New Community Resources to Prevent Prescription Drug Diversion

This past weekend, the official Ribbon-Cutting ceremony for Waynesville's two new medication disposal boxes took place.  These disposal boxes are now available in our community, and are located at the Waynesville Police Department and the Waynesville Pharmacy. 

These permanent disposal boxes offer a secure, environmentally responsible way to dispose of prescription and over-the-counter medications that have expired or are no longer needed.

As part of the efforts to combat the opioid problem in Warren County, two new medication disposal boxes are now available in the community.  Located at the Waynesville Police Department and the Waynesville Pharmacy, these permanent disposal boxes offer a secure, environmentally responsible way to dispose of prescription and over-the-counter medications that have expired or are no longer needed. 

The permanent disposal boxes and a security monitoring system were provided by Solutions Community Counseling and Recovery Centers through a grant from Ohio Mental Health and Addictions Services and the 21st Century CURES Act.  Working in partnership with Chief Gary Copeland of the Waynesville Police Department,  Ken and Kyle Fields at Waynesville Pharmacy, and the Wayne Local School District, the new disposal boxes expand community prevention efforts to combat opioid and heroin addiction and promote safe use, storage, and disposal of medication.   Data shows a connection between the abuse of prescription pain medications – such as Vicodin®, Percocet®, and OxyContin®- and the heroin and overdose problems plaguing Ohio.  Using a secure disposal box helps ensure that these medications won’t be diverted and available for sale or abuse in the community.

Medications including prescription drugs and ointments, over the counter products, patches, samples, and medications for pets may be deposited in the boxes.  Items NOT accepted include:  needles (sharps), thermometers, inhalers, aerosols, liquids and creams.  Medications may be deposited with no questions asked during these hours:

• Waynesville Police Department - Monday through Friday, 8am-4pm (closed 1-2pm)
• Waynesville Pharmacy – Monday through Saturday 7:30am-8:00pm, and Sunday 7:30am- 12 noon.

WHAT ARE WE RECYCLING?

Large items such as couches, chairs, bikes, lawn mowers, white goods, scrap tires, metal, box springs, etc. Old or unused prescription drugs LCNB Shred Day Event will be on site too! We will also be collecting canned goods and non-perishable food items for the Waynesville Food Pantry.

HOW MUCH?

Air Conditioners and Refrigerators will require Freon removal ($15/unit) Good to know:  It is a felony to travel with more than 10 tires per vehicle per ORC 3734.83.  Make multiple trips if needed.  

SORRY:

No hazardous waste (paint, chemicals, motor oil, etc.), or batteries.
