy in 18th and Melynn Duff in 22nd in the 66 girl race. The last race of the day was the JH boys who came away with a dominating win for the second weekend in a row. This time the boys came away with a perfect score of 15 meaning our first 5 runners were the first 5 to cross the finish line in the race! Fairfield was a distant second with 72 points in the 14 team field. Our top 5 finishers in order were Colin Amato, Kaden Harvey in a virtual dead heat to the finish line, Denver Johnson, and Trevor Camp separated by only 2 seconds, and Levi Morgan who was in a battle to the finish with Fairfield's number 1 runner beating him by a few steps at the tape to preserve the perfect score! Next in for our young Spartans was Stefan Muterspaw in 10th and Rhett Bailey in 12th. Following Rhett in order were Caden Adams, Gavin Prince, Will Damron, Casey Briggs, Joey Phillips, Jacob Meade and Gabe Coppock. Outstanding job by all!! Lady Spartan’s Soccer Off to 4-1 Start On 8/23 the Lady Spartans took on Oakwood at home to open the 2016 season. The JV got things started with a 1-1 tie. The lone goal for the Spartans was scored by Freshman Willa Pardon on an assist by Sophomore Hannah Bulcher’s corner kick. The varsity then took the field and started their season with a 1- 0 victory. The match was a tough fought battle and the Spartans continued to battle until the very end. With less than a minute Senior Captain Alexa Neely took a through ball from Senior Captain Reagan Metzler and put it past the keeper for the lone goal of the game. Senior Captain Rhianna Powell sealed the net on the night with several saves. On Thursday, 8/25 both teams took on a very tough Monroe team at their place and both teams fell to the Hornets. The JV lost 1-0 and Varsity lost by 2-1 score. Alexa Neely netted the only goal for the Spartans in this game. On Tuesday, 8/30 the Lady Spartans Varsity started league play and came away with 2 victories against Carlisle and Dixie on the road. On Tuesday the girls took on Carlisle and found themselves down 1-0 at the half. They continued to play and with just under 20 minutes to play Alexa Neely took a ball from Junior Megan Osterhage and beat the keeper to knot the score at 1-1. That was short lived as a mistake by the Spartans allowed Carlisle to once again take the lead. This sparked a response and over the 10 minutes the Lady’s put 4 more in the back of Carlisle’s net to close out with a 5-2 win. These four goals were scored by Junior Liana Webb, Freshman Megan Handle, Osterhage, and Neely off assists from Neely and Sophomore Anna Miller (2). On Thursday, 9/1 the Varsity continued their winning ways defeating Dixie by a score of 16-0 to go to 2-0-0 in the league and 3-1-0 overall. In this game 13 different players netted goals and many had assists. Goals were scored by: Seniors Alexa Neely, Emily O’Connor, Rhianna Powell, Haley Price, Sidney Thomson & Kailee Woods; Juniors Courtney Rentz (2), Megan Osterhage (2) & Liana Webb; Sophomore Anna Miller; and Freshman Megan Handle (2), Josie Miller, & Kendra Neely. Assists were Megan Handle (4), Reagan Metzler (2), Alexa Neely, and Junior Jessica Gill. On Wednesday, 8/31 the Lady Spartans JV hosted Clinton Massie and came away with a 3-1 victory. Scoring for the team was Sophomore Cheyenne Smith, Sophomore Sara Napier, and Freshman Kelsey Stamm on assists by Napier, Freshman Kendra Neely, and Freshman Caroline Bensman. This Tuesday, 9/6 both the Varsity and the JV faced Franklin at home. The JV started the night off with a 5-0 victory over Franklin. After a scoreless first half, Freshman Kelsey Stamm got the second half rolling with a goal within 30 seconds of starting play. Sophomore Lexi Henry followed up with two goals of her own. Freshman Olyvia Blythe then got her first goal of the season by finishing Freshman Riley Rice's corner kick. Sophomore Cheyenne Smith finished the game with a goal assisted by Sophomore Hannah Bulcher. The Varsity continued their winning ways with a 4-0 victory over Franklin. Senior Alexa Neely got the first goal of the game when she dribbled through the Wildcats' defense for a breakaway goal. Later in the first half, Senior Haley Price played a through ball onto the foot of Freshman Megan Handle who finished the goal to put the Lady Spartans up 2-0 going into halftime. Neely put in the 3rd goal of the game off of Senior Reagan Metzler's direct kick. Handle scored the final goal of the game off of Senior Emily O'Connor's long ball into the box. With their victory over Franklin, the Lady Spartans advance to 4-1 on the season. Thursday night, 9/8 the JV played a tough Beavercreek team at Beavercreek. The Lady Spartans were down 3-0 at halftime. After playing Beavercreek even for 16 minutes of the 2nd half, the game was called due to lightning. The JV's record so far this season is 2-2-1. Next week, the Lady Spartans look to stay undefeated in the league with two league games. Come out and support both teams on Tuesday as they take on Preble Shawnee here at home for 1st place in the league at 5:30 and 7:15 pm. On Thursday, head to Madison to cheer on the Lady Spartans as they take on the Lady Mohawks. The Spartan Girls tennis team had a light week with two matches. The good news is we welcomed back Roslyn Papeti from a wrist injury. On Tuesday we played Fenwick at home and lost 1-4. Katelyn Abney won her sixth match of the season. At Preble Shawnee on Thursday we lost 0-5. We have a busy next week with matches; 9/12-at Alter 9/13-home vs Middletown Madison 9/14-home vs Little Miami 9/15-home vs Milton-Union 9/17-home vs Greeneview at 10:00am Waynesville Football The Spartans suffered a setback last Friday at Indian Hill. This week they look to rebound at home against Blanchester. The Spartans would like to thank everyone that continues to support them and look forward to a large crowd this evening. Prior to the start of the game the Spartans will remember the tragic events of September 11, 2001 with a moment of silence. The Waynesville girls golf team has had an outstanding past couple of weeks taking on teams from Miamisburg, Valley View, Edgewood and Alter high schools and winning three of four matches. Major mental perseverance through the heat, playing tough courses and individual competitive drive from Kate Von Handorf, Marissa Derrick, Sydni Stanley, Staci Ryane and Hannah Townsend have found these tough fighters in the win column. Every day, every shot on the course is different and that is what makes Golf such a mental game. These ladies can adapt and overcome so many different situations on the golf course and just imagine how this translates to real life. They are learning the skills of golf, while at the same time; they are learning lifelong skills that will help them succeed in their future endeavors. The lady Spartans continue next week matches against Little Miami and Lebanon and then round out the following week against teams from Franklin, Miamisburg and the Valley View Invitational. The team has exciting times still ahead and hoping to still retain skills already learned and get better at skills that we have not yet honed. You can discover your own capabilities without the potential constraints of other people’s thinking. 2016/2017 SEVENTH GRADE VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS The Ohio Department of Health has revised the School Immunization Requirements effective January 4, 2010. All students are to receive an additional dose of Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis) vaccine BEFORE entering the seventh grade. If your child has received a Tdap vaccine within 5 years of entering the seventh grade (2012 or later), this will meet the requirement. Additionally, beginning with the start of the 2016-2017 school year, one dose of meningococcal vaccine is required prior to entry into the 7th grade. This requirement is met if your student has had this vaccine at any time before entering 7th grade. 2016/2017 SENIOR VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS Meningococcal: Beginning with the start of the 2016-2017 school year, all pupils entering the 12th grade are required to be vaccinated against meningococcal. A second (2nd) dose of meningococcal) vaccine is required prior to entry into the 12th grade. The second (2nd) dose must be administered on or after the 16th birthday with at least eight (8) weeks between the first and second dose. If the first dose of meningococcal vaccine was administered after the 16th birthday, a second dose is not required. If a pupil is 15 years of age or younger, only one dose is required.
