#1 in the State WHS Girls Soccer Brings Spartan Cup Back to Waynesville
Every Monday, the State releases their rankings for the top soccer teams in Ohio for each division, and this week, the Lady Spartans were voted #1 in Division III! The team backed up their ranking by securing two victories this week over Valley View and Milton Union. Despite a rain delay on Tuesday, the Varsity played a strong attacking game against Valley View here at home. Waynesville scored their first goal less than 4 minutes into the game when Jenna Foley played a through ball to Emma Whitaker, who put it in the back of the net. After a 45 minute rain delay, the Lady Spartans returned to put in their second goal within 2 minutes of the restart. This time, Foley headed the ball to Grace Moore who scored on a break-away goal. Waynesville put two more goals in before the half with Allie Freese setting up Foley for goal number 3 and Maddie Beuchat setting up Samantha Erbach for goal number 4. In the second half, Whitaker scored her second goal of the night off of another assist from Beuchat. Brooke Woody scored goal number 6 for the Lady Spartans off Foley’s assist to end the game with a 6-0 win over Valley View, which brought the Spartan Cup back to Waynesville!
Thursday, the Varsity headed to Milton Union to win their 7th league game of the season in a 4-0 victory over the Bulldogs. The Lady Spartans struggled in the first half against Milton Union’s tight defensive set up. The only goal of the first half came when Erbach dropped the ball to Foley in the middle for a beautiful shot over the keeper’s hands. Waynesville managed to break apart the defense in the second half though. Whitaker scored within the first two minutes off of a through ball played by Freese. Then, Erbach played the ball central to Caroline Stupp who ripped a shot into the upper corner of the goal. Beuchat got the final goal of the game when she headed the ball into the goal off of Hannah Gill’s corner kick.
The defense had tremendous play in both games making it difficult for any opponents to break loose and get a good look at the goal. Emma Sizer and Emme Greely shut play down in the middle while Savanna Amburgy, Laine Kuhns, and Kate Handle matched outside runners step-for-step, took the ball, and then started the offense with their own counterattacks. Leah Butterbaugh was a force in the goal cutting off plays early and making saves when she needed to. Their efforts led to 2 more shut-outs this week, giving them 7 shut-outs on the season.
The JV defense led by keepers Gracyn Armstrong and Jesse Hardyman with defenders Lillian Crumback, Emmy Lezotte, Alyza Camp, Kyla Harvey, Katie Dick, and Addison Hardyman also recorded another shut-out this week in their 3-0 victory over Valley View. Libby Bulach scored 2 goals for the Lady Spartans off of assists from Reagan Russell and Jenna Bulcher. Sammie Boswell scored the 3rd goal for Waynesville finishing a pass from Kayann Whitt.
The Lady Spartans play at home next Tuesday against Madison, who is currently 1 game behind them in the SWBL. JV kicks off at 5:30 pm and the Varsity follows at 7:15 pm.
WHS Girls Soccer Now 9-0 With Wins Over Wyoming and Carlisle

The Lady Spartans continued their winning streak this week with back to back wins over Wyoming and Carlisle. Waynesville came out strong in the 1st half against Wyoming scoring 6 goals on the way to their 7-1 victory over the Cowboys. Junior Emma Whitaker got things started with a one-touch finish off of senior Hannah Gill’s corner kick 12 minutes into the game. Junior Maddie Beuchat followed up with a goal into the far side net off of an assist from Whitaker. After receiving a pass wide from Gill, sophomore Allie Freese beat the defenders and slide one under the goalkeeper for goal number three. The Lady Spartans then made a statement by putting 3 more goals in with under 4 minutes to go in the half. Freshman Brooke Woody finished Gill’s direct kick for goal #4, senior Jenna Foley finished Gill’s corner kick for goal #5, and Freese scored a breakaway goal assisted by Gill. Foley scored one more goal for Waynesville in the second half off of Whitaker’s through ball. Strong defensive efforts by senior goalkeeper Leah Butterbaugh, senior defender Emma Sizer, junior defenders Savanna Amburgy and Kate Handle, sophomore defender Laine Kuhns, and freshman defender Emme Greely held the Cowboys scoreless until 5 minutes to go in the game. Gill tied the school record for most assists in a game with a total of 5 assists.
Waynesville followed up their Monday night win with a 12-0 victory on Tuesday over Carlisle. The shutout win over Carlisle is Butterbaugh’s 6th shutout this season. Scoring for Waynesville were Foley with 5 goals, Woody with 2 goals, Whitaker with 4 goals, and sophomore Jenna Bulcher with 1 goal. Gill connected to get 2 more assists, while Woody (2), Amburgy (1), Whitaker (1), and Bulach (1) also set up their teammates for goals.
The Lady Spartans take on Valley View at home next Tuesday and then head to Milton Union on Thursday. JV plays at 5:30 both nights followed by the Varsity at 7:15 pm.
WHS Girls Soccer Defeats Milton Union and Madison Remains Undefeated with 7-0 Record

The Lady Spartans grabbed another two league victories this week with wins over Milton Union at home and on the road at Madison. After a slow start at home on Tuesday, Waynesville found the back of the net when senior Jenna Foley played a through ball down the middle to freshman Samantha Erbach with 24 minutes to go in the first half. Erbach’s goal opened the flood gates for the Spartans resulting in 5 more goals within the next 10 minutes of the game. Foley followed up her assist with a header goal of her own off of senior Hannah Gill’s direct kick. Erbach and Foley connected for the third goal for the Lady Spartans when Foley again played a through ball which Erbach finished. About a minute later, freshman Brooke Woody took a pass from Gill, beat the defense to the outside, and ripped it into the back of the net. Woody later played a beautiful cross into the box that junior Emma Whitaker redirected and freshman Caroline Stupp finished. Woody followed up with her second goal after winning a ball cleared by Milton Union’s keeper and beating her to the goal. Erbach got the final goal of the first half off the assist of sophomore Libby Bulach. The Lady Spartans put 2 more goals in the second half making the final score 9-0. Sophomore Allie Freese scored off junior Maddie Beuchat’s cross, and Woody checked near post to finish Freese’s cross.
The JV also beat Milton Union 8-0 with a strong possession game. Their short passing game provided a lot of shot opportunities. Bulach and freshman Kyla Harvey led the team in scoring with 2 goals apiece. Freshmen Jillian Layne, Kayann Whitt, Danie Scamorza, and Reagan Russell each contributed 1 goal. Whitt and Scamorza each had 2 assists while Layne had 1 assist.
At Madison on Thursday, Waynesville earned a 6-0 victory in a physical match-up. Erbach scored early by finishing Freese’s cross from the right side. Senior Grace Moore followed up with her own break-away goal off of Erbach’s through ball. The 3rd goal came when Woody played a ball through the middle to Erbach, which she ripped into the back of the net. Gill grabbed the 4th goal when she won a goal kick from Madison and drilled the ball past the Madison keeper giving the Lady Spartans a 4-0 lead at halftime. In the second half, Whitaker broke the lull in scoring when she finished Foley’s pass across the mouth of the goal. Foley scored the final goal of the night with a beautiful one-touch finish off of Freese’s cross.
Senior goalkeeper Leah Butterbaugh had a total of 13 saves in the two shutout victories. At this point, she and the defensive efforts of senior Emma Sizer, juniors Savanna Amburgy and Kate Handle, sophomore Laine Kuhns, and freshman Emme Greely have 5 shutouts with only 3 goals against on the season.
The JV beat Madison 6-0, as well. Layne led the team in scoring with 4 goals followed by Russell and sophomore Jenna Bulcher each with 1 goal. Bulach had 2 assists to set up the goals while Bulcher, Whitt, and Harvey each contributed 1 assist. Sophomore goalkeeper Gracyn Armstrong and freshman goalkeeper Jesse Hardyman combined for 9 saves in the shutout.
These wins put Waynesville in first place in the league at the midway point. The Lady Spartans look to continue their winning streak at home on Monday, Sep. 21, when they take on Wyoming. JV kicks off at 5:30 pm, and the Varsity starts at 7:15 pm.
Lady Spartans Soccer Remains Unbeaten After 5th Game!

WHS Girls Soccer advances their record to 5-0 with their victory at Monroe Tuesday night. The Lady Spartans beat the Lady Hornets 5-2 in a physical battle. Freshman Samantha Erbach scored the first goal for Waynesville with 24 minutes remaining in the first half after senior Grace Moore beat the defense to the outside and slotted the ball across the middle. Coming out of half-time with a 1-0 lead, Erbach put two more goals in the net off of assists from freshman Emme Greely and junior Maddie Beuchat. Senior Jenna Foley scored the Lady Spartans' fourth goal by finding the back of the net on a cross from freshman Brooke Woody. After Monroe finished a corner kick, Foley scored again assisted by sophomore Libby Bulach.
The win over Monroe is the 5th win in a string of victories that the Varsity has put together to start their season. Waynesville kicked off their run with a 14-0 win over Carlisle and an 11-0 win over Preble Shawnee. Then, they travelled to Alter, where they won 2-1 on goals by Erbach and Woody (both assisted by Foley), and to Dixie, where they won 12-0.
Seniors Leah Butterbaugh, Jenna Foley, Hannah Gill, and Emma Sizer are the captains of the Varsity team, which also comprises seniors Grace Moore, Teagan Cassidy, and Reagan Hardyman, juniors Savanna Amburgy, Maddie Beuchat, Kate Handle, and Emma Whitaker, sophomores Gracyn Armstrong, Libby Bulach, Alyza Camp, Allie Freese, and Laine Kuhns, and freshmen Samantha Erbach, Emme Greely, Caroline Stupp, and Brooke Woody.
The JV team won big over Preble Shawnee but fell short against Alter and Monroe. Their record so far is 1-2. Playing JV are juniors Eryn Barrett, Lillian Crumback, and Lexi Youtsey, sophomores Gracyn Armstrong, Libby Bulach, Jenna Bulcher, Alyza Camp, Katie Dick, Havanna Hanauer, and Emmy Lezotte, and freshmen Sammie Boswell, Addison Hardyman, Jesse Hardyman, Kyla Harvey, Jillian Layne, Reagan Russell, Danie Scamorza, Kayann Whitt, and Lorin Winterbotham.
The Lady Spartans resume play Tuesday, Sep. 15, here at home against Milton Union. The JV kicks off at 5 pm and the Varsity starts at 7 pm.
