Track and Field Replacement Project

COMMUNITY UPDATE ON FACILITY IMPROVEMENTS

Phase I - Track and Turf Replacement

The district’s track and turf have been serving students and the community at large since 2014.

Background

In 2014, the district sought bids to replace the grass football field with artificial turf and to resurface the surrounding track. The grass field was costly to maintain and often too wet for consistent use.

  • Sportscapes was awarded the bid and completed the installation.

Who Uses the Track and Turf

  • Athletics (practices and games)
  • Band
  • Gym classes
  • Youth sports teams
  • School gym classes, Elementary Fun Run and recess
  • Community members (track is open for public use)

What Has Happened Since Installation

The track and turf have experienced heavy, year-round use from both school programs and the community. Knowing that artificial turf has a limited lifespan of 8 to 10 years, the district asked school and community groups to contribute annual donations to help fund future replacement. Additionally, the district has set aside facility usage fees to help fund the turf replacement.

Why Replacement is Needed Now

The turf was expected to last 8 to 10 years and has exceeded its usable life; thanks to strong stewardship and consistent field maintenance, the district extended the fields' usable life to 12 years.

Eventually, the surface wears down; it becomes less consistent and can become less safe. Delaying replacement increases the risk of wear-related issues and potential injuries to student athletes.

Project Funding

The Board authorized the district to seek bids, and AstroTurf was awarded the contract in January 2026 for $804,038. The district has already secured more than half of the total cost through donations and facility rentals. The remaining amount will be paid from the Permanent Improvement Fund, which is designated specifically for facility maintenance and improvements and cannot be used for salaries or daily operating expenses.
