New Cell Phone Policy Takes Effect at WHS, WMS
Starting January 1, 2026, WMS and WHS implemented a new cell phone and personal device policy in accordance with Ohio’s new “Cell Phones in Schools: Model Policy” law, which Governor Mike DeWine signed on May 15, 2024. The purpose of the policy is to support focused learning, student well-being, and a safe school environment.
Why the change?
This update follows a new Ohio law that requires schools to limit student cell phone use during instructional time. Beyond compliance, however, research continues to show that constant access to phones can pull attention away from learning, increase anxiety, and make it harder for students to stay engaged with the people and work in front of them.
Under the new policy, students in grades 6–12 will keep cell phones, smart watches, and wireless earbuds turned off and stored during the school day. Devices may be kept in lockers or placed in classroom caddies, depending on the grade level. Wireless earbuds are not permitted at any time. Exceptions remain in place for students with IEPs, 504 Plans, or documented medical needs.
